‘They want this': Boardman girls to defend state title

Yahoo05-03-2025
BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) — There isn't much this group of five seniors for Boardman bowling hasn't been a part of as they head to Columbus to defend their state title in the 2025 OHSAA Bowling State Tournament this weekend.
'They want this. They want to do this again for themselves and for the community,' Boardman head coach Justine Cullen said.
Throughout the last four years, Spartans girls bowling has a 51-4 record — including two undefeated seasons, four All-American Conference and Tournament titles, and plenty more.
'We're just going to get through it and hopefully we can repeat it again,' senior Kaitlyn Greenaway said.
'Just going back and maybe doing it one more time, that would be really great, best senior present ever,' senior Marissa Funk said.
Come postseason time, Boardman has three section championships, a district runner-up and district title. Last season, they were able to not only bring home the team title but also the individual state champion in Greenaway.
'It's just incredible, to have the opportunity to really defend your title truly because we only lost one senior,' Cullen said. 'So to be able to defend it with essentially the exact same team that you have, that just doesn't happen in sports very often, and for it to be with this group, this incredibly special, kind, hardworking squad, I mean, it's a gift.'
Along with Greenaway, who most recently claimed the district crown, fellow senior Marissa Funk has formed a dynamic one-two-punch to lead the Spartans.
'There is definitely the pressure of, oh, my gosh, we got to run it back, definitely, but we're all just here to have fun and do what we love together,' Funk said.
Funk joined Greenaway on the District Championship All-Tournament Team on the way to a fourth straight trip to state and a chance to repeat.
'We're all family, so we're all friends, we do it for each other,' Greenaway said. 'So it's definitely like a fun experience, we're ready for it. We know it's our last time, so we might as well make it worth it.'
Along Greenaway and Funk, the team consists of Gabby Vennetti (Senior), Lily Haase (Senior), Emily Leonard (Senior), Jasmine Kortes (Junior) and Kara McCutcheon (Freshman).

Tom Izzo, John Calipari seen sitting courtside together at Peach Jam

What do you think these pair of hall of famers were chatting about at Peach Jam this past weekend? If you ever want to run into a pair of hall of famers, you just need to go to recruiting events. It's the middle of the offseason and peak recruiting season so of course Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo is out and about pursuing potential future Spartans. This week, that included a stop at the annual monster recruiting event EYBL Nike Peach Jam in North August, S.C. Izzo was one of many notable coaches on hand for the recruiting event, and he was spotted sitting courtside next to a fellow hall of famer: John Calipari of Arkansas. Thank you to college basketball reporter and insider John Fanta for snapping a picture of the two chatting on the sidelines during Peach Jam. Check out the picture from Fanta below: What do you think these two are chatting about? It could be about the upcoming reported home-and-home Michigan State and Arkansas will be playing over the next two season. The Spartans are expected to host the Razorbacks at the Breslin Center this upcoming season, and then will travel to Fayetteville, Ark. during the 2026-27 season. Both Izzo and Calipari have been around the game of basketball for a long time, and have both experienced a ton of success on the hardwood. But it is still always cool to me to see them at events like this with boots on the ground recruiting as hard as they did when they first started 30-plus years ago. Updated 2025 TBT bracket after Carmen's Crew's opening game win

In case you missed it, the Ohio State basketball alumni team, "Carmen's Crew," won its opening game in The Basketball Tournament to start its defense of last year's championship run. They did it as the No. 1 seed in the Indianapolis Region and will next play the winner of "Locked In Elite" and "Fort Wayne Champs" Monday night at 6 p.m. ET. As we always do since the winner-take-all TBT Tournament came into existence, we'll follow along with "Carmen's Crew" to see if it can take home its third title or not. We already wrote a recap of the action and shared some highlights of its win over GoTime Green Machine, but we thought it well worth it to continue to share an updated 2025 TBT bracket as things progressed with Carmen's Crew still in the mix. So, with that being said, here is an updated 2025 TBT Tournament bracket after games on Sunday so you can follow along. We'll continue to update this bracket with every Carmen's Crew win and bring highlights and recaps as long as the former Ohio State players are in the tournament. McIlroy falls short in bid to crown British Open homecoming with the claret jug

PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland (AP) — Scottie Scheffler was walking down the first fairway at Royal Portrush when a shout came from outside the ropes: 'Go Rory!' They were all over the Dunluce Links again Sunday, those passionate supporters of Rory McIlroy cheering on their favorite son in the final act of his homecoming — whether they were watching him or not. The big disappointment for McIlroy was that he couldn't deliver what they craved. 'It's been an awesome week,' McIlroy said after shooting 2-under 69 to tie for seventh at the British Open. 'I've gotten everything I wanted out of this week apart from a claret jug, and that's just because one person was just a little bit better than the rest of us.' That might be an understatement. Scheffler, the world No. 1, won by four shots to capture his fourth major title. He was seven strokes clear of McIlroy and playing on a different level in this pretty corner of Northern Ireland. McIlroy even acknowledged as much. 'He's an incredible player,' he said of Scheffler. 'He's been dominant this week. Honestly, he's been dominant for the last couple years. He is the bar that we're all trying to get to.' As for Scheffler, he could only apologize for spoiling the McIlroy party. 'I know I wasn't the fan favorite today,' he said, grinning, in his post-round speech on No. 18, 'but I did hear a lot of USA and Dallas, Texas chants.' Scheffler might have won two majors this year and asserted himself as the game's dominant player. Yet, for many, 2025 still belongs to McIlroy after his dramatic win at the Masters in April to complete the career Grand Slam. Fans came in droves this week to celebrate McIlroy's achievements, and produced some of the loudest roars he has ever heard on a golf course. If McIlroy didn't quite deliver, then Royal Portrush — where he shot 61 as a 16-year-old for the course record — certainly did, gaining widespread rave reviews. When the Open returned to Portrush in 2019 for the first time in 68 years, McIlroy was so emotional he hit his opening drive out-of-bounds, shot 79 and missed the cut. He made amends six years later. 'I feel so thankful and just so lucky that I get to do this in front of this crowd,' McIlroy said. 'Hopefully I'll have one or two Opens left here, if the R&A decide to keep coming back — probably one while I'm still competitive and another one while I'm more gray than I already am.' McIlroy started Sunday six strokes back from Scheffler after a wild third-round 66, and needed a minor miracle to catch his big rival. He got up-and-down for birdie at the par-5 second hole but couldn't make a fast enough start. A bogey at No. 4, after missing the green with his approach, was a mistake he couldn't afford and he suddenly was eight shots adrift of Scheffler, who played as steady as ever. A double at No. 10 ended his hopes. McIlroy couldn't reproduce his Saturday charge but at least played all four days this time. 'I tried as best as I could to keep my emotions in check, especially walking up the last there and that reception,' McIlroy said. 'It's just been incredible to come back here and to play and at least feel like I had a chance today going out there. Just an awesome week.' ___ AP golf:
