UP survives Benilde scare to advance to FilOil Preseason semifinals
The Fighting Maroons survived a wild 7-0 closing run from the Blazers led by the tandem of Tony Ynot and Allen Liwag to advance to the semifinals.
Gerry Abadiano led the way for UP with 24 points, five rebounds, two assists, and one steal while big man Gani Stevens and veteran Harold Alarcon chipped in 12 and 11 markers each to help UP keep its three-peat bid alive.
Abadiano was shining all throughout the game, sending the Fighting Maroons to an 82-73 lead after a jumper late in the fourth quarter. But the Blazers, who ended up as second seed in the NCAA bracket, staged a fightback that threatened the title defense of UP.
Ynot instigated the rally with a huge three-pointer before Liwag sank a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to four, 82-78, with 1:13 left in the game.
The two connived in the succeeding play with Liwag securing the board after a missed basket from Abadiano and Ynot dishing the pass to him that would further trim the gap to just two at 82-80.
Benilde had two chances to either tie the game or win it, but transferee Raffy Celis missed a layup and muffed an open three-pointer as the Fighting Maroons cruised to the two-point victory that would set them up with a semifinals clash against either La Salle or Arellano University.

UP Diliman bike lanes closed for UPCAT 2026
The bike lanes along the Academic Oval of the University of the Philippines (UP) campus in Diliman, Quezon City have been closed for the ongoing UP College Admissions Test (UPCAT) 2026. In a traffic advisory on Friday, the UP Office of Admissions said the closure will be implemented on Saturday, August 2, and Sunday, August 3. The move will affect not just cyclists, but joggers as well. The UPCAT 2026 is already underway, with thousands of Filipino students seeking to secure admission in the country's premiere state university. The exam has been made available for students currently enrolled in Grade 11 for the academic year 2024 to 2025 and will be a first-year college student for the academic year 2026 to 2027. According to a report by Carlo Mateo on Super Radyo dzBB, vehicular traffic along portions of Commonwealth Avenue to UP Diliman was heavy on Saturday morning. The report said many test takers arrived early on campus to avoid being late for the UPCAT. Some of them came on board motorcycle taxis in a bid to beat the traffic grind. The UP Diliman Office of the Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs earlier released its UPCAT 2026 map, indicating vehicular flow to be observed. Meanwhile at UP Los Baños, a traffic advisory has also been issued for the conduct of UPCAT 2026 in the campus this weekend. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

UP fends off NU to capture first-ever Filoil Preseason three-peat
For the first time in the history of the Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup, a team seized three titles in a row. This, after powerhouse University of the Philippines dominated fellow UAAP team National University, 79-65, to reign supreme in the 2025 edition on Sunday, clinching a rare three-peat feat in the annual preseason showcase. The Fighting Maroons were comfortably holding a 22-point lead after big man Gani Stevens sank a pair of free throws that pushed UP's lead to 74-52 early in the fourth. But the Bulldogs staged a massive fightback after taking advantage of foul-plagued UP with Jake Figueroa, Steve Nash Enriquez, and Kinshin Padrones combined for seven straight freebies that trimmed their deficit to 13, 65-78, in the final 1:44. NU, though, missed their next shots as Harold Alarcon sealed the final shot with a split on the line as UP clinched what no team has ever done before. Francis Nnoruka led the charge with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds to go with two assists and one block while Gerry Abadiano and Stevens each poured 13 markers. Stevens also grabbed nine boards, four dimes, and a steal. Figueroa and Padrones paced NU with 12 and 10 points apiece as NU finished as runner-up after a gallant run in the tournament, which saw them make the championship round despite being the fourth-ranked team after the elimination round. Onic PH ousts Area77 to keep MSC title dream alive
Onic Philippines bounced back with a vengeance, thrashing North America's Area77 with a 2-0 victory in their do-or-die group stage clash at the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Mid-Season Cup 2025 late Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A day after falling prey to Aurora Gaming of Turkey, the Philippine bets regrouped and vented their ire to eliminate an all-Filipino Area77 and advance to the lower bracket semifinals of Group B. The win gave Onic Philippines another chance at advancing to the playoffs, but it will have to face Malaysia's HomeBois first in another must-win situation later tonight. "Para sa akin, hindi kami na-shock [sa talo namin sa Aurora] kasi alam naman naming nagpur-prepare din 'yung Aurora para sa amin," Onic's mid laner Frince "Super Frince" Ramirez said in the post-game press conference. Onic head coach Tony "Ynot" Senedrin added: "It's just the same, we just used our one life, I guess. So it was really up to us to look at the loss objectively, make sure that we do know the opportunities we have." Onic needed just 14 minutes and 12 seconds to secure Game 1 against Area77 with Super Frince making a surprise Kagura pick, delivering a spotless KDA of four kills and three assists. The game then snowballed in Game 2 when Onic's jungler Cyric "K1NGKONG" Perez delivered three early kills against his counterpart Lance "Shiro" Nones (Suyou), who sustained four deaths in the first four minutes. Area77 could not recover from that early collapse as the reigning world champions maintained map control the rest of the match with K1NGKONG dictating the tempo and the rest of Onic executing near-flawless plays. A lopsided 23-4 kill spread saw K1NGKONG unleash 14 kills and six assists against just one death as Onic lived to fight another day. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
