Wimbledon 2025: Medvedev, last year's semifinalist, exits in 1st round after meltdown against Bonzi
The Russian, who reached the semifinals at the All England Club last year, got all hot and bothered as Bonzi brought out what he described as his 'A-game' to dispatch the 2021 US Open champion on Court Two, which felt like an oven throughout the three-hour match.
Desperate to preserve his 100 per cent record of reaching at least the second round at Wimbledon, Medvedev took out his frustrations on his racket, smashing it to the ground after Bonzi had got the better of him yet again in the third set.

But there was no respite for the former world number one.
'I was surprised by his level... there was not much I could do,' Medvedev told reporters.
'Even when I played good shots today, he had an answer.'
While spectators took shade under umbrellas, large-brimmed hats, newspapers and any other makeshift item they could grab to block out the burning sun, the only respite the players got was a 10-minute break at the end of the third set with Wimbledon's heat rule coming into force.
That did little to revive Medvedev, however, as he immediately fell behind 2-0 to world number 64 Bonzi in the fourth set and it was a setback he could not recover from.
When the Russian netted a backhand, it brought up a first match point for Bonzi, and the Frenchman was celebrating his first win over a top-10 player at a Major seconds later after Medvedev smacked a forehand long.
'This is special for me today. This is my first top 10 win at a slam. I love this place,' a beaming Bonzi told the crowd with the temperature soaring above 32 degrees Celsius.
'Daniil is a great player. Sometimes its easier to play an opponent like him in the first round as the players are not used to playing on grass early in the tournament.
'I had nothing to lose and I played my A-game.'

Djokovic aims to step up history bid at Wimbledon
Novak Djokovic takes on British wildcard Dan Evans in the next stage of his quest for a record 25th Grand Slam as defending women's champion Barbora Krejcikova seeks to prolong her love affair with Wimbledon. Djokovic aims to step up history bid at Wimbledon After three days of stunning upsets at the All England Club, Djokovic, Krejcikova and world number one Jannik Sinner will bid to avoid becoming the latest stars to crash out in second-round action on Thursday. Eight top 10 seeds in the men's and women's singles were beaten in the first round, which ranks as the most at a Grand Slam in the Open era. Italy's Jasmine Paolini, last year's Wimbledon runner-up, was defeated in the second round on Wednesday to leave only one of the top five women's seeds world number one Aryna Sabalenka still standing. Djokovic goes into his match against Evans with a losing record against the British wildcard, although they have met only once before. Djokovic, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, was beaten by Evans on the clay of Monte Carlo in 2021. The Serb, beaten in the last two Wimbledon finals, struggled with stomach issues in his four-set win in the first round against Frenchman Alexandre Muller before recovering strongly, praising "miracle pills". Realistically, he is unlikely to lose sleep over the match-up with the 154th-ranked Briton, who, at 35, is three years younger than him, but he is wary of his opponent's experience on grass and the home support. "It's a good test for both of us," said Djokovic. "I think he's been picking his form up, as well. I think his rankings are not doing him justice at the moment. He deserves to be ranked higher. "He's one of the guys that you don't want to face on grass." Evans, for his part, knows he has to have the right mindset against the sixth seed. "He's done pretty much everything in the game," he said. "But it's also my chance to win the match. I have to be competitive." Krejcikova looked in deep trouble in her opening match before cutting out the errors and finding another gear to see off Alexandra Eala of the Philippines in three sets. The Czech 17th seed next takes on US player Caroline Dolehide, whom she has faced just once, beating her on clay in the United States in 2019. Krejcikova has had a miserable time with injuries this year and arrived at Wimbledon with just six matches under her belt in 2025. But the two-time Grand Slam champion is relishing being back on the hallowed turf of the All England Club, describing walking onto Centre Court for her first-round match as a "very beautiful and just very joyful experience". "It's just great to be back," she said. "It's just great to be playing in the temple of tennis. It's just a very, very special place." Jack Draper is the new figurehead of British tennis, taking on a role filled for a generation by the now-retired Andy Murray. The fourth seed, who meets former finalist Marin Cilic in the second round, appears comfortable with his new status. "I kind of play every match like my life depends on it anyway," said the 23-year-old. Sinner, who has never reached the Wimbledon final, takes on Australia's Aleksandar Vukic, while five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek faces America's Caty McNally. smg/iwd This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Rugby-Owen Farrell called up after Daly ruled out of Lions tour with broken arm
By Nick Mulvenney Rugby-Owen Farrell called up after Daly ruled out of Lions tour with broken arm SYDNEY, - British & Irish Lions back Elliot Daly has been ruled out of the rest of the tour of Australia by a broken forearm and will be replaced in the squad by playmaker Owen Farrell, the son of head coach Andy. Versatile 32-year-old Daly, who was on his third Lions tour, suffered the injury in Wednesday's 52-12 victory over the Queensland Reds having been brought into the starting side just before kickoff when fullback Hugo Keenan fell ill. Daly's ability to cover the centre, wing and fullback makes him especially valuable on tour and his late call-up in Brisbane was his 11th straight inclusion in a Lions matchday squad going back to the start of the 2021 tour of South Africa. Farrell, who won the last of his 112 England caps at the 2023 World Cup and announced in early 2024 that he was stepping away from international rugby, will join the squad for his fourth Lions tour, looking to add to his six test caps. "It is heartbreaking for the group that Elliot's tour is over. He is a Lions legend who has added so much to the group on and off the field over the past few weeks," Andy Farrell said in a team statement. "Owen will now come in and add to our options and bring his own Lions experience to the group." Farrell named a third captain in three matches for the clash against the New South Wales Waratahs on Saturday with Irish lock Tadhg Beirne following tour skipper Maro Itoje and fellow-Irishman Dan Sheehan in leading the side out. Keenan will start at fullback with another option for the number 15 shirt, Blair Kinghorn, named on the left wing having arrived in Australia late on Monday after helping his French club Toulouse to the Top 14 title. Young English loose forward Henry Pollock returns to the side and will play at blindside flanker in a back row also featuring number eight Ben Earl and openside Josh van der Flier. Fin Smith, who started at flyhalf in the loss to Argentina in Dublin two weeks ago, gets another shot at the playmaking role in a halfback partnership with his England teammate Alex Mitchell. Lions team: 15–Hugo Keenan, 14–Mack Hansen, 13–Huw Jones, 12–Sione Tuipulotu, 11–Blair Kinghorn, 10–Fin Smith, 9–Alex Mitchell, 8–Ben Earl, 7–Josh van der Flier, 6–Henry Pollock, 5–James Ryan, 4–Tadhg Beirne , 3–Finlay Bealham, 2–Luke Cowan-Dickie, 1–Pierre Schoeman. Replacements: 16–Dan Sheehan, 17–Ellis Genge, 18–Tadhg Furlong, 19–Joe McCarthy, 20–Scott Cummings, 21–Jac Morgan, 22–Ben White, 23–Marcus Smith.
