These dedicated groups will serve as a vital tool for the police to gather feedback directly from the citizens and disseminate important information and awareness messages on various issues.
SP Patil said that with over 2,200 villages in the rural district, a WhatsApp group is being established for each, as well as for urban wards. "Each group will be monitored by a police personnel who will not only get regular feedback, but also conduct in-person meetings with the residents.
This proactive approach will significantly contribute to maintaining law and order, as well as aid in crime prevention and detection," Patil said.
Each WhatsApp group will comprise 200 to 1,000 members, including villagers, the police patil and influential community figures such as teachers, lawyers, traders, and doctors. This direct engagement through WhatsApp is expected to bridge the gap between the public and the police.
Furthermore, these active members will effectively become the "eyes and ears" of the rural police, providing crucial local intelligence.
These groups will be useful for spreading information among people about different matters. "The process to form the groups has started and soon the entire rural district will be covered. The population of the rural district is approximately 50 lakh, covered by 40 police stations. A sizeable number of people in the rural district will thus be in contact with the police," Patil said.

Section 144 imposed in Pune's Yavat village after tension erupts over social media post

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said that Section 144 had been imposed for 48 hours following a tense situation in Yavat village at Daund Taluka of Pune District after a youth posted an alleged objectionable social media post. The Deputy CM, Ajit Pawar, arrived at the site to meet the affected people, said that the situation was now under control and appealed for calm. Speaking to the media persons, Ajit Pawar said, "After today's incident, Section 144 has been imposed in the area for 48 hours. The situation is under control, and there is no need to panic." He urged all citizens, regardless of caste or religion, to maintain peace and harmony and not fall for rumours. The deputy CM revealed that the tension began after someone posted a WhatsApp status referencing a recent incident in Madhya Pradesh. This status led to tension and minor vandalism in the area. "A few days ago, an incident occurred, followed by speeches from various representatives. Everything had calmed down afterwards. Recently, an incident took place in Madhya Pradesh. In connection with that, someone posted a WhatsApp status, which caused a bit of unrest," he added. He reassured citizens by stating that senior police officers and a team from the SRPF were already deployed in the area to ensure law and order. "I also want to clarify that the person who posted that status has no direct connection to this place. He had come here from Nanded several years ago. Due to that post, some tension arose, and there was some vandalism. But the police are doing their job and conducting investigations and panchanamas," Pawar added. "The police are working to maintain peace, and I appeal to the villagers to cooperate. The entire situation is under control. I urge everyone to trust the police and not believe in rumors. There is absolutely no atmosphere of fear. The situation is completely under control," he later said. Earlier, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis appealed to the public to maintain peace and cooperation after tensions flared up. A heavy deployment of Police personnel was made in the area. Police said that the incident occurred in the village a week ago, so the situation was already tense.

Mob violence in Pune's Yavat over 'objectionable' WhatsApp post; youth detained

An irate mob vandalised properties and indulged in arson in Yavat in Pune's Daund tehsil on Friday afternoon over an objectionable post allegedly uploaded on social media by a youth from a different community, police officials said. People gather after two groups clashed over a social media post, in Yavat in Pune's Daund tehsil, Friday.(PTI) A motorcycle was set ablaze and a bakery was damaged, the officials said, adding teargas shells had to be lobbed to bring the situation under control amid large mobs taking to the streets to vent their ire. There is heavy police presence in the village at the moment and peace and order has been restored, these officials said. The youth, who hails from outside the village, had kept an objectionable Whatsapp post, and he has been detained, Sandip Singh Gill, Superintendent of Police (Pune Rural), told PTI. "On being alerted, we detained the youth and the process of taking action was underway. However, by then the post went viral, leading to trouble in the village already tense due to some previous incidents. The mob vandalised structures belonging to members of the opposite community hailing from outside," Gill said. Another official said residents of the village, who are from both communities, are opposed to some persons who are "non-native" and hail from outside the region. This official said the village was tense recently after the desecration of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at a temple. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who was in Pune to attend an event, said a youth, who hails from outside, had put up an objectionable post about a Hindu priest raping someone, which angered residents. "To disperse the mob, police had to resort to lathi charge. The situation in Yavat is now under control and peace prevails. People from both communities are together and efforts are on to defuse tensions. Some persons keep such objectionable posts just to create tension. Strict action will be taken against them. No one has the right to post objectionable content," the CM said.
