Overspeeding cause of 90% road accidents in Tripura, says DGP

"On an average, one person dies every 3.5 minutes in road accidents in India. In Tripura, two people died every three days last year. This year, it has improved slightly, with two deaths occurring every four days," Anurag said.
"Thanks to a focused road safety drive, Tripura's performance is now better than the national average," he said.
The DGP said the police and traffic units are adopting the '4E' approach — Education, Engineering, Enforcement and Emergency Services — to enhance road safety.
Highlighting the progress, he said road traffic accident (RTA) deaths in Tripura were 13% lower in 2023 compared to the previous year. In the current year, up to June, RTA deaths have declined by 30%, and total accidents have dropped by 10%.
"Over-speeding is the main cause of road accidents. While it accounts for 71% of accidents nationwide, in Tripura, it contributes to 90% of the cases. Other contributing factors include driving under the influence, poor vehicle maintenance and violation of traffic rules," he said.
The DGP stressed the importance of public cooperation in adhering to traffic rules to reduce fatalities and injuries. He noted with concern that 66% of accident victims are youth between 18 and 45 years of age.
"Last year Tripura recorded 226 deaths from road accidents, while 116 people were murdered. Clearly, accidental deaths significantly outnumber those caused by crime," Anurag said.

Kruti currently resides alone in the same house where her father was killed. Her mother, Pallavi, is in judicial custody, having been arrested for the murder of the retired senior officer. Her brother, Karthikesh, no longer lives in the house. In the immediate aftermath of Om Prakash's death, police had to break open Kruti's room to take her into custody for questioning. While initial suspicions during the investigation included the possibility of Kruti's involvement, it was her mother who was ultimately named the prime accused. The retired officer was reportedly in the middle of a meal when he was fatally attacked, a detail that emerged during the course of the police investigation. Hyderabad: Telangana state Director General of Police, Dr Jitender, on Wednesday reviewed the prevailing law and order situation and issued suitable instructions based on his vast experience of over 32 years in policing. During a review meeting with Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) working across various sub-divisions in the state, the DGP emphasised the importance of regular inspections of police stations under their jurisdiction, stating that such inspections help in assessing how victims are being treated and and strengthening case investigation skills. During the meeting, Dr Jitender advised the young IPS officers to actively engage with their duties, noting that their actions today will define their effectiveness for the next three decades of their service. He stressed that IPS officers are constantly observed by the public and institutions, and their conduct must reflect the democratic value of public welfare. He advised ASPs to maintain the highest order of integrity, discipline, and zero tolerance for any act of insubordination. As local body elections are likely to be conducted soon in Telangana, he asked ASPs to initiate a village police officer system and begin regularly surprising and inspecting police stations in their jurisdiction. The DGP particularly stressed the importance of fair investigation supervision by ASPs in suspicious or unnatural death cases registered under 194 BNSS (174 CrPC). Highlighting the importance of technology, Dr Jitender said that improved communication systems would facilitate better monitoring of police stations. He called for strict action to curb the menace of drugs and ganja in the state, suggesting that by identifying and targeting key criminals, drug-related crimes could be effectively eradicated. He also advised the officers to take steps towards the appointment of village-level officers and the constitution of anti-ragging committees in view of the reopening of colleges.

Amritsar: Cross-border narcotics, illegal arms smuggling module busted, 3 held
The counter-intelligence (CI), Amritsar, team busted a cross-border narcotics and illegal arms smuggling module with links to Pakistan and arrested its three alleged operatives, a senior police officer said on Wednesday. (HT Photo) The police recovered eight sophisticated weapons, 1kg heroin and ₹ 2.9 lakh drug money from their possession, Punjab director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said here on Wednesday. Those arrested have been identified as Sarabjit Singh, a resident of Saanke village in Ferozepur, Kulwinder Singh, a resident of Langiana village in Ferozepur and Ashmandeep Singh, a resident of Railway Road in Tarn Taran. 'The recovered weapons, include three 9mm Glock pistols, three .30-bore Chinese pistols and two .30-bore PX-5 pistols. Police teams have also recovered a currency counting machine from their possession, besides, impounding their motorcycle (PB05-AT-1664) being used for transporting the consignments,' the DGP said. Yadav said preliminary investigations have revealed that the accused were acting under the directions of a Pakistan-based smuggler identified as Sikandar Noor, a resident of Manihala in Pakistan, who has been using drones to drop weapon consignments from across the border. The arrested accused were further distributing the arms to gangsters across Punjab with the intention to fuel criminal activities in the state, he said. Sharing operation details, the DGP said that CI-Amritsar received specific intelligence about the retrieval of weapons and narcotics consignments from near Indo-Pak border areas falling under the jurisdiction of districts Ferozepur and Tarn Taran. 'Acting swiftly, police teams intercepted and apprehended three persons from near Railway Road in Tarn Taran, when they were going to deliver the consignment on their motorcycle and recovered illegal weapons and narcotics from their possession,' he added. The DGP said further investigations are underway to establish backwards and forward linkages in this case and unearth the entire network. A case under sections 21, 25, 27-A and 29 of the NDPS Act, 25 of the Arms Act has been registered at the police station state special operation cell, Amritsar, the top cop added.
