RCB stampede: Siddaramaiah pulls up top cops for shoddy probe

Speaking at a review meeting held at the office of the director general of police in Bengaluru, the chief minister issued a series of stern directions to restore public confidence in law enforcement.
'Though the overall crime rate in the state is lower, the quality of police investigations has significantly declined. This must be improved immediately,' Siddaramaiah said, addressing senior police officials.
The chief minister expressed dismay over the delay in arresting an accused in the Bidar robbery case. 'The accused has been identified, but it has been five months and still no arrest. This is unacceptable,' he said.
Pointing to the recent stampede in wake of celebration of RCB's victory in IPL in Bengaluru that left 11 people dead, Siddaramaiah said, 'I have been an MLA since 1983 and also served as chief minister earlier. Never have I seen such a riot incident in Bengaluru. Why do we even have an intelligence department if it cannot provide timely and accurate information?'
He continued, 'The deaths occurred by 3.50 pm that day. Yet, even when I asked at 5.45 pm, I was told only one person had died, when in fact, 11 had already lost their lives. If senior officials had given me accurate information in time, I could have cancelled the stadium event. Isn't this a clear failure?'
Siddaramaiah also admitted he was upset about having to suspend senior officers. 'It pained me to suspend senior officials, but wasn't there a mistake? We can't shy away from action just because they're high-ranking,' he said.
Criticising the police further for systemic shortcomings, he noted: 'Charge sheets in criminal cases are often delayed, incomplete or ineffective. This is a major failure. Such lapses are intolerable.'
The chief minister questioned why only Mangaluru district has seen frequent communal unrest. 'Why is it that only Mangaluru is consistently volatile? Why are such crimes not happening elsewhere?' he asked.
He grilled the officers on why no suo motu action is being taken against those delivering hate speeches. 'Why is no suo motu action being taken against those who speak hatefully or disturb peace in the state? If you don't act, we will be forced to act against you,' he warned.
He instructed the department to identify and act against individuals disturbing communal harmony in Dakshina Kannada district. 'Whoever is behind the unrest—trace them to the root and take the strictest legal action,' he said.
The chief minister said it is the government's responsibility to ensure law and order. 'We are not here to sit idle blaming the system. Police stations should be citizen-friendly. At the same time, we must create an atmosphere where there is fear of the law among those with criminal intent,' he told the officers.
He also announced plans to fill vacant posts in the police department. 'Recruitment for vacant positions will begin in two months. I've already allocated substantial funds to address departmental needs. I expect you to maintain peace and uphold law and order. It is your duty to ensure justice for both the powerful and the powerless,' he added.
Reinforcing the importance of the rule of law in a democracy, he said, 'We have accepted democracy and the Constitution. We have pledged to uphold justice for all communities. So behave accordingly.'
'Police performance is crucial for maintaining peace in society. Listening to the problems of citizens and responding to their suffering is a core responsibility of the police in a democracy,' Siddaramaiah concluded.
The meeting was attended by home minister G Parameshwara, chief secretary Shalini Rajneesh, additional chief secretary Anjum Parvez, home department ACS Gaurav Gupta, and DGP Alok Mohan Salim, among others.

Gandhian ideals to find place in Dasara tableaux: CM
Bengaluru: As this year's Vijayadashami coincides with Gandhi Jayanti, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday directed officials that tableaux prepared for the Mysuru Dasara celebrations must reflect Mahatma Gandhi's ideals. He said Gandhi's philosophy should be suitably represented alongside the government's welfare schemes and achievements. 'This year Dasara falls on Gandhi Jayanti -- on October 2. So, I have instructed officials that Dasara should be celebrated in a manner that makes Gandhi Jayanti meaningful. Especially the tableaux should reflect Gandhi's ideals,' the CM told reporters. Siddaramaiah briefed reporters after presiding over a high-level committee meeting at Vidhana Soudha on the preparations for Dasara-2025. The CM said the historical and cultural significance of the festival should not be overshadowed by sheer extravagance. He emphasised that unnecessary spending does not amount to grandeur and that public safety and convenience must be the top priority. 'This year, Dasara will begin on September 22 and culminate with the Jamboo Savari on October 2, making it an 11-day event, instead of the usual 10,' the CM said. He emphasised that the programmes should be designed to uphold the rich cultural, religious, and historical traditions of the Mysuru Dasara, which is globally renowned. He stated that while Rs 40 crore was allocated last year, adequate funds will be provided this year as well to organise a grand celebration. He asked departments to plan meaningful exhibitions and displays to showcase government initiatives and guarantee schemes in a way that connects with the public. ' He also called for people-centric policies to be effectively communicated during the festivities. With more than 10 lakh people expected to attend, including foreign tourists, the CM directed officials to give the utmost attention to crowd management and safety measures. He said police personnel must be people-friendly and law and order should be maintained without any lapses. The number of seats in front of the Mysore Palace will be reduced this time to manage crowding during the Jamboo Savari. Officials were asked to ensure that there is no overcrowding at any of the programme venues.

She submitted chat messages, screenshots, video call records, and photos as proof of the relationship and the alleged abuse. 'For the past 5 years, the complainant had been in a relationship with a cricketer. The man emotionally, mentally, and physically exploited her by misleading her with the promise of marriage. He introduced the complainant to his family and behaved like a husband, which made her trust him completely. When the complainant realized the deception and protested, she was subjected to physical violence and mental harassment. During the relationship, the complainant was also exploited financially and emotionally.' 'Later, it was found that the man was involved in similar false relationships with other girls too. On June 14, 2025, the complainant called the women's helpline 181, but the process did not move forward at the police station. The complainant is mentally and socially distressed and is seeking justice through the Chief Minister's office. She has chat records, screenshots, video calls, and photos as evidence.' 'It has been requested that a swift investigation be conducted into the matter and that legal action be taken against the concerned individual. Duplicate keys, CCTV tampering: How a bank manager orchestrated Rs 53 crore heist in Karnataka
The Karnataka Police Friday announced that they have successfully solved one of the biggest bank heists in the country, where Rs 53 crore worth of jewellery was stolen. The police have arrested three men, including a manager who had been transferred from the bank's branch. The accused have been identified as Vijayakumar Miriyala, 41, and his associates Chandrashekar Nerella, 38, an employee at a private company, and Sunil Narasimhalu Moka, 40. On May 25, a theft was reported at the Canara Bank in Managuli town, Vijayapura district, where 58.97 kg of gold ornaments were stolen. Lakshman Nimbargi, Superintendent of Police, addressing the media in Vijayapura district, said the accused attempted to mislead investigators. 'The case has been cracked despite creating several scenarios that diverted the investigation,' he said. Miriyala, who worked as a manager in the Managuli town branch of Canara Bank, was transferred to the Ronihal branch in the Vijayapura district on May 9. The plan was to steal the bank only after his transfer, said the police. The police recovered two vehicles used in the crime and 10.5 kg of gold ornaments worth an estimated Rs 10.75 crore. Investigators also seized gold bars that were created after the stolen ornaments were melted, a strategy employed by the thieves to facilitate easier transportation and disposal of the stolen goods. The police suspect that more people were involved in the crime, and the investigation will continue to recover additional gold. According to a police officer, when the investigation began, it was suspected to be an insider job. 'We found that Miriyala had provided bank keys to his co-conspirators in March-April before his transfer from the branch. The group then created duplicate keys and tested their functionality in preparation for the heist. The timing of the robbery was carefully calculated. Miriyala waited until after his transfer to execute the plan, ensuring he would not be immediately suspected,' the officer said. The group, according to the police, initially planned to strike on May 23, coinciding with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru-Sunrisers Hyderabad Indian Premier League (IPL) match, hoping that celebrations from fans would provide cover for their activities. However, when RCB lost the match, they postponed the operation by one day, said the police officer. The accused allegedly spent months studying and analysing the bank's location and CCTV coverage. They also allegedly went through bank robberies that had taken place in other states. After the heist, to divert the police's attention, they placed saffron, turmeric, and blowtorches inside the bank, hoping police would assume the perpetrators were from Tamil Nadu or Kerala, where such items are sometimes associated with robbery cases involving witchcraft, said the police. Inspired by movies, the accused, after the heist, allegedly transported their two-wheelers using a truck, ensuring their vehicles would not be traced to the crime scene. They also allegedly manipulated the bank's security systems, diverting CCTV cameras and cutting cables to the high-mast lighting, and took away the network video recorder (NVR) from the bank. 'Eight teams were formed to nab the accused. One of the main leads we got was the movement of a car a few hours before and after the heist. It was found that the car was registered in the name of Miriyala, and upon his interrogation, he confessed to the crime,' said the officer.
