Khelo India Youth Games 2025: Shourya Ambure's winning return to Patna comes with greater maturity and Asian medal
At the end of what has been a long season for Shourya Ambure, she scored a facile victory in the final on the opening day of athletics competitions in KIYG 2025 in Bihar. She loved returning to the Patliputra Sports Complex where she had first drawn national attention by winning the crown in the National Youth Championships in March.
'At that time, my Board exams were on, and I skipped two papers to take part in the Nationals because it was a qualification event for the Asian Championship. I hadn't done much training back then, but I believed I could do better,' she recalled of her last visit to Patna when she won gold in a time of 14.55 seconds.
Between the two signposts that she marked in Patna in the span of two months, 15-year-old Shourya made the nation proud at the Asian Youth Championship in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, where she clocked a personal best time of 13.80 seconds and won a bronze medal. She did not push herself in search of another personal best on Monday.
Making her KIYG debut, she recorded a time of 14.33 seconds in the heats. Having felt a tightening of the hamstring and got a massage before the final, she secured gold in in 14.11 seconds, well clear of Sonali Das (West Bengal) and Vishnu Shree NS (Kerala).
'I wanted to do better but I'm happy with my performance. I clocked a decent time tonight. I'm only 15 and have a lot of time in the U18 to break the National Youth Record,' she said referring to the 13.70-second mark set by Tamil Nadu's PM Thabitha back in 2019. 'My coach, who has been guiding me for 10 years, told me to just run and enjoy the race.'
Shourya Ambure is the product of a long-term vision that coach Ajit Kulkarni and her parents Rupali and Avinash Ambure, IPS officers holding high ranks in Maharashtra Police, have shared.
'I started competing in the 80m hurdles in U14 category and continued the same until under-16. I was used to running 80-meter hurdle races. This was only my fourth race in the 100m Hurdles. Now, my goal is to win medals at the Youth Commonwealth Games and Youth Asian Games,' Shourya Ambure said.

International Federation statutes and recognition govern them, and if an NSF has adequate funding, it can ignore any recognition issue. However, much debate centred on the BCCI's fate. The Bill has provisions that could allow BCCI to wriggle through, although technically it should follow the law of the land (and come under NSB). An argument in BCCI's favour is that it's a well-run, money-making organisation which, unlike other NSFs, doesn't depend on government funds. However, the sticky point is the BCCI's reluctance to be brought under the Right to Information Act. It is to be seen how the ministry handles the matter, given the cricket body's influence and reach. For now, the hope is that the sports bill ushers in positive change, discouraging government overreach, as India bids for the 2036 Olympic Games.

Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede: Karnataka govt revokes suspension of former Bengaluru top cop, 3 other officers
The Karnataka government Monday revoked suspensions of former Bengaluru police commissioner B Dayananda and three other officers who were suspended following the M Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede that claimed 11 lives on June 4. However, IPS officer Vikash Kumar Vikash remains suspended. Among the suspended officers, Vikash had approached the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) seeking relief from his suspension. The CAT granted Vikash's petition and revoked his suspension. The state government subsequently challenged the CAT order, which is currently being heard by the Karnataka High Court. Besides Dayananda, the government reinstated former deputy commissioner of police (Central) Shekhar H Tekkannavar, C Balakrishna (former assistant commissioner of police, Cubbon Park sub-division), and A K Girish (former police inspector, Cubbon Park police station). The suspensions were imposed immediately after the stampede at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, where celebrations were held on June 4, following Royal Challengers Bengaluru's maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title victory a day earlier. The government's suspension order cited 'substantial dereliction of duty' that caused 'misery, loss of precious life and embarrassment for the government.' The government had blamed the police for failing to implement adequate safety measures during the celebrations and for providing insufficient public information regarding necessary precautionary steps. In Monday's order, the government noted that following the stampede, it had ordered a magisterial inquiry and set up a one-man judicial commission under retired High Court judge Justice John Michael D'Cunha. 'Since both the Judicial Commission and Magisterial Committee have completed their enquiry into the stampede incident and submitted their reports to the Government on 10.07.2025 and 11.07.2025, respectively. Further, the officers have also submitted representations read at ref (5) requesting to revoke their suspension. In view of the above, the order of suspension of the above-said officers has been reconsidered by the Government,' the government order reads.

With Byron Buxton in question, Twins shoot for series win vs. Nats
The most important moment for the Minnesota Twins on Sunday might happen well before the first pitch. That's because All-Star outfielder Byron Buxton is scheduled to undergo testing on his injured left side before the Twins take on the Washington Nationals in Minneapolis. The 31-year-old Buxton left Saturday's game because of left-side soreness. Washington added insult to injury when it cruised to a 9-3 win over the Twins to even the three-game series. Buxton might not be in the Twins' lineup for the rubber match. Either way, Minnesota is eager for a series win after dropping its first two series after the All-Star break. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said the series finale offers a chance for a fresh start. "Not the game we intended to play," Baldelli said. "(Friday's) game was a brilliant game, and then we came in (Saturday) and played like this. I'd like to win the series (on Sunday) and get back to playing complete baseball." The lineup might be incomplete. Buxton went 0-for-3 on Saturday and left the game after he experienced pain. The team hopes the injury isn't serious, but history offers some cause for consternation because Buxton has dealt with a spate of injuries throughout his career.
