Phillies Blast MLB For Naming Jacob Misiorowski To NL All-Star Team

Forbes13-07-2025
A bunch of Phillies have blasted the selection process of the National League All-Star roster after Brewers rookie pitcher Jacob Misiorowski — who has only pitched in five MLB games — has been named to the team.
After it was announced Friday that Misiorowski will replace Cubs pitcher Matthew Boyd for the NL, some Phils believe two of their teammates, Ranger Suarez and Christopher Sanchez, were snubbed in favor of the young, "marketable' flamethrower.
"That's just how MLB does it now," catcher J.T. Realmuto said via The Athletic. "Nothing against the Misiorowski kid. But [Suarez and Sanchez] are deserving of being on the team in the first place. There's no doubt."

Shortstop Trea Turner was blunt, saying, "What a joke. That's f---ing terrible. I mean that's terrible, dude."
And outfielder Nick Castellanos chimed in, "It's turning into the Savannah Bananas."
Since making his debut on June 12, Misiorowski has caused a buzz with a fastball that averages 99.3 mph, going 4-1 with a 2.83 ERA in his five starts and striking out 33 over 25 2/3 innings. The 6-foot-7 right-hander has fired 89 pitches this season of 100 mph or more. Here's a look at 'The Miz' in action:
"Major League Baseball is really just focusing on the most marketable players," Castellanos said. "So the fact that they can have somebody in the game that is going to basically blow out one inning and throw 103, 104, they're going to get more eyeballs on baseball. They're going to think it's getting more popular."
Turner said it '100 percent' cheapens the All-Star Game to add a player like Misiorowski who has so little experience. 'I mean, it's not the All-Star Game in the sense that the best players go there, or people who have had the best season," Turner said. "It's whoever sells the most tickets or has been put on social media the most. That's essentially what it's turned into."
Both Suarez and Sanchez have had All-Star-caliber seasons. Suarez, who is 7-3 with a 1.94 ERA over 83⅔ innings, owns the lowest ERA in the league for any pitcher with at least 80 innings thrown.
Suarez said he declined in invite to the All-Star game, saying he prefers resting during the break, and so MLB did not name him an All-Star.
The lone Phillies All-Star, Kyle Schwarber, said of Suarez, "Even if you're going to ask him that, then he should be labeled an All-Star at that point. Not just if you can pitch."
Sanchez's 2.59 ERA is the league's fourth-lowest among qualified starters, and he has a 4.1 WAR, the third-best among NL pitchers.
"If [Sanchez] is not an All-Star, then no one is," Turner said.
Sanchez would likely not be available for Tuesday's All-Star Game in Atlanta after starting for the Phils on Sunday in San Diego against the Padres. But his Phillie teammates all says that the MLB should have named him to the roster and then selected another replacement. "He should be named an All-Star still," Schwarber said.
Turner said it's 'unacceptable' that Sanchez hasn't been named an All-Star while adding, 'So the only excuse that that guy's not in the All-Star Game is that he can't pitch that day? That's terrible.'

Messi exits with injury in 11th minute of Leagues Cup match

Lionel Messi suffered an injury and was removed in the 11th minute of Saturday's Leagues Cup match against Necaxa at Fort Lauderdale's Chase Stadium. The 38-year-old Argentine superstar forward appeared to be having treatment on his upper right leg or groin before making his exit under his own power and walking to the locker room. Messi took the ball and dribbled into the Necaxa back line, but he stumbled at the top of the box and ran into Necaxa defender Alexis Pena then tumbled to the ground, pounding the pitch in frustration as the ball was cleared away. Moments later, Herons captain Messi was alone near midfield on the left wing by himself when he went to the ground in a seated position, lying on his back briefly until trainers arrived. Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano elected to send in Federico Redondo to replace Messi. During Argentine World Cup qualifiers in March, Messi was nagged by thigh strain issues. Messi has scored 18 goals and assisted on nine others in 18 MLS appearances this season. He assisted on both Inter Miami goals in a 2-1 victory over Atlas on Wednesday in their opener in the Leagues Cup, a tournament involving MLS and Mexican League squads. Miami conclude group stage play in the event on Wednesday against Pumas. Messi led Inter Miami to the inaugural Leagues Cup crown in 2023 just after his arrival with the MLS club. js/bb

Christopher Bell takes accountability for incident with Zane Smith at Indy

NEWTON, Iowa — Christopher Bell steeled himself as he headed toward Zane Smith's crew after last weekend's race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Bell went to apologize for wrecking Smith in overtime — the third consecutive weekend Smith has lost several positions in the final laps. How to watch Sunday's Cup race at Iowa Speedway: Start time, TV info and weather Ryan Blaney looks to repeat his win in last year's inaugural Cup race at Iowa. Nate Ryan, 'I thought I could sweep underneath of him and clearly you wanted to be on the inside at Indy,' Bell said of his move on Smith. 'I tried to sweep underneath him, and I tried to make it as last minute as possible so that he couldn't counter my move, and I misjudged my run, ran into the back of him and turned him to the right.' Bell would reach out to Smith but also wanted to speak to Smith's crew at Front Row Motorsports. So what was it like to approach people larger than him and angry at him? 'I'm not going to lie,' Bell said Saturday at Iowa Speedway in response to a question from NBC Sports. 'I was nervous, but I knew I deserved what was coming, so I'm like I'm going to own it. If I want to walk up there (into the team's hauler) and they want to (yell at me with expletives) and tell me to get out, I deserved that in that moment. 'I felt like I owed them the respect. … I tried to show them accountability and tell them it was on me.' Apologies don't bring back results. Smith has lost about 50 combined positions in the final laps of the last three races. 'The past two weeks, nothing has been in our control,' Smith said of the issues in those late laps. 'Last week was for sure going to be a top-10, top-five day. Unfortunately, it was taken from us. Same thing at Dover.' The woes started at Sonoma. 'Sonoma was on me,' Smith said. The team opted to stay out on older tires late and restarted eighth with 13 laps to go. A pair of cautions allowed those behind with fresher tires to close on Smith. Iowa starting lineup: Chase Briscoe scores 6th NASCAR Cup pole of the season Chase Briscoe has won more poles this season than any other Cup driver. Dustin Long, 'When that happens and you get closer to the end, you're just so vulnerable,' Smith told NBC Sports. Those with fresher tires pounced. Smith dropped from seventh to 27th in the final four laps. At Dover, Smith was running 14th before an incident in overtime. Ryan Preece had contact and came down on Smith's car, turning it. Smith finished 22nd. 'I could hear (Preece) trying to gather it up,' Smith said. 'He just had a huge moment … nothing I could do there.' Then at Indy, Smith was running 13th when the contact from Bell wrecked him and Smith finished 31st. That's 46 positions lost in the final laps of the last three races for Smith. Good news, bad news for NASCAR Cup drivers ahead of weekend at Iowa Speedway Ryan Blaney won last year's inaugural Cup race at Iowa. Dustin Long, Despite the misfortune, Smith said the focus is on the positives in those races. 'My whole team, they aren't stupid, they see that we're running good and have speed when this happens,' he said. 'Now, if we were running 30th and get hooked, the guys are going to be pretty upset and just over it. It's far from that situation. My team has done an incredible job of grinding away.' Smith qualified 14th for Sunday's Cup race at Iowa (coverage begins at 3 p.m. ET on USA). 'I feel like what we've unloaded some of these weekends, we just have a really good car,' Smith said. Now, it's just a matter of getting the finish that is deserved.
