PM Modi unable to reject Trump's claims as US president will ‘lay bare the truth': Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi cannot outrightly state that United States President Donald Trump has been lying about brokering a ceasefire deal between India and Pakistan, as that would prompt the American leader to 'lay bare the truth', reported ANI.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, the leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha said: 'The prime minister has not said that Trump is lying. It is obvious what has happened. Everyone knows, he is not able to say it. That is the reality.'
Trump has repeatedly claimed that he helped India and Pakistan settle the border tensions in May. The US president has also claimed that he pressured both countries into accepting the ceasefire by threatening to stop trade with them.
New Delhi has rejected Trump's assertions.
Gandhi said on Wednesday that Trump was repeating his claims to pressure New Delhi on a trade deal that is in the works.
'Just watch how the trade deal turns out,' he added.
On Tuesday, speaking during a debate on the Pahalgam terror attack and the subsequent Operation Sindoor, Gandhi asked the prime minister to ' show courage ' and clarify if Trump was lying about mediating the ceasefire deal.
'Donald Trump has said 29 times that he brought about the ceasefire,' Gandhi said. 'If he is lying… let the prime minister say he is lying. If he has the courage of Indira Gandhi, let him say here that Donald Trump is a liar.'
Modi told the Lok Sabha later that no country told India to halt its military operation against terror bases in Pakistan.
A day earlier, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told Parliament that there was no call between Modi and Trump during the Indian military strikes – codenamed Operation Sindoor – on what it claimed were terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

The strikes were in response to the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which killed 26 persons on April 22.
The Pakistan Army retaliated to Indian strikes by repeatedly shelling Indian villages along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. At least 22 Indian civilians and eight defence personnel were killed.
India and Pakistan on May 10 reached an 'understanding' to halt firing following the four-day conflict.
On Tuesday, Trump said that the trade deal with India had not been finalised and New Delhi could be hit with a tariff rate of 20% to 25%.
Trump added that the final rate of levy had also not been finalised as India and the US were negotiating the agreement ahead of the August 1 deadline.
The US president made the comments while responding to reporters' questions about the so-called reciprocal tariffs Washington plans to reimpose on dozens of countries that have not negotiated separate trade agreements with the US by August 1.
Trump announced higher levies in April, before pausing those tariffs at a reduced 10% rate to allow time for negotiations. Despite an extended deadline, he has only secured a handful of deals.

Janaza-Ghaib: Symbolic funeral of Pahalgam attacker in POK confirms Pakistan's role in attack, says report

The funeral in absentia of Tahir Habib, an ex-Pak Army soldier and Lashkar terrorist killed in Op Mahadev, was held in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, offering fresh proof of Islamabad's role in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians. read more Indian security officers inspect the site in Pahalgam where militants indiscriminately opened fired at tourists at Pahalgam. AP File The funeral in absentia (Janaza-Ghaib) of Tahir Habib, a former Pakistan Army soldier and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative killed during Operation Mahadev in Jammu & Kashmir, was recently held in his native village of Khai Gala in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK), The Times of India reported. The event further reinforces evidence of Islamabad's involvement in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which left 26 civilians dead. Visuals shared on Telegram show elderly residents of Khai Gala offering prayers for Tahir, who was one of the key operatives behind the Pahalgam massacre. The funeral adds to mounting proof that the attack was executed by terrorists from across the border, with clear interstate and cross-border links. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The gathering turned tense when local LeT commander Rizwan Hanif attempted to join the funeral, despite explicit objections from Tahir's family. A heated confrontation followed, highlighting growing friction even within militant circles. Tahir, classified as a Category 'A' terrorist, had long been on the radar of Indian security agencies for his involvement in cross-border militancy. His killing, along with two others in Srinagar last week, marked a major breakthrough for Indian forces. According to a local source, Lashkar operatives even threatened mourners at gunpoint, triggering outrage in the village. 'People here have long been uneasy about radicalisation. After this incident, Khai Gala residents are planning a public boycott against terror recruitment,' the source said. This incident not only reaffirms Pakistan's direct hand in the Pahalgam attack, but also reflects a growing resistance in POK against Pakistan's terror machinery. It also signals the far-reaching impact of Operation Sindoor, India's counter-offensive launched in response to the April 22 strike. On April 22, Pakistan-backed and trained terrorists opened fire on tourists in Pahalgam, a popular destination in Jammu and Kashmir, killing 26 civilians in one of the deadliest attacks in the Valley in recent years. Pakistan has long been accused of using terror as an instrument of state policy. Groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, backed by Islamabad, have repeatedly targeted civilians in Kashmir and beyond. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Modi's Swadeshi push amid global uncertainty

Varanasi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi onSaturday called on citizens to adopt the spirit of "Swadeshi" and support locally-made products, stressing that true service to the nation lies in promoting indigenous goods, especially amid "global economic uncertainties". Addressing a public meeting in his parliamentary constituency Varanasi, Modi said, "As we talk about economic progress, I want to draw your attention to the current global scenario. "The world economy is facing instability and uncertainty. In such times, countries are focusing solely on their own interests. India, too, is on the path to becoming the world's third-largest economy and must remain alert to its own economic priorities." The Prime Minister's renewed push for 'Swadeshi' (indigenous) comes amid the US announcing tariffs on exports from about 70 nations, including India. According to the White House order, India now faces tariffs of 25 per cent for its exports to the US. Emphasising that farmers, small industries and employment for youths are the top-most priorities for the government, Modi said, "The government is doing everything possible in this direction. But as citizens, we too have responsibilities." Calling for a national movement to support local products, the Prime Minister said, "This is not just about Modi saying it, every Indian should say this -- if we want India to become the third-largest economy, every political party and every leader, keeping aside their hesitations, must work in the nation's interest and awaken the spirit of Swadeshi among the people." He also urged people to be conscious consumers, saying, "Whatever we buy, we should ask ourselves -- has an Indian toiled to make this? If it has been made by the sweat of our people, with their skills, that product is Swadeshi for us. We must adopt the mantra of 'Vocal for Local'." Making a special appeal to traders and shopkeepers, the Prime Minister said, "At a time when the world is going through uncertainty, let us take a pledge to sell only Swadeshi goods from our shops and markets. Promoting made in India goods will be the truest service to the country." With the festival and wedding seasons approaching, the prime minister encouraged people to ensure that all new purchases are made in India. He recalled how many citizens who were planning to hold wedding events abroad shifted them to India after his earlier appeal. "The feeling of Swadeshi in every action will define our future. This will also be a true tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. Only through collective effort can we fulfil the dream of a developed India," Modi said. The prime minister was addressing a massive public gathering on Saturday in Banauli village, Sevapuri, Varanasi. During his one-day visit to the city, he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 52 projects worth around Rs 2,200 crore. He also transferred Rs 20,500 crore directly into the bank accounts of over 9.70 crore farmers under the 20th installment of the PM-KISAN Samman Nidhi scheme. A short film showcasing the success and impact of the scheme on farmers was also screened during the event. The PM highlighted the government's farmer-centric policies in detail. He said the government is constantly working for the well-being of farmers. Under previous governments, promises made in the name of farmers were rarely fulfilled, but the BJP government delivers what it promises, he said. He cited the PM-KISAN Samman Nidhi as proof of the government's firm commitment and recalled how opposition parties like the Samajwadi Party and Congress had spread rumours in 2019, claiming the scheme would stop after elections or the money would be taken back. "Has a single installment stopped over the years? The PM-KISAN scheme is running without any break," he said. Presenting data, he shared that nearly Rs 3.75 lakh crore has been transferred directly to farmers' accounts so far. In Uttar Pradesh alone, 2.5 crore farmers have received over Rs 90,000 crore, while farmers from Kashi have got Rs 900 crore. Modi emphasised the transparency of the scheme, saying there are no cuts, commissions or middlemen. "We have created a permanent system where there's no leakage and no one can steal the rights of the poor," he added. Referring to his development mantra, "the more backward someone is, the higher the priority", the PM spoke about the newly approved PM Dhan Dhanya Agriculture Scheme, which will focus on underdeveloped districts with lower crop production and income.

Hyderabad has wherewithal to host 2036 Olympics: CM

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday affirmed his overwhelming commitment to promote sports and assured appropriate budget allocations to help Telangana emerge as a vibrant hub for all aspiring sportspersons. Following India's bid to host the 2036 Olympics, he pointed out that Hyderabad not only has the wherewithal to host the mother of all sporting events, but it would also be extended all-round support to help secure the maximum medals for India. The Chief Minister, who unveiled a new state sports policy during the sports conclave at HICC, emphasised that the decision to come up with the new policy was arrived at after in-depth deliberations. Moreover, there was no sports policy until now, a lacuna that the Congress government wanted to rectify and provide platforms to all budding athletes. 'The youth is going astray in the absence of a sports policy. In recent times, drug and marijuana cases have increased significantly in Telangana. We have formed Eagle Force to control drugs and marijuana. There is a danger that many youngsters may turn into addicts. We are bringing a sports policy so that sportspersons from Telangana can compete with the world and win laurels for the country. To reduce political interference in sports, there will be a sports policy in public and private partnership, involving experts from diverse fields as stakeholders. The state government plays a limited role in this matter,' he explained. Accusing the BRS regime of converting sports grounds into function halls, Revanth Reddy recalled how the national football team that finished fourth in the 1956 Olympics at Melbourne boasted of nine players from Hyderabad. 'Many players like Mohd Azharuddin, VVS Laxman, Ravikanth Reddy, Siraj, Nikat Zareen and Deepti represent Telangana. We have sent a clear message that the state government recognises not only academics but also excellence in sports. Owing to the negligence of the previous government, sports grounds have become function halls. They have become venues for events and sunburn parties,' he said.
