South African national among two arrested; 25 gram cocaine seized in Vizag
The police estimate that the market value of the seized contraband would be around ₹15 lakh.
The accused have been identified as Ch. Akshay alias Munna (34), a resident of APSEB Colony in Seethammadhara, and Thomas Djimon (30), hailing from Pretoria in South African, currently residing in Delhi.
Police Commissioner Shankabratha Bagchi told the media that acting on a tip-off about cocaine being supplied from Delhi to Visakhapatnam, the III Town Police and the EAGLE team carried out a joint operation and arrested the suspects near a vacant plot in Andhra University's North Campus.
'We had prior information that the South African national was carrying the contraband. We followed him and waited for the receiver of the cocaine,' Mr. Bagchi said
Preliminary investigation revealed that the cocaine was procured from Delhi. However, it is yet to be ascertained that whether the cocaine was sourced from South Africa or elsewhere else, he said.
Akshay, who works as an insurance agent, reportedly confessed that he, along with his friends, intended to consume the contraband, and they had agreed to pay ₹3.60 lakh for the cocaine.
According to police, the kingpins of the racket are Prince alias Omenefe and Butchi, both based in Delhi.
Akshay allegedly contacted Prince and placed the order, and the latter engaged Thomas to deliver the contraband in Visakhapatnam.
Investigation also revealed that Akshay had shared the delivery location with Thomas via WhatsApp, and picked him up near the AU Arch at Maddilapalem. He drove Thomas to an isolated spot where the contraband was handed over inside a diary.
'We are yet to ascertain whether this was the first such delivery to the city and how many people are involved in the racket. Investigation is on,' said the Police Commissioner.
A special team of the city police will travel to Delhi to trace the links of the supply chain, he added.

D uring the hearing, Teja's counsel argued that no contraband was recovered from his possession and that his implication was based solely on Surya's confession, allegedly due to their familial relationship. However, the court, after hearing both sides, refused to grant bail. In contrast, the court granted conditional bail to two other accused—Surabhi Jaswanth and D Pavan Kumar—citing a previous high court order under which co-accused Yashwanth Ramana and Navadeep Reddy were released on bail. Chief Secretary stresses on coordinated efforts to make Andhra Pradesh drug-free
Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand has stressed the importance of coordinated efforts by various State and Central agencies to make Andhra Pradesh a drug- and ganja-free State. Speaking at the second quarterly Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) meeting held on Tuesday, Mr. Vijayanand said the Elite Anti-Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement (EAGLE), formed by the government, was actively working to curb ganja cultivation in tribal areas of North Andhra Pradesh. He said EAGLE officers were creating awareness among tribal communities and encouraging them to shift to alternative crops such as coffee and silver oak, while also providing them with the necessary training and support. Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta, who joined the meeting virtually, highlighted the need to strengthen inter-State check posts to curb drug and ganja smuggling. Inspector General of Police and EAGLE head Ake Ravi Krishna gave an overview of several operations including Operation Garuda, Operation Safe Campus Zone, Garuda 2.0, and Operation Chaitanya. These initiatives aim to curb the sale of unprescribed drugs in medical shops, check smuggling through trains, and eliminate ganja cultivation in Alluri Sitharama Raju district. Biggest ganja haul of 2025: EAGLE nabs three in interstate smuggling bust
HYDERABAD: In the state's largest ganja seizure this year, the Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement (EAGLE) seized 935 kg of ganja worth Rs 5 crore and arrested three persons in an inter-state operation. The accused — Pawar Kumar Badu, Samadhan Kantilal Bhise and Vinayak Baba Saheb Pawar — had travelled from Maharashtra to Rajamahendravaram in a rented Toyota Innova on July 23. There, they met a supplier who loaded the ganja into a Tata Eicher truck. The Innova then escorted the truck to Maharashtra in a bid to evade checks. Concealed in fruit trays Acting on a tip-off, EAGLE teams from the Khammam Regional Narcotic Control Centre and Rachakonda Narcotic Police intercepted the convoy at Batasingaram Fruit Market Junction on the Vijayawada-Hyderabad National Highway.
