Flintshire: Fundraising duo's 350km walk for cancer charity

Leader Live2 days ago
Gynette Janney, 53, from Hawarden, Flintshire, and Lucy Cummins, 57, from Maylandsea, Essex, will begin their '7 Ultras in 7 Days' on Saturday, July 12.
They will begin their journey with a 50km walk from Lewknor to Wantage in Oxfordshire.
Another 50km will be completed on day two, from Wantage to Avebury, Wiltshire.
They will then fly to the Netherlands.
On Monday, July 14, Gynette and Lucy will walk 50km from Arnhem to Nijmegen and back.
The final four days of the challenge will see the pair complete the Nijmegen Marches, an iconic walking event, completing 50km each day.
It is the second year that the duo has taken on a week-long walking event – their first challenge saw them walk from Saltney to London.
Gynette said: 'My walking journey started way back in 2001, when I completed the Full Moon (26.2 miles) at The MoonWalk London.
'I'd actually always wanted to take on the London Marathon, but to be honest, I didn't want to run it.
'I happened to read an article in a health magazine about The MoonWalk and thought it sounded perfect.
'I mentioned it to my friend Clare, who I'd also recently discovered wanted to do the London Marathon.
'We signed up for The MoonWalk, and the rest, as they say, is history!
'I've done The MoonWalk London every single year since, and the atmosphere has always been absolutely fantastic.
'Another reason that I continue walking and raising funds for Walk the Walk is that my auntie and two of my sisters-in-law have all been successfully treated for breast cancer.
'I've also got to know many other people who've been affected by breast cancer in different ways – this really spurs me on.
'Having become a regular marathon walker – I've done around 66 now – I took the step up to Ultra Marathons, of which I've now done 22 plus last year's 7 Ultras in 7 days challenge.
'It was at one of those events – The London to Brighton 100km challenge in 2013, that I bumped into Lucy!
'Since then, we've walked many, many miles together at events.
'Lucy and I can talk for England and that's what we do from start to finish.
'We live a long way from each other – I'm in North Wales and she's in Essex – so, apart from any walking events we do together, we might only see each other socially a couple of times a year.'
Lucy added: 'I must admit that I never used to be a long-distance walker!
'In my early twenties I was diagnosed with the chronic fatigue syndrome, ME.
'My main symptoms were severe leg and back spasms - on a good day, I could just about manage a maximum of 20 minutes' exercise at a time.
'After my ME diagnosis, my fitness levels slowly improved, until in 2006, my friend Karina asked me if I fancied walking an overnight marathon, through London, wearing a bra.
'That was my first ever MoonWalk London.
'In 2013 I took on my first 'London to Brighton' challenge – that's when I first met my walking buddy Gynette!
'Since then, we've completed dozens of ultra-marathons together, including London to Brighton many times, the Nijmegen Marches and the famous Camino trail in Spain.
'In 2014, my family's world was rocked when my big sister Ruth, who was five years older than me, was diagnosed with breast cancer.
'For years before her diagnosis, I'd been raising money and awareness for breast cancer charity Walk the Walk and now this cruel disease had hit incredibly close to home.
'Ruth was given the all-clear following treatment, but then in 2016, secondary breast cancer was discovered in her liver.
'She went into a hospice and died on 25th August that year.
'Gynette was a tower of strength for me when Ruth was so poorly – we have an incredible friendship.
'We walk together brilliantly and chat constantly.
'Walking such a long way, my approach is simply to put one foot in front of the other, for quite a long time!
'Gynette and I always support and encourage each other all the way and I can't wait to raise even more money for the wonderful charity Walk the Walk.'

Cruise ship worker shares secret meaning behind wearing black ring & why you may be approached on board

Wearing a pineapple patterned necklace could also give you unwanted attention BOAT-LOAD OF MYSTERY Cruise ship worker shares secret meaning behind wearing black ring & why you may be approached on board Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A FORMER cruise ship worker has revealed the reason you may be approached on board if you're wearing a black ring. Lucy Southerton, 28, shared that the innocent looking piece of jewellery actually has a jaw-dropping hidden meaning. Lucy, from Birmingham, revealed in the viral video, which has racked up more than one million views, that she discovered the secret whilst working in a spa on board a ship. She explained that after seeing a couple wearing matching upside down pineapple necklaces, she complimented them on the jewellery, and asked what the meaning behind the fruit chains was. The couple immediately erupted in to fits of laughter, and told Lucy: "Look, we're swingers, this is how people can identify us as swingers." Lucy, who spent a decade working on board cruise ships, continued to chat to the couple, and learned lots of other secret swinger signs, such as wearing a black ring on your left hand. She added: "There is a unicorn, which is basically a woman who wants to swing on her own - so wants to sleep with a couple. "And then a rhino is a single man willing to swing. "A mermaid is a married woman willing to swing with a couple on her own, and then rainbow is pretty obvious that they're happy to swing with everyone and anyone." These codes are not official codes used by cruise lines, but are simply discreet signals within the swinging community. She explained that as well as wearing these symbols as jewellery, some people also choose to place them on the doors of their cabins. Bare It All: Exploring the World's Best Nudist Destinations However, Lucy urged swingers on cruise ships to look out for other signs before approaching people wearing black rings, as this could be a simple "fashion statement". Lucy added that swingers commonly use phrases such as DDF which means "drug and disease free" and HMP, which means "height, weight proportional" and informs other swingers that they are not "overweight". She added that she came across swingers way more often on family cruises than she did on adults only cruises. Lucy explained that she believes that swinging has become more popular on cruise ships in recent years because it is easier to find other people who want to swing on an enclosed ship. What is Swinging? SWINGING, also known as partner swapping, is a sexual activity where partners in a committed relationship engage in sexual activities with other people. All parties involved must give explicit and enthusiastic consent. Open and honest communication between partners is crucial. Many swingers engage with a community or attend events specifically for swinging. Such activity can enhance intimacy and trust within the primary relationship. It provides an opportunity to explore sexual fantasies and desires. But it is not suitable for every relationship and requires a strong foundation of trust. Jealousy and emotional challenges may arise and need to be managed. However, she said that swingers must not have sex in public or on their balconies. "Just do it in your cabin like regular people", she said. YouTube users flooded the comments section to share their astonishment at the discovery. One person said: "I'll never forget the amount of attention I got in the buffet on my first ever cruise. "I bought shorts that had loads of little pineapples in all different directions. I innocently thought they were just 'nice and summery'". A second person said: "My partner bought me a nice black ring for Valentine's Day. "Damn… I'll have to have a chat with her".

Gary McKee to embark on latest challenge for Hospice at Home West Cumbria

Veteran fundraiser Gary McKee, who raised more than £1 million for charity by running 365 marathons in 365 days, is to embark on his latest challenge. McKee will now run 100 marathons in 100 days in 2026, culminating in the London Marathon with his son, Beau, aiming to raise £100,000 for Hospice at Home West Cumbria. McKee raised a combined total of more than £1.1 million for both Hospice at Home West Cumbria and Macmillan by running a marathon every day of 2023. Over the last five years, he has raised nearly £900,000 for Hospice at Home West Cumbria alone. 'Reaching that £1 million target for Hospice at Home West Cumbria has been in my sights for a long time, and with just £100,000 to go, the 100toLDN challenge is my way of giving it one last big push," said McKee. 'It's also special that Beau will be running the London Marathon with me at the end – he's been there throughout the journey, so it'll be a proud moment to cross the line together.' From 17 January to 26 April, he will run a marathon every day in his hometown of Cleator Moor. He will also travel around West Cumbria, running with schools and local community groups. 'This challenge is also a great chance to get back into the community – visiting schools, running with local groups, and encouraging people to get outdoors and stay active. That's always been a big part of what it's all about for me," continued McKee. 'Hospice at Home West Cumbria does incredible work supporting local families when they need it most. Every pound raised makes a difference, and I'm committed to doing whatever I can to help them keep going.' Hayley McKay, Director of Funding & Communication at Hospice at Home West Cumbria, said: 'When Gary contacted me to share his thoughts about a new challenge, I was initially lost for words. "He already does so much for us. I was taken aback that he still wants to do more, still wants to keep going, and still wants to raise more funds. 'It's going to be another tough challenge, but I do not doubt that Gary will achieve everything he sets out to do.' In 2023, the hospice appointed Gary as its Vice President in honour of his fundraising. Hayley added: 'As a small local charity, we cannot express how grateful we are to Gary for his continued support. "Every year, we care for hundreds of people across our region, providing them with wraparound support as theyface the toughest of times. This work, spanning the last four decades, has been made possible thanks to oursupporters and the incredible community. 'Hospice at Home West Cumbria can't wait to join Gary in his next chapter and celebrate with him his success.100toLDN here we go.'
