More than 1,000 Scots workers could lose jobs unless they accept pension cuts

Aberdeen-based energy giant Baker Hughes has slapped thousands of its UK staff with redundancy warnings PENSION ROW More than 1,000 Scots workers could lose jobs unless they accept pension cuts Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MORE than 1,000 oil and gas workers in Scotland have been hit with a brutal ultimatum — accept a pension cut or face the axe. Energy giant Baker Hughes has slapped thousands of its UK staff with redundancy warnings, as it pushes through a controversial shake-up of pension terms. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak visits the Baker Hughes Subsea Centre of Excellence in Montrose with then- Secretary of State for Scotland, Alister Jack. Credit: PA The US-based company — a major player in Aberdeen's oil and gas sector — has handed out formal redundancy notices to over 4,500 employees in what's being branded a 'fire and rehire" threat. Sources say bosses have warned employees that if they don't agree, the company might go down the 'dismiss and re-engage' route — a legal, but controversial tactic due to be clamped down on by new UK laws. An insider told the Press and Journal: 'Essentially the business is looking to impose a 25% reduction in pension contributions under an excessive timeline, which currently is legal, but looks to be timed just before the amendment of the employee rights bill that would outlaw this practice. 'Too often oil and gas workers of the UK are forgotten about, and need to be vocal'. Newer workers who joined after 1 August 2024 already face lower pension terms and won't be affected by the latest move. But others could be hit hard from 1 January 2026, unless a deal is struck. Baker Hughes runs key hubs in Montrose, Portlethen, Peterhead, and Dyce, with its UK headquarters in Aberdeen, managing operations as far as Norway and the Caspian. To add fuel to the fire, the row comes just weeks after the firm sealed a £900 million pension deal to protect payouts for over 7,000 retired staff. A Baker Hughes spokesperson said: 'Baker Hughes regularly reviews its global benefit offerings to ensure that we remain an employer of choice, while also maintaining sustainable business practices. "In the wake of a review that began in 2024, the company recently communicated an upcoming proposed change in pension plans which would align with the current offering to new hires in the UK from 1st August 2024. Rachel Reeves cries at PMQs as Starmer refuses to say if she'll stay in job "These plans would keep Baker Hughes within the top 25% of employers in the UK in terms of pension contributions. "The HR1 form is statutorily required by the UK government. "It was part of a broader communications package to our employees. "This communications package provided additional context and background on this proposal.'

Man makes £20k a month from side hustle that 11m Brits could also do – it's effortless and can be done all year round

Watch the video for more top tips on how to start your own side hustle CASH IN Man makes £20k a month from side hustle that 11m Brits could also do – it's effortless and can be done all year round A MAN has revealed he makes a whopping £20,000 a month from a little known side hustle, that requires hardly any effort. Barrie Taube, owns 150 garages and 300 car parking spaces across the country, and rents them out to people in need of storage space. Advertisement 2 Barrie makes £20k a month from renting out garages Credit: Linkedin 2 11 million people in the UK have a garage, with many left empty Credit: Getty Renting Out Garages The property investor and surveyor charges between £50 to £150 a month for garages, and between £30 and £60 for car parking spaces. 'We rent to people who live in blocks of flats; we will approach them and see if they want to rent them out", Barrie, who owns that garages through his business Southern Land Securities, told The i Paper. "For the car parking spaces, they might have an extra car or just want an extra space." Barrie revealed that he also rents out his parking spaces to people who need them for a short period of time, such as if they are attending a football match or a concert. Advertisement In the UK, an estimated 11 million people own a garage, with half of these not used to store cars. That means that millions of Brits could also be cashing in on this side hustle. Hardly Any Maintenance The investor also owns many properties which he rents out to tenants, but revealed that renting out garages comes with many advantages, such as the lack of upkeep. 'There's not much to maintain, just the roof, walls and the garage door", he said. Advertisement 'If the roof is leaking, you make the decision whether to mend it but, in general, when someone signs the lease, they agree to maintain it and to give it back in the condition they rented it in.' He added that it also costs a lot less to purchase garages, which cost around £10,000 to £30,000 in most locations. I earn cash by selling 'actual rubbish' on eBay - I flogged a freebie I found on the floor by a bin for £10, it's crazy In Mayfair, garages can sell for up to £300,000, however, Barrie explained that people in these areas are happy to pay much more to keep their posh cars safe. 'If you had a garage in Mayfair, you could get £500 a month or more in rent", he said. Advertisement "If someone has a car worth a few hundred thousand pounds, they will pay this to know it's safe.' How to make cash from renting out your garage If you have spare garage space, you can make cash by renting it out for storage, using websites such as Stashbee and Storemates. You can also advertise your garage on Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree. When listing your garage, make sure to include key details, such as photographs, the size of the space, notable features, and whether the area has its own independent access. It is also a good idea to arrange viewings, to make sure the space is right for potential renters. Make sure to take any costs into account, as Stashbee charges a 5% fee on bookings, while Storemates deducts 16.5% plus 20p from each payment. Gumtree generally offers free advertisements, but specific surcharges apply for garage storage or car parking listings (£8.79) and for linking to an external website (£6.59). According to Stuart Collar-Brown, from online auctioneer Bidx1 UK garages are much more profitable than buy-to-let properties, pulling in yields averaging 10 percent, compared with a 4.75 percent average for rental properties. Landlords Ditching Properties To Rent Out Garages 'Garages offer a great alternative to storage costs for tradesmen, so they'll perform well in densely populated residential areas, especially where houses are rows of Victorian houses [and] where parking on the street is tricky due to a lack of driveways, so demand will outstrip supply.' He added that, in light of the Renters Reform Bill, which is set to come in over the coming months, many landlords are switching their business to garages. Advertisement 'We're definitely seeing a shift of residential landlords into non-residential assets, so this would include commercial, industrial, garages and other similar asset classes,' he said. 'The sheer amount of red tape that landlords have to wade through now is becoming too much hassle, so they are looking for an easier way to earn yields on their investment." Arguably, the council are no longer building garages either, so the fact that they are not building more suggests, long term, there will be some capital appreciation too.' However, Barrie revealed that since many people have now cottoned on to the fact that garages are good investments, they are reluctant to sell. Advertisement He added that it can be harder to get loans on garages than properties as banks often ask for larger deposits. Plus, he revealed: "If a tenant fills a garage with rubbish and then refuses to pay their rent, you have to pay for it to be cleared out".

Full list of discontinued drinks & snacks coming back this July after being away for years – including 80s retro sweet

A nostalgic 90s alcopop is about to make a comeback TASTY TREATS Full list of discontinued drinks & snacks coming back this July after being away for years – including 80s retro sweet Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) FROM an iconic retro sweet to a nostalgic noughties chocolate bar, a whole host of discontinued snacks and drinks are returning to UK shelves this month. Brands sometimes discontinue tasty treats after they fall in popularity, often leaving shoppers devastated. White Malteasers White Malteasers were axed 11 years ago, but eagle-eyed shoppers have begun spotting them back in stores when doing their weekly shop in Morrisons. Customers can buy a 30g pack for £1.05, 74g pack for £2.50 or a larger 126g sharing bag for £2.95. 6 White Malteasers have returned to Morrison's stores Credit: Facebook Morrisons said the white Maltesers are a permanent addition and available in the majority of its stores. Their return comes after shoppers pleaded with Mars to bring them back. The treat first launched in 2003 but was taken off shelves back in 2014. The spin on the classic milk chocolate Maltesers was originally launched as a seasonal product but was made permanent due to its popularity Dairy Milk Balls Snack fans have spotted another chocolatey treat on supermarket shelves this month, and have likened in to a discontinued Cadbury product. Iconic 80s retro sweet RETURNS to UK supermarket shelves after a decade The treats have been spotted in Iceland for £3.50, or £6 for two packs. Wham Bar Iconic retro sweet, the Wham Bar has made a return to Iceland stores, in the form of an ice lolly. Posting to the NewfoodsUK Facebook group, one shopper said: "Wham Ice Cream Lollies are back at Iceland Foods." 6 Wham Bars were first launched in the 1980s Credit: Facebook/Newfoodsuk In the comments section, one person raved: "These sound amazing!" How to save money on chocolate We all love a bit of chocolate from now and then, but you don't have to break the bank buying your favourite bar. Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how to cut costs... Go own brand - if you're not too fussed about flavour and just want to supplant your chocolate cravings, you'll save by going for the supermarket's own brand bars. Shop around - if you've spotted your favourite variety at the supermarket, make sure you check if it's cheaper elsewhere. Websites like let you compare prices on products across all the major chains to see if you're getting the best deal. Look out for yellow stickers - supermarket staff put yellow, and sometimes orange and red, stickers on to products to show they've been reduced. They usually do this if the product is coming to the end of its best-before date or the packaging is slightly damaged. Buy bigger bars - most of the time, but not always, chocolate is cheaper per 100g the larger the bar. So if you've got the appetite, and you were going to buy a hefty amount of chocolate anyway, you might as well go bigger. Another said: "I wonder if Rockets are back too!" The lollies are available exclusively at Iceland and a pack of four sweet treats costs just £2.50. Wham Bars were first introduced back in the 80s by Scottish confectioners McCowan's, and at their peak sold 30 million bars a year. In 2011, it was announced that McCowan's were going into administration, but the sweet has since been bought by Tangerine Confectionery. Barcardi Breezers Nostalgic alcopop, Barcadi Breezer is also making a return to stores, after it was axed in 2015. The fruity alcopops were once a rite of passage for teenagers having their first alcoholic drinks or going clubbing for the first time. 6 Barcardi Breezers were first launched in the 90s Credit: Barcardi Many will have fond memories - and now they'll be able to enjoy the nostalgic drink once again, just in time for the summer. They'll be landing in B&M from July, Aldi from August and Sainsbury's from September. Marmite Peanut Butter Marmite Peanut Butter has also made a permanent return to stores, just nine months after it was axed. The breakfast spread first landed on shelves back in 2019, but was axed just five years later. However, Unilever has announced that the tasty treat is now back for good, with shoppers able to purchase it from Tesco, Sainsbury's and Ocado.
