Gonorrhoea cases in Scotland remain high amid surge among older men

Daily Recorda day ago
Gonorrhoea cases remain alarmingly high in Scotland, a new report has found, with a spike among older men prompting the launch of a new vaccine programme.
Gonorrhoea cases in Scotland remain at worryingly high levels with a sharp rise among older men prompting urgent action from health officials.
Public Health Scotland (PHS) has revealed that more than 4,500 people were diagnosed with the Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) in 2024.

While overall figures have dipped slightly from the record highs of 5,999 diagnoses in 2023, the number of cases is still well above pre-pandemic levels – and there's been "concerning increases" noted among older men.

Gonorrhoea, once thought to be declining in Scotland, has surged in recent years. According to PHS, the number of recorded infections has more than doubled since 2018.
From 2023 to 2024, diagnoses decreased in men under 30 but incidence remains high and has increased in those 30 years and older.
The disease has become increasingly resistant to antibiotics, making early detection and prevention even more critical. Experts say the findings show how STI's continue to pose a "significant public health threat" and underline the need for targeted interventions.
It comes as the Scottish Government recently announced a new vaccination campaign, which will begin this August, after Public Health Minister Jenni Minto said action was "urgent".
The move follows advice from the UK's Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), which backed the use of the MenB (meningococcal B) vaccine to help curb the spread of gonorrhoea.

Dr Sam Ghebrehewet, Head of the Vaccination and Immunisation Division at Public Health Scotland (PHS), said: 'With gonorrhoea diagnoses having increased in recent years, the offer of the MenB vaccine to those at highest risk of exposure is a welcome new intervention. This vaccination programme is expected to help control and prevent the spread of gonorrhoea.
'We are working with the Scottish Government and colleagues across NHS Boards to finalise plans for the roll out of this targeted vaccination offering from August 2025.'

Gonorrhoea can cause significant pain and discomfort and in rare cases, life-threatening sepsis. The highest rate of positive tests for gonorrhoea in the last five years was consistently observed in gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM).
Health chiefs believe thousands of cases of gonorrhoea could be prevented through the new vaccine programme. The S cottish Government has put aside £280,000 of funding for it.
The vaccine – which is already used to protect infants against meningitis – has been shown in trials to cut gonorrhoea cases by over 30%. It will be offered to gay and bisexual men at highest risk of infection, those involved in selling or exchanging sex regardless of gender and those who sexual health clinic professionals assess as being at a similar risk level.

Speaking at the Public Health Scotland Scottish Vaccination and Immunisation Conference in Edinburgh, Public Health Minister Jenni Minto said:
'This action is urgent and timely since the number of diagnoses has been high and the disease is becoming increasingly difficult to treat with antibiotics.

'The science tells us that this vaccine will potentially protect thousands of people and prevent the spread of infection."

Health chiefs have warned that while the vaccine is a vital tool, it's not a silver bullet.

Condoms remain the most effective protection against STIs, and those with new or multiple partners are being urged to continue using them and get tested regularly.
Left untreated, gonorrhoea can lead to serious complications – including infertility and, in rare cases, blood infections.

PIP payments of up to £749 each month for people with these 87 muscle or joint conditions

More than one million people with musculoskeletal conditions receive between £29.20 and £187.45 each week. Personal Independence Payment (PIP) - information The latest figures from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) show there are now more than 1.1 million adults across Great Britain receiving support through Personal Independence Payment (PIP) for over 85 musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions. Only 2,969 Scots remain on PIP with 756 claiming for muscle or joint issues. The Scottish figure is low because case transfers from PIP to Adult Disability Payment (ADP) is now in its final phase of migration. People with a Scottish postcode in receipt of a DWP disability benefit will be transferred to the devolved system before the end of this year. Musculoskeletal conditions are injuries and disorders that affect the human body's movement or musculoskeletal system such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, discs and blood vessels. Arthritis is a general term that refers to many of these different conditions, however, some common conditions include osteoarthritis, back pain, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, gout, polymyalgia rheumatica, lupus and ankylosing spondylitis. If you are over 16 and under State Pension age, you may be able to claim PIP - or ADP in Scotland - to help with a musculoskeletal condition, and if your ability to work is limited due to your symptoms you could be eligible for 'new style' Employment and Support Allowance (ESA). The latest DWP figures also show that there are now 3.7m people in England and Wales claiming PIP. The latest statistics from Social Security Scotland show that at the end of April, some 46,265 people were receiving ADP. A successful claim for PIP or ADP is now worth between £29.20 and £187.45 each week in additional financial support and as the benefit is paid every four weeks, this amounts to between £116.80 and £749.80 every pay period. The average processing time for new PIP claims is 15 weeks which means applications submitted this month could be processed - and back payments issued - by the end of September. New claims for ADP currently take seven weeks on average to process, so a new claim submitted this month could be processed by the end of August. PIP claimants with musculoskeletal conditions The latest data shows that at the end of April, over one million people were receiving support through PIP for Musculoskeletal conditions. Scotland: 756 (does not include case transfer or new claims of Adult Disability Payment) England and Wales: 1,152,341 Living abroad: 974 Total: 1,154,878 Below is the list of 87 musculoskeletal conditions being supported through PIP to help with either daily living, mobility needs or a combination of both components. It is not definitive, so if your condition does not appear, don't be put off making a claim as an award for PIP or ADP is about how the condition affects you, not the condition itself. For each task they will look at: ‌ whether you can do it safely how long it takes you how often your condition affects this activity whether you need help to do it, from a person or using extra equipment How are PIP and ADP paid? PIP and ADP are usually paid every four weeks unless you are terminally ill, in which case it is paid weekly. It will be paid directly into your bank, building society or credit union account. ADP is paid at the same rates as PIP. ‌ What are the PIP and ADP payment rates? You will need an assessment to work out the level of financial help you will receive and your rate will be regularly reviewed to make sure you are getting the right support. PIP is made up of two components: Daily living Mobility ‌ Whether you get one or both of these and how much depends on how severely your condition affects you. You will be paid the following amounts per week depending on your circumstances: Daily living ‌ Standard rate: £73.90 Enhanced rate: £1110.40 Mobility Standard rate: £29.20 Enhanced rate: £77.05 ‌ How you are assessed You will be assessed by an independent healthcare professional to help the DWP determine the level of financial support, if any, you need, for PIP. Face-to-face consultations for health-related benefits are offered alongside video calls, telephone and paper-based assessments - it's important to be aware that the health professional and DWP determine which type of assessment is best suited for each claimant. Amazon's 'life saver' insect bite pen that 'stops itching immediately' now £15

As we head into the summer, plenty of Brits will be planning a camping trip or beach break. But if you're prone to being bitten, you may want to consider this itch-reducing pen As we're well into the summer season, many are eagerly ticking off the days until they can escape on their sun-soaked holidays and immerse themselves in a different culture. Meanwhile, others are planning camping trips, be it for a festival or a getaway with friends and family. While the anticipation of these events may have us buzzing, it's easy to overlook the nuisance of insect and mosquito bites. These pesky bites, leaving your skin red and itchy, can put a bit of a damper on your spirits. For those who suffer severe reactions to bites, it might be worth considering an insect heat pen as a solution. Luckily, Amazon has slashed the price of the Beurer BR90 Insect Bite Healer from £32.99 down to £14.97 in a limited-time offer. The Beurer Bite Healer offers relief from bite symptoms by using a rapidly heating ceramic plate to speed up the healing process after an insect bite or sting. It provides itch and swelling relief without the need for medication or chemicals. This device, which is safe for pregnant women, also features an optional light. So, if you're bitten in the middle of the night, you can accurately target the bite without having to switch on the bedroom light, reports the Daily Record. It's worth noting that this gadget operates on AAA batteries. The manufacturer claims that users can get up to 300 uses out of the device before needing to replace the batteries. Shoppers on Amazon have been turning their attention to the RROFKA Insect Sting and Bite Relief, retailing at £24.98, for its dual functionality. The gadget isn't just a heat pen but also integrates a suction tool to extract post-bite irritants. Convenience is key with this device given that it's both cordless and rechargeable. Meanwhile, Currys offers a portable solution with the HEAT IT Classic USB Type-C Smart Insect Bite Healer, conveniently discounted from £29.99 to £23.99. This nifty device provides immediate relief with concentrated heat and has the added perk of running off your smartphone – provided it's USB-C compatible. On the note of effectiveness, the Beurer Bite Healer boasts an impressive 4.3-star rating on Amazon, corroborated by more than 45,000 reviewers. Its popularity surges as the summer approaches, with purchases exceeding 1,000 units in just the past month. A satisfied customer shared their relief: "Got a bite on my leg and woke up with a very itchy lump behind my knee. Used the heat pad on it when I got up on the 3 second mode and it pretty much stopped itching instantly! I was very impressed and relieved!" Echoing the enthusiasm, another five-star commentary highlighted: "Amazing little tool which works very effectively and the ONLY thing that takes away the itch completely! I would highly recommend it!!!" Yet, a word of caution comes from another buyer who notes the importance of prompt application: "The snag is: You need to get to the sting pretty quickly after it happens - which means carrying this little gizmo around with you." Some customers have voiced their discomfort about the warmth, with one shopper remarking: "The 3 seconds of heat can get pretty intense on the less fleshy parts of the body (elbow, knuckles, ankles) but is bearable on other areas." Yet, a leading reviewer chimed in with praise, saying: "Using this stops the itching immediately. It feels a bit too hot at first, but you soon get used to it. We also noticed that bites treated with this healed faster than those that hadn't been. I also bought the travel version." Another satisfied customer shared their relief: "I react very badly to bites. But this machine takes the sting out of the bite and stops them from being itchy. Completely changed my experience and made my life so much more manageable going abroad. I couldn't go away without it now! A life saver."
