Bahrain made waves on the international stage as two high-ranking officials represented the Kingdom at the Third United Nations Ocean Conference held in the coastal city of Nice, France, from June 9 to 13, 2025.
His Excellency Eng. Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak, Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, and His Excellency Mr. Hamad Yaqoub Al Mahmeed, Director General of the Office of the Prime Minister, took part in this high-level summit, accompanied by His Excellency Mr. Essam Abdulaziz Al Jassim, Bahrain's Ambassador to France.
Under the theme 'Accelerating Action and Mobilizing All Actors to Conserve and Sustainably Use the Ocean,' the conference—co-hosted by France and Costa Rica—brought together a diverse global audience of government officials, UN and NGO representatives, financial institutions, researchers, and civil society groups to address one of the planet's most pressing environmental challenges.
Minister Al Mubarak highlighted Bahrain's firm commitment to environmental stewardship, grounded in the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the forward-thinking directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister. He reaffirmed Bahrain's ongoing efforts to align national projects and policies with global sustainability goals, particularly through the 'Blueprint Bahrain' initiative, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
"The Kingdom stands in solidarity with the international community in tackling climate change and protecting natural resources, especially our oceans and seas," stated Minister Al Mubarak. "Through strategic collaboration with UN bodies, Bahrain continues to yield tangible outcomes in environmental sustainability across multiple sectors."
The UN Ocean Conference supports Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG 14): conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas, and marine resources. Discussions included addressing plastic pollution, curbing overfishing, and expanding marine protected areas.
A key outcome of the conference is the expected endorsement of the Nice Ocean Action Plan and the Declaration on Ocean Preservation and Sustainable Blue Economies, setting a roadmap for intensified global cooperation and concrete measures to safeguard marine ecosystems for future generations.

Israeli PM says to brief army on Gaza war plan Jerusalem

TDT | Jerusalem Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised Monday to update Israel's Gaza war plan, a day before a UN Security Council meeting on the fate of hostages still held in the Palestinian territory. Addressing a cabinet meeting nearly 22 months into the war, the Israeli leader told ministers that later in the week he would instruct the military on how 'to achieve the three war objectives we have set'. Netanyahu's announcement comes as he faces increasing pressure to return the remaining hostages in Gaza, as well as mounting international calls to address the dire food situation in the Gaza Strip. Israel -- backed by the United States and Panama -- is preparing to convene a UN Security Council meeting on Tuesday to highlight the fate of the hostages. At the weekly cabinet meeting, Netanyahu reiterated that Israel's three war goals remain 'the defeat of the enemy, the release of our hostages and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel'. His statement came after hundreds of retired Israeli security chiefs wrote to US President Donald Trump to urge him to convince Netanyahu to end the war. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said ahead of the UN session in New York that 'the world must putan end to the phenomenon of kidnapping civilians. It must be frontand centre on the worldstage'. Of the 251 hostagesseized during Hamas'sOctober 2023 attack onIsrael, 49 are still held inthe Palestinian territory, including 27 the Israelimilitary says are dead.

UAE Youth Voice the Future at UN Sustainable Development Forum

Young leaders from the UAE joined global change-makers in New York to share their vision for a sustainable future at the United Nations Sustainable Development Forum 2025. The session, titled 'Voices for 2045: Youth Shaping the Future,' was hosted by the UAE's Permanent Mission to the UN and organized by the General Secretariat of the National Committee for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It brought together 40 youth participants, including members of the UN Major Group for Children and Youth, to discuss how today's young generation can shape a world beyond 2030. The dialogue encouraged participants to share ideas for the Extended Sustainable Development Goals (XDGs 2045), a global vision first introduced at the 2023 World Governments Summit. Through online surveys and discussions, youth highlighted their priorities: empowering young people to take part in policy-making, driving innovation, protecting the environment, and ensuring access to quality education and healthcare. His Excellency Abdullah Nasser Lootah, Chair of the National Committee for SDGs, stressed that youth are not just observers but key partners in shaping development pathways. 'Listening to youth is not enough,' he said. 'Their ideas must become part of global decision-making to create a future that keeps pace with the world's changes.' The session focused on three themes — empathy, passion, and action — reflecting the spirit of young people determined to make a positive impact. Participants shared the challenges they face and the bold solutions they believe are needed to achieve a more inclusive and resilient future. By hosting this session, the UAE reaffirmed its commitment to empowering youth and supporting global efforts toward sustainable development. The discussions also linked to the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, where countries review their progress on key goals, including health, gender equality, economic growth, ocean protection, and global partnerships. With young voices leading the way, the UAE and its international partners aim to create a world where the next generation is not just prepared for 2045 but actively shaping it.

Hunt for truth as aid deaths rise : US envoy visits Gaza sites, promises more food

President Donald Trump's special envoy promised a plan to deliver more food to Gaza after inspecting a US-backed distribution centre yesterday, as the UN human rights office said Israeli forces had killed hundreds of hungry Palestinians waiting for aid. The visit by Steve Witkoff came as a report from global advocacy group Human Rights Watch accused Israeli forces of presiding over 'regular bloodbaths' close to US-backed aid points run by the private Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). The UN human rights office in the Palestinian territories said at least 1,373 people had been killed seeking aid in Gaza since May 27 — 105 of them in the last two days of July. 'Most of these killings were committed by the Israeli military,' the UN office said, breaking down the death toll into 859 killed near GHF food sites and 514 along routes used by UN and aid agency convoys. Witkoff said he had spent more than five hours inside Gaza, in a post accompanied by a photograph of himself wearing a protective vest and meeting staff at a GHF distribution centre. 'The purpose of the visit was to give POTUS a clear understanding of the humanitarian situation and help craft a plan to deliver food and medical aid to the people of Gaza,' he said, referring to Trump. Trump himself echoed this in a phone call with US news site Axios, touting a plan to 'get people fed.' 'We want to help people. We want to help them live. We want to get people fed. It is something that should have happened a long time ago,' Trump said, according to Axios. The US leader repeated Israeli claims that Hamas is responsible for stealing much of the aid that makes it into Gaza, but did not say whether his plan would involve reinforcing GHF or creating a whole new mechanism, the report said. The foundation said it had delivered its 100-millionth meal in Gaza during the visit by Witkoff and US Ambassador Mike Huckabee.
