Nostalgia: Akshay Kumar bursts into laughter watching his first-ever screen test

Time of India10-06-2025
Akshay Kumar
is surely one of the most versatile actors in Bollywood and his career journey is surely inspirational. Before the action star image, before the mega-hits and patriotic blockbusters, Akshay Kumar was just another young man chasing his Bollywood dream.
Let's take a look at a rare throwback clip which gives a peek at his very first screen test, shot for his 1991 debut, 'Saugandh'. The footage resurfaced during a rerun of 'Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai', where host
Farooq Shaikh
surprised Akshay with the video during their chat.
That Hair, That Energy, Even Akshay Couldn't Hold Back
As the screen lit up with his younger self showing off martial arts moves, Akshay burst into laughter. 'Look at my hair!' he said, clearly amused and slightly embarrassed.
With his long locks and raw performance, it's a far cry from the polished star we know today. Farooq joined in, and the two shared a good laugh. It's not often that we get to see stars watch themselves in such early, awkward moments—and enjoy them with such honesty.
From Nervous Newcomer to Bollywood Mainstay
The clip may be from the '90s, but it still resonates. Akshay started with small roles, slowly carving a niche with his action skills.

Shiv Shakti Actor Akshay Nalwade on his creative boundaries; says ‘I'm not comfortable taking up roles in bold content-driven projects'

Shiv Shakti: Tap Tyag Tandav actor Akshay Nalwade, currently seen playing Garud Dev in the popular mythological drama, believes in choosing work that upholds dignity and purpose. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The actor, known for his clear approach to career choices, revealed that he never hesitates to turn down roles that don't align with his values. 'I have turned down roles. Although I rarely say no to projects, I'm not comfortable taking up roles in bold content-driven projects. I'm a family-oriented person, and I want to be known for quality work and good content,' he stated firmly. Akshay shared that every role he accepts must pass through what he calls an 'ethical filter.' He explained, 'First, I assess whether the role respects human dignity—not just for my character, but for the overall narrative. I avoid roles that promote harmful stereotypes, unnecessary objectification, or glorify violence.' His boundaries are equally firm when it comes to physical exposure or intimate scenes. 'I respect my boundaries—creatively, ethically, and emotionally—because I believe that's what makes me a more authentic and responsible performer,' Akshay shared. Talking about his working style, he emphasized his collaborative approach. 'I always follow a principle: I discuss my perspective with the director and crew. Based on that conversation, I play the character as directed. I believe in working as per the director's vision. I do offer my inputs, but ultimately, I follow the captain's call,' he explained. When asked about his thoughts on women-centric roles, Akshay acknowledged the positive change. 'Films like Kahaani, Mardaani, Raazi, Queen, Tumhari Sulu, and Gangubai have portrayed women as decision-makers, fighters, survivors, and leaders. These characters are no longer one-dimensional—there's real depth,' he said. 'I do believe there's been a visible shift away from stereotypical portrayals of women as just love interests or homemakers,' Akshay concluded.

Saiyaara breaks the box office on Monday evening; Aims to match Saturday numbers

Saiyaara, directed by Mohit Suri and starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda is on a dream run at the box office. After a much higher than expected Rs 21.25 crore net on day 1, the movie collected Rs 25.75 crore on day 2. It ended the weekend with a blistering Rs 35 crore, setting it up beautifully for the weekdays. Monday's shows until evening have ended and the night shows are going on. With an expected Rs 22 - 23 crore net on day 4, Saiyaara has done the unthinkable. Saiyaara Is Expected To Net Rs 23 Crore On 1st Monday; Higher Than Opening Day And Close To 1st Saturday Numbers Saiyaara has become the first Indian movie with opening day collections of over Rs 20 crore to net higher than its opening day, on first Monday. If the night shows are stronger than we expect, a number close to or equal to the first Saturday can't be discounted for the Mohit Suri directorial. Saiyaara Shall Stand At Around Rs 105 Crore Net After 4 Days After 4 days, Saiyaara will be standing at Rs 105 crore net or so. For a movie that wasn't expected to open above Rs 4 crore, this 4 day number is unimaginable. What will be even crazier is to expect how much the movie will collect in its full run. The wave of the film is getting stronger by the day and no number looks small enough. Saiyaara Tuesday Bookings Are Phenomenal Bookings for Saiyaara are robust for Tuesday as well. The 'discount Tuesday' offer in most theatres across India should ensure higher footfalls than even Monday, though the collections are likely to see a slight drop since the average ticket prices will be lower. Saiyaara's Week 1 Numbers Shall Be Equal To The Lifetime Collections Of 2025's Biggies After week 1, Saiyaara will be standing with numbers that are equal to the lifetime collections of 2025's biggies - Housefull 5, Sitaare Zameen Par and Raid 2. It will only be standing behind Chhaava. Will Saiyaara be able to come remotely close to Chhaava's lifetime numbers is something that will take a few weeks to know. Saiyaara In Theatres
