Brook smashed a brilliant counterattacking century in a chase of 374 and added 195 runs for the fourth wicket alongside Joe Root, who also struck a ton. When the duo was batting, it looked as if England would seal the series on Day 4, but Brook tried to charge at Akash Deep and was caught by Mohammed Siraj. Krishna and Siraj then changed the momentum back in India's favour as India levelled the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar series 2-2. 'When he (Brook) walked into the crease at 100/3, England were not in the match at all and when he took those chances against Akash Deep, England were staring down the barrel and a big defeat was reckoning but when he got out it was the moment that Harry Brook could have cherished. He could have walked outside The Oval with his bat held high alongwith Joe Root who broke records after records and could have won the series 3-1 for England but he played reckless shot and it was his punished of that was why England lost the match and ended up drawing the series,' said Ashwin on his YouTube show Ash ki baat. 'As a captain, as a coach, you can proclaim to the world that this is your brand of cricket. They can say that Brook played the way we wanted him to play. He embraced our beliefs. All of this is easier said than done but Test cricket needs a certain amount of balance. Yes, I agree that this approach did get you runs in the first innings but in the fourth innings, if you are playing on 100 and the finish line is in sight, then it is your responsibility to see your team through,' he added. Ashwin went on to say that England disrespected cricketing gods and that was why the conditions changed in favour of Indian pacers out of nowhere. 'Brook definitely missed that opportunity and it all fell on Root's shoulders and for India's good, the conditions also changed, and such things happen when the cricketing gods are disrespected. The way England disrespected the cricketing gods, even the clouds came together, cried on the pitch and allowed the ball to move a lot,' said Ashwin.

The veteran criticised England's high-risk approach to get the remaining 35 runs in the morning session. However, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna bowled tight lengths and took regular wickets to edge out England in the series final to level the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2-2. "I do not want to be too hard on a team that has had a lot of misfortune this week. They went in without perhaps their most important-ever cricketer, and then lost a key bowler on the opening day. England lost by six runs to India, effectively playing with 10 men, so I do not want to be too critical," Vaughan wrote in his column at The Telegraph. "But the truth is, England panicked. The closer they got, within 70, they tried to be more high-risk. The approach was wrong on the final morning. It was too risky. If it takes 15 overs, so be it. You do not need to whizz 35 runs in five overs. All it needed was one steady head. Three of the last seven wickets were players dancing down the wicket to seamers. "If India lost in that fashion, we would have said they yipped up. If South Africa lost like that, we would say they choked. It was that bad a miss. The defeat will really hurt England. When you know you should win a game, it is so painful," he added. Chasing 374, England were bowled out for 367, with Siraj picking a sensational 5-104 while Krishna bagged four scalps to clinch a historic win for India. England were propped up by centuries by Harry Brook (111) and Joe Root (105), but in the end, that proved insufficient.

India may have ended the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in a 2-2 draw — extending their 15-year wait for a Test series win in England — but the contest offered more positives and promise than many expected. Chief among them was Shubman Gill's captaincy. Neither head coach Gautam Gambhir nor chief selector Ajit Agarkar's backing could immediately quell the doubts. But all questions were put to rest after the Oval thriller, where India pulled off a dramatic six-run heist to level the series. Gill was named Player of the Series for leading India's batting charge, scoring 754 runs in 10 innings — the most ever by an Indian captain in a Test series and second only to Don Bradman's 810 runs in the 1936–37 Ashes. Following his heroics, former cricketer Mohammad Kaif backed Gill to take over India's ODI captaincy as well, even as questions grow around Rohit Sharma's international future. 'He will get the ODI captaincy as well because we don't know how long Rohit Sharma will continue as captain. Gill is ready to take over. He scores in white-ball. He has performed well as captain here in Tests and led from the front. When you go with a young team, you have to do both things – score with the bat and do well as captain. A brilliant tour for him overall,' he said on his YouTube channel. 'Shubman Gill, as captain, created opportunities with both hands in this series. When he became captain, there were many questions as to why he was made captain, looking at his Test record. A young captain reached England under a lot of pressure with a young team. He answered with his bat and it came to a point where he was compared to breaking Sir Don Bradman's record. Such a strong comeback with the bat,' Kaif said. The ODIs remain the only format in which Rohit remains active. He retired from the T20Is in June 2024 after leading India to the T20 World Cup win in Barbados and then announced his shock exit from Test cricket in May earlier this year, just weeks before the announcement of the India squad for the tour of England. Although the chatter around the future of Rohit in ODI cricket is slowly gathering pace, BCCI had confirmed upon his Test retirement that the 37-year-old will remain the skipper in the 50-over format. Earlier in May, Rohit's childhood coach Dinesh Lad said that the India great would like to bow out from international cricket by winning the ODI World Cup, which has eluded India since 2011 when the team led by MS Dhoni lifted the trophy. "His [Rohit's] aim is to win the 2027 ODI World Cup and then retire," Lad told PTI. "His target was the World Test Championship, but unfortunately we didn't qualify. Now, it's the 2027 World Cup... I also want him to win the 2027 World Cup and then retire." The 2027 Cricket World Cup is scheduled to be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in October and November. Rohit will next appear in the three-match ODI series in Australia, which will begin on October 19 in Perth.
