'She has been taken for medical examination to check if she had also swallowed cocaine bullets,' she said.

'It could have been my child': community fumes over Joburg mom who gave 'drugs' to young son
A woman and three men from Newclare appeared briefly in the Johannesburg magistrate's court on Monday facing charges of attempted murder and child abuse after a viral video showed the woman's toddler being coerced to smoke 'a harmful substance'. The case was postponed to Thursday, to allow for verification of alternative addresses submitted by the defence. The video, which was shared on social media and led to the mother's arrest on July 29, saw the woman and her friends getting the four-year-old boy to light and smoke what appeared to be a Mandrax and dagga-laced bottleneck pipe. 'We cannot say it is drugs at this point, the investigations are ongoing. It is safe to say the child was placed in danger and that is why the state has removed the child to a place of safety,' NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said outside court. The NPA intends to oppose the accused's release on bail, citing the sensitivity of the matter and the victim's age. Mjonondwane asked the public to stop sharing the footage. 'It is dismaying that such videos are circulating. We have taken necessary steps and appeal to the public to stop sharing them. The victim is a minor, we must protect his dignity and the integrity of the investigation.' A woman who identified herself as a relative of one of the accused expressed heartbreak over the incident. Despite her ties to the accused, she said she chose to attend the hearing in solidarity with the victim. 'I am here because it could have been my child too. I am also a mother. 'In our community drugs are a huge problem, but nobody listens to us,' she told TimesLIVE. 'We as coloured people do not get recognised by government. We cry out when shootings happen, when kids are lost to drugs and no one hears us. Now suddenly everyone cares, but where were they when we were fighting this battle alone?' Community activist Melissa Davids said: 'We want justice and we want it as in yesterday. 'The justice system is failing us, too many children are being abused and nothing happens.' Davids said she receives constant calls about child abuse cases that do not make headlines or reach social workers. 'On my way here, I got a call about a mother who tried to give up her child because she could not take care of them. She said [the department of] social development turned her away.' Davids believes there is systemic neglect of coloured communities, citing unemployment, drugs and lack of social services. 'Our people have nothing. That is why so many kids are exposed to drugs and violence. The government ignores us until it is too late,' she said.

An inquest into the death of late former Bosasa boss Gavin Watson was held at the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on May 30 resulting in the closure of the culpable homicide case. Image: FILE Police minister Senzo Mchunu has announced the closing of the culpable homicide case concerning the late former boss of Bosasa, Gavin Watson, following an inquest by the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court three months ago. Mchunu made the announcement in a response to parliamentary questions from DA MP Glynnis Breytenbach regarding the release of autopsy reports for both Watson and the late former CEO of Steinhoff International. Watson died when the car he was driving, a company Toyota Corolla, hit a bridge pillar near the OR Tambo International Airport on August 26, 2019, near the OR Tambo International Airport while Jooste committed suicide last year in Hermanus on March 21. Mchunu said the investigation into Watson's culpable homicide case was completed after autopsy and toxicology reports were received, following a significant delay by the Department of Health. 'The post-mortem report was received on 25 April 2024. The blood/alcohol report was received on 2024/08/08 and the ballistic report was received on 16 October.' In March, Mchunu indicated in a parliamentary reply to Breytenbach that Jooste's ballistic and blood alcohol reports were still outstanding. At the time of his death, Jooste had been under investigation for his actions linked to the collapse of Steinhoff International, where he faced charges of fraud and racketeering. Jooste and former Steinhoff company secretary and head of legal, Stephanus Grobler, were told through their legal representatives on March 20, 2024, to hand themselves over to the Hawks two days later. Mchunu said at the time Jooste and his legal representatives were aware of the investigation since its inception in 2018 and that there was no evidence that he intended to flee from South Africa. When the Randburg Magistrate's Court last year issued the warrant of his arrest on March 20, the investigators had circulated the warrant of arrest on the electronic system of the Department of Home Affairs to alert all ports of entry and exit of the existence of the arrest warrant. 'This step was taken to prevent Jooste from leaving the Republic of South Africa,' Mchunu said. He also said the investigators had then informed Jooste's legal representatives that he should report to the Pretoria Central police station on March 22, 2024. 'The SAPS investigators circulated the arrest warrant timeously to prevent Jooste from leaving the Republic of South Africa.' He also said his legal representatives were advised because of their previous commitment that he would hand himself over. 'Neither the prosecutors and or the SAPS investigators could not have contemplated that Jooste would commit suicide,' he said. 'The SAPS had taken necessary measures to ensure he does not evade arrest by skipping the country. Therefore, the outcome remains unfortunate and there is no further consequence management considered to be necessary in this matter.'

Police have dismissed claims circulating on social media that kidnapped businessman Jerry Boshoga has been found dead. Police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe confirmed on Thursday the investigation into his kidnapping was still at a sensitive stage and that the businessman had not yet been found. 'We call on all social media users to stop the spread of unverified information. Social media users are also urged to spare a thought for the family of the victim. The spreading of such misleading information has caused unnecessary trauma, panic and anxiety for close family members including his mother, wife and children,' she said. Mathe said police were in close contact with the family and if there were any developments in the case, the family would be the first to be notified by the investigating team. Boshoga, from Silver Lakes, Pretoria, was kidnapped in Centurion in November last year and his kidnappers demanded a R10m ransom, sending videos to the family purporting to show him being tortured. His brother struggled to get hold of him and while trying to trace his location, his wife received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number with a voice note from Boshoga saying: 'I've been kidnapped.'
