Corona beer maker Constellation Brands misses quarterly estimates amid tariff woes

Reutersa day ago
July 1 (Reuters) - Constellation Brands (STZ.N), opens new tab missed first-quarter sales and profit estimates on Tuesday, as fears of rising tariffs and economic uncertainty prompted consumers to reduce purchases of beers and wines.
U.S. alcoholic beverage makers have faced a double blow from the Trump administration's shifting trade policies, a challenge that comes at a time when the industry is already grappling with tepid demand.
Corona beer maker reported net sales of $2.52 billion for the quarter ended May 31, compared with analysts' average estimate of $2.55 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Tariffs on beer imports, along with the inclusion of beer cans under aluminum tariffs, have impacted liquor makers such as Constellation Brands and Molson Coors (TAP.N), opens new tab.
Last month, U.S. President Trump announced plans to double tariffs on imported steel and aluminum to 50% from 25%, intensifying pressure on global steel producers and escalating the trade war.
Meanwhile, Constellation Brands has experienced a significant slowdown in beer consumption, particularly among its Hispanic consumers, following Trump's immigration crackdown.
The company's beer business, its largest revenue contributor, reported a 2.6% decline in quarterly depletion volume — the rate at which products are sold — driven by declines in brands such as Modelo Especial and Corona Extra. Its beer depletions rose 6.4% a year ago.
Sequential price increases and cost management measures were offset by higher expenses, including increased costs from aluminum tariffs and marketing expenditures.
The company's quarterly operating margins at its beer business fell 150 basis points to 39.1%.
Constellation reported comparable profit of $3.22 per share for the quarter, below estimates of $3.31.
Shares of the company, which maintained its annual enterprise organic sales and profit forecast, were marginally lower in extended trading.

UK's Wise seeks to create national trust bank in US

July 2 (Reuters) - Money transfer company Wise Plc (WISEa.L), opens new tab has applied to be directly regulated by the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to create a national trust bank in the United States, according to an official document. An OCC document dated June 16 showed Wise seeking approval to operate as a nondepository trust bank in the U.S., a move first reported by Bloomberg News on Wednesday. If the application is approved, Wise would be able to bypass intermediary banks and settle U.S. dollar payments directly with the Federal Reserve, potentially cutting costs, speeding up transfers and giving it tighter control over its largest currency flow. It will also be a step toward deeper integration into the U.S. financial system. Trust banks can offer limited financial services. Wise, which made its debut on the London market in 2021, is planning to move its primary listing to the U.S. from London. The company's U.S. hub will be in Austin, Texas, where the firm already has about 450 staff.

AOC blasts Trump's bill as ‘a deal with the devil' as she gives emotional floor speech trying to stop its passage

New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slammed President Donald Trump's domestic megabill as a 'deal with the devil' in an emotional speech on the House floor. The House of Representatives returned to business on Wednesday to take up the Senate's version of Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill.' In her speech, Ocasio-Cortez referred to one of Trump's top campaign promises included in the legislation, no taxes on tips, as a 'scam' as she referenced her own past work as a bartender. 'On this point of tax on tips, as one of the only people in this body who has lived off of tips, I want to tell you a little bit about the scam of that text, a little bit of the fine print there,' said Ocasio-Cortez, before going on to note that the provision has a limit of $25,000 per year. The legislation doesn't include the tax break for those earning more than $150,000 a year. The congresswoman argued that the bill would be 'jacking up' taxes for lower-income Americans. The legislation extends tax cuts initially passed in 2017 during Trump's first stint in the White House. 'The cap on that is $25,000 while you're jacking up taxes on people who make less than $50,000 across the United States, while taking away their SNAP, while taking away their Medicaid, while kicking them off of the ACA and their health care extensions,' she said. 'So if you're at home and you're living off tips, you do the math. Is that worth it to you? Losing all your health care, not being able to feed your babies, not being able to put a diaper on their bottom in exchange for what? This bill is a deal with the devil.' According to a poll of 800 voters in Ocasio-Cortez's home state by Siena College, New York voters believe, by a 52 to 28 percent margin, that Trump's legislation would make life worse for a majority of Americans. Meanwhile, 61 percent supported removing income taxes on tips, while 21 percent opposed the measure. Empire State voters also backed requiring healthy adult Medicaid recipients to work to get benefits by a margin of 48 to 32 percent. They are also strongly opposed to cutting corporate taxes and cutting SNAP benefits for the poor. Ocasio-Cortez told members of the GOP on Wednesday that they should be 'ashamed.' 'It explodes our national debt. It militarizes our entire economy and it strips away healthcare and basic dignity of the American people — for what?' she added. 'To give Elon Musk a tax break and billionaires the greedy taking of our nation. We cannot stand for it, and we will not support it. You should be ashamed.'
