Boca edge Lanus on penalties to reach Apertura quarter-finals amid fan unrest
Boca goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin, who was pivotal in preserving the deadlock during the match, gave Boca an early advantage in the shootout by saving Alexis Canelo's opening kick.
Lanus winger Dylan Aquino then blazed a shot over the bar while Boca held their nerve, converting their first three penalties with confidence.

'We definitely need to improve, but we achieved what we wanted to achieve, which was to get through the round. From here, we now have to work to improve,' interim Boca coach Mariano Herron, who replaced sacked coach Fernando Gago last month, told reporters.
'We understand the fans' anger. We need to work to improve, but it's understandable that they weren't satisfied.'
On the pitch, the match itself was low on quality, with neither side managing to assert dominance or create significant scoring opportunities.
Lanus had the best chance of the first half, with Ramiro Carrera's powerful long-range effort just before halftime, but Marchesin was on hand to make a crucial save.

Platense pulled off a major upset by claiming a late 1-0 win at Racing Club.

Photo: AFP Amateur side Auckland City earned the greatest result in the team's history with a 1-1 draw against Boca Juniors at the Club World Cup on Tuesday. The already-eliminated New Zealanders fought off the Argentine powerhouses, who entered the game with hopes of advancing if they won, although as Benfica beat Bayern Munich in the other Group C match, Boca would also have been ousted anyway. Auckland goalkeeper Nathan Garrow's own goal sent Boca ahead but Christian Gray equalised with a header in the second half to earn his team a remarkable point. After a weather delay, Boca kept pushing and racked up 40 shots but could not find a way past Garrow, who made up for his first half misfortune with several good saves. Auckland, who were crushed 10-0 by German giants Bayern in their first game and 6-0 by Benfica in the second, set up to defend with five at the back and it paid off. "It's been a tough trip, we've had some tough results but I'm just happy for the team and the boys, I think we deserve it, we got a little bit of respect back I hope," Auckland goalscorer Gray told DAZN. Auckland, the only amateur side in the competition, scored their first goal of the tournament to level after 52 minutes. Defender Gray shook off his marker and headed home from Jerson Lagos' corner.

Boca Juniors defender Costa denied US visa, misses Club World Cup
Boca Juniors defender Ayrton Costa will miss the Club World Cup after being denied a visa to enter the United States due to a criminal complaint against him in his native Argentina, the club confirmed on Thursday. River Plate ease into Argentine quarters
River Plate secured their place in the quarter-finals of the Argentine Apertura tournament on Monday with a 3-0 home win over Barracas Central at the Mas Monumental stadium. Paulo Diaz gave River an early advantage when he fired home from close range in the 12th minute and they doubled their lead two minutes before the break when Franco Mastantuono set up Ignacio Fernandez to score. Fernandez said he was glad to be back in the side. "I was back as a starter, and I took it in stride, eager to keep improving," told TNT. "No one likes to be out, but when it's my turn, I try to do my part and make the most of the moment. "We know that sometimes it's your turn and sometimes it's not but you have to stick with it and support the team because, at the end of the day, if one person does well everyone does well," he added. Marcelo Gallardo's side continued to dominate after the break and thought they had scored the third when Mastantuono set up Fabricio Bustos following a swift counter-attack. However, the goal was disallowed following a VAR review due to a foul by Kevin Castano on Barracas midfielder Dardo Miloc. "I think Kevin got the ball back well and Miloc let himself fall, lost the ball and stayed there protesting," River midfielder Enzo Perez said. "The referee made the decision and I told him it was a clean challenge and that we got the ball back, but these are quick decisions and there's nothing you can do about it."
