Time of India7 days ago
Two
student pilots
were killed after their planes collided mid-air near the
Steinbach South Airport
, about 60 kilometers (40 miles) south of Winnipeg.
The crash occurred at approximately 8:45 am in the rural municipality of Hanover. Both pilots, a man and a woman, were flying single-engine aircraft when their planes collided during a
training exercise
, according to the
Royal Canadian Mounted Police
(RCMP). Neither had passengers on board.
RCMP said both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not been released, and authorities are working to notify their families. The aircraft involved were a
Cessna 152
and a
Cessna 172
, both operated by Harv's Air, a Manitoba-based flight training school with locations in Steinbach and St. Andrews.

Adam Penner, president of Harv's Air, confirmed the victims were students at the school. The woman was training for her private pilot license, and the man already held one and was preparing for commercial certification. Both were flying solo at the time as part of routine takeoff and landing practice.
'I'm devastated,' Penner said. 'But I'm not sure I can say anything more than that until their families have been notified.'
Live Events
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has deployed a team of investigators to determine the cause of the crash. The agency, which investigates air and other transportation incidents in Canada, will analyze flight data and communication logs as part of the probe.
'This is still evolving,' RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Melanie Roussel said at a press conference. 'It's a two-plane collision, which is not something that happens every day.'
Witnesses near the site reported hearing a loud bang followed by a plume of black smoke. Flight operations at Harv's Air have been temporarily suspended, and counsellors have been brought in for staff and students.
The investigation will focus on communications, flight paths, and whether protocols were properly followed. Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland offered condolences via
social media
and said a minister's observer will monitor the investigation.

TN girl aces UPSC, set to join naval academy

Chennai: Pointing to a fully knit, framed crochet of an old-fashioned ship cutting through the sea with the wind in its sails, Harini Raghavendran says, "I made this 4 years ago as a random pastime. Little did I know that four years later, I'd be sailing through similar-looking seas as a naval officer." The 18-year-old daughter of IT professionals is the first girl from Tamil Nadu to join the Indian Naval Academy (INA) in Ezhimala, Kerala, after clearing the NDA/NA exam, which involves clearing the UPSC after Class XII, through the permanent commission entry. She will train at INA as a naval cadet for four years starting July 14, after which she will receive a BTech degree. Women were allowed as cadets in the defence services after Class XII only after a 2021 Supreme Court order. The first batch joined National Defence Academy in Pune in 2022, and 17 women graduated in May 2025, with most of them from Haryana and UP. There were only a few in the Navy, and none was from TN. Harini recalls the medical screening as the most nerve-wracking. "There's not a single part of your body that goes unscanned. I've heard of candidates discovering undiagnosed ailments during the process." Her love for the waters and physical activity, she says, began at a young age. "I took my first swimming lesson at five," she says. Over the next decade, she trained in athletics and basketball, and eventually led her school team to multiple victories. Her father Raghavendran Venkataramana has been a major influence on her. "I started accompanying him on adventure trips from the age of 15," says Harini. Her mother Ramya R, recalls relocating homes to be closer to Harini's basketball coaching centre and enrolling her in summer camps to help her become comfortable staying away from home. "Compared to states like Haryana and Rajasthan, awareness and exposure to careers in defence is quite low in TN," said Major Madhan Kumar, one of Harini's mentors. Recalling her recent experience as a guest speaker at Sainik School, Amaravathinagar, she says "It felt like a personal milestone, to inspire others through my journey."

Collectorate Twin Towers Project Reshaped To Save 147-Year-Old Trees

Nagpur: In an encouraging move toward environmental sustainability, the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) redesigned parts of the District Collectorate twin towers project to preserve century-old heritage trees, some over 147-years-old, on the construction site. MSIDC managing director Brijesh Dixit said that 42 trees originally stood within the project's footprint, including trees aged 147, 115, and 112 years. Rather than cutting them down, engineers changed the building design and applied advanced techniques to safeguard these natural assets. A 'tree peat' method was used, allowing the roots to be protected without disturbance. Additionally, geo-textile materials were laid up to 20 feet deep around the roots to ensure their safety during excavation and construction activities. These combined efforts successfully saved six mature trees, which were initially at risk. While authorities already granted permission to fell 36 trees, MSIDC took additional steps to protect as many as possible. "These trees are not merely part of the landscape but represent the living heritage of the city. Our team worked diligently to incorporate environmental care into this massive infrastructure project," Dixit said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Forget Furosemide, Use This Household Item To Help Drain Edema Fluid WellnessGuide Learn more Undo In parallel, MSIDC planted 1,735 new trees at various locations across Nagpur as part of compensatory afforestation. Dixit added that clear guidelines have been issued to project teams to prioritise tree conservation throughout the construction period. The twin towers project is envisioned as a green building initiative, featuring extensive use of solar energy, energy-efficient design, and sustainable construction materials. Set to rise on a 30,471-square-metre plot, the 12-floor building will house two auditoriums with capacities of 500 and 300 seats, respectively, along with parking for 450 four-wheelers and 1,200 two-wheelers. As reported by TOI earlier, the project received a funding boost of Rs50 crore and Rs27 crore in two phases and is set to receive more as and when required. The total budget is Rs271 crore. The demolition of older structures, including the tehsildar building, was completed recently to clear space for the new towers. The heritage collectorate building will remain untouched and repurposed. Completion is expected by December 2027. Officials confirmed that demolition work is now fully finished, digging and foundation activities are almost complete, and construction has commenced. They also assured that sufficient funds are available to maintain steady progress and avoid delays. By successfully blending heritage tree preservation with modern infrastructure development, the MSIDC is setting an example for environmentally conscious urban projects.
