Clayton Kershaw passes 3,000 strikeouts: Dodgers beat White Sox with late comeback

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (22) tips his cap after recording his 3,000th career strike out by striking out Chicago White Sox's Vinny Capra during the sixth inning of a baseball game in Los Angeles. (AP Photo/Kevork Djansezian) Clayton Kershaw needed three punch-outs on Wednesday night. He got them and entered baseball's most exclusive club. The 37-year-old sat down Chicago infielder Vinny Capra in the sixth inning, recording career strikeout number 3,000 and becoming only the twentieth pitcher, and the fourth left-hander, to reach that mark. Kershaw did it on his 100th pitch of the game, a tight slider that froze Capra. The Dodger Stadium crowd rose, teammates hugged him on the grass, and Kershaw tipped his cap before walking off to a standing ovation. The milestone is rare for another reason. Kershaw is just the third pitcher to strike out 3,000 hitters while spending his entire career with one team, joining Walter Johnson and Bob Gibson. According to Elias Sports Bureau numbers, he reached the mark in 2,787 ⅓ innings, the fourth-fastest pace in Major League history. Game turned in the ninth Los Angeles still trailed 4-2 when Kershaw left. The bats rescued the night with a three-run surge in the ninth. Shohei Ohtani's grounder tied the game, and Freddie Freeman drilled a single to right to score the winner. Final score: Dodgers 5, White Sox 4. What the milestone means Kershaw already owns three Cy Young Awards, an MVP trophy and a World Series ring. The 3,000-strikeout line fills one of the few blank spaces on his résumé. His next targets are 200 wins—he sits at 208—and a fourth trip to October glory. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 11 pensioenblunders om te overwegen wanneer u stopt met werken Fisher Investments Nederland Meer informatie Undo Manager Dave Roberts said he plans to keep Kershaw on a cautious workload as the Dodgers chase another division title.
