CM doubles Kissan Card loan limit

Express Tribune15-05-2025
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has increased the limit of loan through Kissan Card to Rs300,000 from Rs150,000 and announced a subsidy of up to 95 per cent on the solarisation of agricultural tube wells.
Addressing a ceremony at the Kala Shah Kaku Rice Research Institute, she also announced the launching of an SMS and helpline system for farmers who do not possess the card.
She announced that green tractors would be provided at subsidy to 20,000 farmers next year along with the establishment of agricultural machinery rental centres in every tehsil.
The chief minister also congratulated the farmers on the success of Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos and commended the performance of all government institutions.
She added, "The reduction of inflation from 40% to almost zero is no less than a miracle. During my visit to Lahore, a woman congratulated me on the reduction in vegetable prices. Onions, which used to sell at Rs300 per kg in Punjab, are now available at Rs50." She said reduction in the flour and bread prices had benefited the people.
The chief minister said, "Those who tried to create a fissure between the farmers and the government failed miserably. The farmers of Punjab are benefiting from the historic package. The farmers did not listen to the baseless propaganda and grew wheat on my appeal. I assured the farmers to grow wheat without fear and the government would not allow any loss accruing to them."
She added, "Instead of support price of wheat, direct subsidy is being given to the farmers. I want to put all the resources at the disposal of our farmers, but some tough decisions need to be made to create a balance in the economy. A support worth Rs5,000 per acre is being given to the wheat farmers. The Punjab government is striving the utmost to reduce the cost of seed, manure, pesticides, electricity bills of tube wells and diesel."
She said 85% of the loans acquired through the Kissan Card had been repaid.
She maintained, "Earlier, green tractors were available during the tenure of Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and now, when the government of Nawaz Sharif came to power once again, green tractors are being given to the farmers."
The CM said the growers were getting abundant fertilisers at reasonable prices.
She outlined, "Due to early sowing, cotton crop will increase by 30 to 40% and its production will be six million bales this year. The farmers do not be misled by anyone as the government will lend them complete support and will also redress their difficulties and grievances. The coming year will bring more improvement and prosperity."
The chief minister launched the scheme for wheat farmers by giving tractors and cash grant in the ceremony. She also inspected latest Chinese tractors on the occasion.

UN says Taliban committing 'rights violations' against Afghan returnees

An Iranian bus drops off Afghan refugees at Zero Point on the Islam Qala border in Herat Province on July 24, 2025. (AFP) Listen to article United Nations said Thursday that Taliban authorities were committing human rights violations, including torture and arbitrary detention, against Afghans forced to return by Iran and Pakistan. Large-scale deportation campaigns have led to the return of millions of Afghans to Afghanistan, with over 1.9 million people returning so far in 2025 from Pakistan and Iran — the vast majority from Iran. "People returning to the country who were at particular risk of reprisals and other human rights violations by the de facto (Taliban) authorities were women and girls, individuals affiliated with the former government and its security forces, media workers and civil society," the UN said in a statement accompanying the release of the report. "These violations have included torture and ill-treatment, arbitrary arrest and detention, and threats to personal security." UN refugee agency (UNHCR) recently estimated that up to three million people could return to Afghanistan in 2025, a country facing a severe humanitarian crisis. The report by the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan and the UN Human Rights Office was based on interviews with 49 returned Afghans. The Taliban government has previously denied allegations of abuse, having declared an amnesty against those who worked for NATO forces and the former government during their two-decade conflict against the Taliban's insurgency. "Nobody should be sent back to a country where they face risk of persecution on account of their identity or personal history," UN rights chief Volker Turk said in a statement earlier this month. "In Afghanistan, this is even more pronounced for women and girls, who are subjected to a range of measures that amount to persecution on the basis of their gender alone," he added.

Employees continue protest against USC shutdown

ISLAMABAD: Employees of the Utility Stores Corporation of Pakistan (USC) continued their protest on Wednesday against the shutting down of Utility Stores by the federal government across the country. Organised under the Joint Action Committee of USC, hundreds of workers staged a sit-in outside the USC headquarters in Islamabad, demanding an immediate reversal of the closure decision. Protesters chanted slogans against the government and vowed to continue their demonstration until their demands are met. The demonstrators warned that closing down Utility Stores would worsen inflation and push thousands of workers into unemployment. 'Shutting down Utility Stores would be like handing over 260 million citizens to the mafias of inflation,' one protester said. They also alleged that the government's move violates national labour and privatisation laws. Due to the protest and heightened security measures, heavy traffic congestion was witnessed on roads leading to the Red Zone, particularly around the Parliament House, as authorities braced to avert possible movement of protesters towards the Red Zone. Addressing the rally, senior Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader Chaudhry Manzoor Hussain strongly criticised the government's privatisation policy. He said they are not just selling off Utility Stores; they are selling institutions such as Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation Ltd (Passco) as well. 'Tell me, is there any institution they do not want to sell?' He reminded the crowd that Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had established the USC to eliminate profiteering and provide affordable daily essentials to the public under one roof. Manzoor rejected the government's justification that Utility Stores are being shut down due to financial losses. He responded to official claims that Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) now fulfills the need: 'BISP does not support those earning Rs25,000 to Rs30,000 monthly. Where will they go?' He also criticised the government's failure to implement its own minimum wage policy, claiming that the motive behind the closures is not reform but corruption and profiteering. 'They want to loot the system, and we will not let them do it,' he added. Addressing public concerns over PPP's role in the federal government, Manzoor clarified: 'We are not part of the government. Being part of the government means having the prime minister or your ministers in the cabinet. We only support the government's good actions — we are not part of their corruption.'
