Details: How Barcelona learned of Nico Williams' decision to stay at Athletic Club
Details: How Barcelona learned of Nico Williams' decision to stay at Athletic Club An insight into the bizarre way in which Barcelona learned of the decision of chief transfer target Nico Williams to reject the club has been forthcoming. All associated with Barcelona, of course, find themselves reeling on Friday. Advertisement This comes after what looked set to be the Blaugrana's marquee summer signing fell through almost out of the blue. Just weeks on from agreeing on the terms of a contract to take his talents to the Camp Nou, the aforementioned Nico Williams pulled the rug out from underneath Deco and co. This came by way of his commitment to a new long-term contract with Athletic Club. And safe to say, news of as much came as nothing short of a shock to those in the boardroom at Barcelona. As per Jose Alvarez of El Chiringuito TV, the La Liga champions – still of the belief that Nico was likely to arrive – learned of his Athletic renewal through the Basques' social media announcement. 3 players reportedly on Barcelona's radar after Nico Williams' transfer collapse
Barcelona fans were gutted when the highly anticipated transfer of Athletic Bilbao's star winger Nico Williams fell apart. The 22-year-old Spaniard, a top target for the Blaugrana, shocked everyone by signing a new deal with Athletic Club until 2035. With the transfer window buzzing, Barcelona has quickly turned its attention to other talents to bolster their squad. Here are three exciting players reportedly on their radar to fill the gap left by the Nico Williams saga. 1. Luis Díaz – Liverpool First up is Liverpool's Luis Díaz, a 28-year-old Colombian who's been lighting up the Premier League with his lightning-fast pace and jaw-dropping dribbling. Whether he's cutting in from the left or leaving defenders in the dust, Díaz's flair makes him a perfect match for Hansi Flick's high-octane, pressing style at Barcelona. Word is, Deco, Barcelona's sporting director, has been a huge fan of Díaz for ages. But snagging him won't be easy—Liverpool sees him as a cornerstone of their squad, and his price tag could soar past €70 million. For a club like Barcelona, still wrestling with financial tightropes, that's no small feat. Still, Díaz's ability to turn games on their head has fans dreaming of him in the iconic Blaugrana kit. 2. Marcus Rashford – Manchester United Next on the list is Manchester United's Marcus Rashford, a 27-year-old forward whose speed and versatility could shake things up at the Camp Nou. Rashford's had his share of ups and downs at United, but there's no denying his talent—when he's on, he's unstoppable. A move to Barcelona could be just the spark he needs to rediscover his magic. Deco's been keeping tabs on Rashford for a while, and recent chatter suggests Barcelona might explore a deal, possibly starting with a loan to navigate La Liga's pesky 1:1 financial rules. Imagine Rashford linking up with the likes of Lamine Yamal and Pedri—talk about a mouthwatering prospect! 3. Denzel Dumfries – Inter Milan In a bit of a curveball, Barcelona's also got their eyes on Inter Milan's Denzel Dumfries. The 28-year-old Dutchman isn't your typical winger, but his relentless runs down the right and attacking instincts could add a whole new dimension to Flick's system. Think of him as a turbo-charged full-back who can stretch defenses and chip in with goals or assists. Dumfries' contract with Inter runs until 2026, but with talks stalling, Barcelona might swoop in for a bargain compared to Williams' eye-watering €95-100 million release clause. His physicality and experience, both in Serie A and with the Netherlands, make him a unique option to complement Barcelona's young stars. Euro 2025: Long VAR review of 4-plus minutes decides no penalty for Denmark against Sweden
GENEVA (AP) — A video review of more than four minutes was needed to decide Denmark should not be awarded a penalty against Sweden early in their Women's European Championship game on Friday. Brazilian referee Edina Alves was whistled and jeered by fans during the long delay. She studied the incident on a fieldside monitor before deciding to award a free kick to Sweden instead. Play eventually resumed in the 11th minute, fully five minutes after the incident in question in the Sweden penalty area. A free kick awarded for a foul against Denmark captain Pernille Harder was lofted toward the star forward who tangled with the falling Sweden winger Madelen Janogy. Harder was unable to control the ball which ran to safety toward Sweden goalkeeper Jennifer Falk. Replays of the incident eventually showed Janogy had herself been tripped by a Denmark opponent on the edge of the penalty area as she ran back to defend the cross. Alves was invited to referee at Euro 2025 as part of an exchange program between European soccer body UEFA and South America's CONMEBOL. After seven minutes of stoppage time at the end of the half, Janogy and Alves stood and spoke together. The two seemed to be explaining their actions and shook hands before leaving the field with the score still 0-0. ___ AP soccer:
