Mel B celebrates wedding for second time with ‘spiritual ceremony' in Morocco

Telegraph2 days ago
Mel B has celebrated her marriage for a second time with a 'spiritual' ceremony in Morocco.
The 50-year-old former Spice Girl, whose real name is Melanie Brown, married Rory McPhee, a hairdresser, at St Paul's Cathedral last month, having announced her engagement to him in October 2022.
In a post on Instagram, Brown, who has been married twice before, said: 'We got married, again!
'A wedding so good we keep the celebration going with our closest and dearest in our fave place we had the time of our lives.'
For the ceremony at the Selman Hotel in Marrakech on Saturday, the singer wore a red dress with crystals and bugle beads made in a collaboration between Evelie Bridal and wedding dress designer Justin Alexander.
Her choice of dress was guided by Caroline Black from London-based Evelie, who said she aimed to reflect her life in the US, where she is a judge on America's Got Talent.
Ms Black said: 'For Mel's Morocco wedding dress, we focused on trying Justin Alexander gowns with a little extra sparkle.
'Mel loved the idea of a red dress – something bold, with lots and lots of shimmer – but it also had to feel light and easy to move in.
'We drew inspiration from a variety of dresses she tried on at Evelie South Kensington, then went back and forth brainstorming with Justin Alexander and his design team.
'After several conversations and sketches, the first design took shape. Mel gave us clear feedback on what she liked and what she didn't, and the final result was beautiful.
'Mel had such a strong sense of what she wanted – it was a joy working with her and Justin Alexander to bring her vision to life.'
The dress required a team of six artisans and took more than 850 hours to complete.
Mr McPhee, 37, wore an Alexander McQueen outfit featuring a white shirt and jacket with black trousers and shoes.
The London wedding on July 5 was attended by guests including Spice Girls bandmate Emma Bunton, model Daisy Lowe, and comedians Tom Allen and Katherine Ryan.
The singer has been married twice before, firstly to Jimmy Gulzar, a backing dancer, with whom she had a daughter, Phoenix Chi. Her second marriage to Stephen Belafonte, with whom she shares daughter Madison Brown, ended when she filed for divorce in 2017 following allegations of abuse.
Brown has another child, Angel Iris Murphy Brown, from a brief relationship with Eddie Murphy, the actor and comedian.

‘Upset' Queen's cutting remark about Meghan & Harry's wedding ‘revealed' – and what she REALLY thought about guest list

THE late Queen was "upset"' at Meghan Markle's plans for her and Harry's wedding at Windsor Castle, a close friend of her cousin has claimed. Queen Elizabeth II is said to have been unhappy with the couple's guest list for the event and the pair inviting "random" celebrities instead of family members. 5 Sally Bedell Smith, a royal biographer, said the queen was left exasperated by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's plans. The late Queen reportedly said: "But it's my house - and I'm paying for it" when confronted with the plans for the Windsor Castle event. She was also said to have been "annoyed" when the pair went directly to the Archbishop of Canterbury to ask him to marry them in St George's Chapel in May 2018. Harry's grandmother was more excited about Princess Eugenie's wedding in October that year, according to the Daily Mail. Ms Bedell Smith claims that Meghan then announced her pregnancy on the same day and then went on to say that the timing of the announcement had been "rude." She spoke at length with the late Queen's cousin, Lady Elizabeth Anson, who in turn spoke with the late Queen towards the end of her life. Lady Anson was born in Windsor Castle and was a great-niece of the Queen Mother and a goddaughter of King George VI. She was a party planner and was known as Liza to close friends and family. Bedall Smith claimed in a new podcast that the late queen was upset about her lack of involvement in the Sussex's wedding planning. Harry and Meghan made the Queen's last years a complete misery - they'll NEVER be forgiven Lady Anson made an attempt to console her by telling her she could look forward to the Royal Ascot and Princess Eugenie's wedding. Despite her first cousin's best efforts her majesty remained upset. The Royal Family paid for the Sussex's wedding, covering the cost of the service, music, flowers and reception. There were 600 guests invited to a lunchtime reception at St George's Hall which was hosted by the Queen. The reception was then followed by an evening bash for 200 VIPs at Frogmore House, hosted by Harry's father. 5 5 5 Claims were made today however that Harry and Meghan had invited people who barely knew the Royal Family. Sally Bedell Smith told American royal commentator Kinsey Schofield: "Harry and Meghan just disinvited or didn't invite a whole group of family and cousins. "The children of the Prince and Princess Michael of Kent and of the Gloucesters. "She [Meghan] and Harry just 'exed' them out of the guest list and they added all these other random people who barely even knew the Royal Family. "That was just yet another irritation for the Queen." Ms Bedell Smith revealed earlier this year what the late Queen's real thoughts on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and their behaviour were. She said that as the wedding approached the queen began to feel "very worried" privately. According to Bedell Smith concerns were raised that Harry was 'Besotted and weak about women." Lady Anson reportedly told Bedell Smith about Meghan: "We hope but don't quite think she is in love. We think she engineered it all.' The Sussex's married in May 2018 and Meghan threw herself into royal duties before falling pregnant. Sally Bedell Smith wrote on her Substack: "By late February 2019 when Lady Anson and I spoke on the phone, she said ' I don't trust Meghan an inch. To begin with, she was not bad—a straightforward starlet, used to public speaking and charity work. The wedge between the brothers is really too bad.'" Lady Anson, who worked as a party planner for elites celebrities and royals, tragically passed away in 2020. The queen made her a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order for her outstanding personal service to a British monarch.

Mel B and the story behind her ‘sequel wedding' dress

For her second trip down the aisle, however, Brown chose a gown that was more 'club' than 'cathedral'. Designed by US-based designer Justin Alexander, her sheer, fit-and-flare gown was hand beaded with red crystals and bugle beads to create a 'floating' effect, a task that took six artisans over 850 hours to complete. While the gown's plunging sweetheart neckline and daring side slit would have raised eyebrows at St Paul's, there were no such sensitivities in Marrakech, allowing the ebullient, body-positive style that is Brown's trademark to reach its fullest expression. A lace-up corset and a cascading godet completed the look, the latter flowing into a dramatic, cathedral-length train, despite there being nary a cathedral in sight. If the singer's first gown reflected her British roots, her second captured her time in America, where she lived for 15 years between 2004 and 2019, and is currently continuing her stint as a judge on America's Got Talent. 'Mel loved the idea of a red dress – something bold, with lots and lots of shimmer, that also felt light and easy to move in,' says Caroline Black, owner of bridal boutique Evelie, in South Kensington, London. 'She had such a strong sense of what she wanted.' What she really, really wanted, one imagines, was the blessing of her four former bandmates. Despite telling Hello magazine in 2022 that the other Spice Girls 'like Rory so much… they've never liked any of my boyfriends and they've been quite clear about that,' only Emma Bunton attended the couple's July nuptials at St Paul's Cathedral, with Victoria Beckham, Melanie Chisholm and Geri Horner remaining absent due to travel and work commitments. Nor did they attend a subsequent £28,000 party at Shangri-La in The Shard. While photographic evidence is yet to surface, Brown's Instagram account seems to confirm that Mel C, at least, was on hand to witness the sequel. 'What a weekend! So happy we got to share it with you,' Chisholm posted, underneath a photo of the happy pair, in which the groom wore a cropped white jacket and black trousers by Alexander McQueen. While their Moroccan nuptials may have been a sequel, Mel B fans will be fervently hoping that this is the final instalment. The singer's first marriage, to Dutch backing dancer Jimmy Gulzar in 1998, lasted 16 months, while her second marriage, to businessman Stephen Belafonte in 2007, ended in acrimony in 2017, with Brown accusing Belafonte of emotional and physical abuse. In 2018, she became a patron for Women's Aid, the charity that helps survivors of domestic violence. She received an MBE in 2022 for her services to charitable causes. With an estimated net worth of £4.7 million, a costly divorce has left Brown as the least wealthy of the Spice Girls. Sizeable as her fortune may be, it's fairly modest for a woman who comprised one fifth of the best-selling girl group of all time. Since bursting onto the music scene in 1996 with their hit single Wannabe, the group has sold over 100 million records worldwide. And while rumours of a Spice Girls reunion may be unfounded, let's hope Mel B continues to make sweet music with her latest husband, at least.
