On this day: organist on Interstellar soundtrack to perform at Minster

Yahoo10-04-2025
On this day in 2024, the York Press reported that the organist on Hans Zimmer's soundtrack for the movie Interstellar was set to perform at York Minster.
This was part of a series of organ concertos to be hosted by the Minster on Thursday evenings during July and August of 2024.
The recitals were to feature well-known classic compositions as well as contemporary pieces.
The series, which was to open with a performance from the Queen's Medal for Music recipient Thomas Trotter, was to feature a variety of iconic musicians for six nights of organ music.
To mark the 10th anniversary of Interstellar's release, featured organist Roger Sayer was to conclude the series at the Minster.
While working as director of music at Temple Church London, Mr Sayer was selected by Zimmer to create the prominent organ role on the film's soundtrack.
One listener said of Mr Sayer's work on the film: "If Hans Zimmer is the heart of Interstellar, then you, sir, are its soul."
At the Minster, he planned to share his experience working on the iconic soundtrack before playing his own version for listeners.
He then planned to perform other space-related music, including movements from Holst's The Planets.

How to Cope When Your Fave (Like Lola Tung or Simone Ashley) Gets Cut From a Blockbuster

I almost fell to my knees when I read that Bridgerton star Simone Ashley had her role cut from the hit summer film F1. It didn't deter her from turning out a look at its premiere, but the news was met with fan confusion and ire. Why would cutting Simone even be considered? She's an up-and-coming starlet with a passionate fan base eager to support her every move! But as F1 director Joseph Kosinski explained to People, "It happens on every film, where you have to shoot more than you can use. There were two or three storylines that ultimately didn't make it into the final cut." Joseph did not lie. This incident is not an isolated one. That's become even more obvious with the news that Monsters breakout actor Nicholas Alexander Chavez and The Summer I Turned Pretty star Lola Tung had their sole scene in the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer remake cut. Fans clocked that Nicholas and Lola weren't featured in the film's trailer or any other promotional materials earlier this summer, but their chop was confirmed by director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson at the premiere this week. She said plainly that their scene just didn't fit in with the final version of the movie. 'It was just one of those situations where it had nothing to do with Lola and Nicholas,' director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson explained, 'they are both so fantastic.' And so we have found a pretty dismaying summer 2025 trend: Young, popular, streamer-bred talent having their highly anticipated big-screen moments slashed! These are the talents we root for! Whose casting announcements are met with such fervent stan celebration that you'd assume some of the users online are taking home a cut of the actors' paychecks. The directors who commit to their creative vision instead of succumbing to the pressures of fanfare have my respect. But respect won't satisfy the curiosity I have about Nicholas Alexander Chavez's IKWYDLS performance. Disheartening as it may be, there's a history for this sort of thing. A young Timothée Chalamet famously had his role in Interstellar cut significantly back in 2014. Shailene Woodley's portrayal of Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 never saw the light of day. And we can learn from this history. So, to settle your worries about the widespread star slashing happening right now, here's a beginner's guide to surviving it. Tempting as it may be, let's not completely rule these films out just because they cut your fave. There are plenty of exciting names to watch these major projects for. For example, I Know What You Did Last Summer's cast features the cream of young Hollywood's crop—from Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline, to The Studio's scene stealer Chase Sui Wonders. Expand your horizons! Consider alternative stanning options! Support your local theaters! Think back to the day you first saw the IG story/press release/@FilmUpdates tweet that announced your fave's casting. Do you remember how hopeful you felt? The adorable press junket moments and red carpet looks you started to look forward to? That sweet sense of endless opportunity? Hold on to that feeling. Maybe revisit the projects that they haven't been brutally cut from. Pain isn't a forever feeling! I'm talking about the grainy paparazzi photos from the set. Or the blink-and-you-miss-it appearance in the film that was impossible to edit around. Maybe even pray that their scenes mysteriously leak on the internet one day. And consider watching the film extra closely. You can still catch a glimpse of Shailene Woodley during one climactic scene in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and try as the powers that be might, Simone Ashley's contributions to F1 couldn't be totally erased. (She can technically still be spotted in the movie, very briefly.) While you hold on to those aforementioned scraps, remember that many victims of The Movie Cut have gone on to do great things! Ex. the upcoming third season of The Summer I Turned Pretty, which I will be streaming to fill the Lola Tung-sized hole in my heart. These stars were cast for a reason—their talent, aura, and potentially their follower counts. Which means that in a dream world, there will be plenty more high-profile opportunities to come. And though I'm sure the fan outrage and advocacy are appreciated, please note that this is exactly what their agents are paid to do. There's (hopefully) more screentime in the days ahead.

One year from 'The Odyssey': What we know so far about Christopher Nolan's next movie

With the release one year from this Thursday, July 17, here's what we know so far about Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey." The journey begins next year. Christopher Nolan's upcoming film "The Odyssey," an adaption of Homer's epic poem, is currently in production with a release date set for summer 2026. Just how Nolan plans to adapt the classic piece of literature is yet to be seen, but Universal Pictures, in a December 2024 post on X, described the film as "a mythic action epic shot across the world," adding it would use "brand new IMAX film technology" to bring Homer's saga to IMAX screens for the first time. The film is touted to be the first movie to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras. Nolan is writing and producing the film with longtime colleague and life partner Emma Thomas, who won the Best Picture Oscar for 'Oppenheimer' alongside Nolan. Thomas has served as producer on Nolan's movies going back to "Following." She and Nolan have been married since 1997 and share four children. A new teaser poster for the film dropped online July 2 with the tagline "Defy the gods." "The Odyssey" is scheduled to hit theatres on July 17, 2026, according to Universal Pictures. 'The Odyssey' cast: Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, more As with most Nolan projects, cast details of the "The Odyssey" have been strictly guarded, with only Matt Damon officially announced to play Odysseus, king of Ithaca, in the film. The film would be Damon's third collaboration with Nolan after "Oppenheimer" and "Interstellar." However, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Jon Bernthal, Charlize Theron, Mia Goth, John Leguizamo and Shiloh Fernandez are also expected to be a part of the cast, according to multiple reports, including Variety and Deadline. Holland, in an October 2024 appearance on "Good Morning America" had confirmed his casting in the film, though he stayed away from divulging further details. 'All I can say is that I'm incredibly excited,' Holland had said on the show. 'And, obviously honored, but that's all I can say because, to be honest, that's all I know.' The "Spiderman" actor is expected to play Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, as per reports in Variety and the New York Times. In a July 11 interview with GQ, Holland said his experience on "The Odyssey's" set was "amazing." "The job of a lifetime, without a doubt," Holland said. "The best experience I've had on the film set. Incredible. It was exciting. It was different. And I think the movie is going to be unlike anything we've ever seen." Holland added he was delighted to have gotten the chance to work and share scenes with Damon and Hathaway, both of whom have been his heroes. "To share scenes with them, to learn from them, to become friends with them, I couldn't have asked for a better job," Holland told the magazine. "And I'm so proud of the work I've done. I came to work every day with a real sense of purpose and a point to prove, and I'm so grateful for Chris to have given me that opportunity." 'The Odyssey' production Filming for the "The Odyssey" is reportedly underway at different locations across the world with Nolan, Damon and other cast members spotted in several countries including Morocco, Scotland and Greece. BBC News reported Damon and Holland were spotted July 14 in Burghead on Scotland's Moray Firth coast. Other filming locations include the island of Favignana off the western coast of Sicily, Italy, as well as sites in the United Kingdom and Morocco, according to Variety. Need a break? 'The Odyssey' teaser The first look of "The Odyssey" was released exclusively in theaters in July, the New York Times and Variety reported, playing ahead of "Jurassic World Rebirth," which is also produced by Universal Pictures. According to reports, the 70-second trailer opens with shots of the sea and a narration about Odysseus' victory in the Trojan War. 'Darkness. Zeus' laws smashed to pieces. A kingdom without a king since my master died,' the voice, assumed to be Robert Pattinson's says, according to Variety. 'He knew it was an unwinnable war, and then somehow … somehow, he won it.' Viewers then see Holland's Telemachus, who tells Jon Bernthal, whose character details haven't been revealed, that he has "to find out what happened to my father." The teaser then fast forwards to "one year later," where it is revealed Damon's Odysseus is stranded in the ocean, reports said. While footage from the trailer quickly leaked online, appearing on X and TikTok, it was swiftly taken down, the reports said. What is Homer's 'Odyssey' about? 'The Odyssey' is a 24-book epic by Homer that tells the arduous 10-year journey story of Greek hero Odysseus, king of Ithaca, as he travels home after the Trojan War, according to Britannica. Odysseus' journey is long and harsh and full of challenges and encounters with the gods, polyphemuses (a type of one-eyed giant in Greek mythology), the Sirens (a half bird and half woman type creature who lured sailors to destruction) and the witch-goddess Circe. Odysseus' journey culminates in a reunion with his wife Penelope and son Telemachus, who battle aggressive suitors looking to grab the throne while he is away. Historians and scholars date 'The Odyssey' to the 8th century sometime between 725–675 BC. According to Britannica, the poem was "intended for oral performance" and the first printed Greek version was produced in 1488 in Florence. Saman Shafiq is a trending news reporter for USA TODAY. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. What follows is a race to determine who's who, who's a potential other, and what their other selves' true motives are. What's more, how do they get back to normal and to their "normal" world? This mind-bending cult favorite will keep you guessing until the very end. Watch "Coherence" on Prime Video now In a future where Earth is slowly becoming uninhabitable, former NASA pilot Joseph Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) is recruited for a last-ditch mission. His job is to travel through a wormhole in search of a new home for mankind. No pressure, right? What begins as a seemingly benign spacefaring journey quickly becomes something deeper as Cooper realizes nearly two decades have passed during his journey.
