Maheshwar Rao directs to ensure completion of Yelahanka Upanagara- Doddaballapur Main Road flyover by Dec. 2025

The Hindu19-06-2025
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao has directed officials to ensure the completion of the ongoing flyover construction on the Yelahanka Upanagara-Doddaballapur Main Road by the end of December 2025.
During an inspection near Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Main Road in Yelahanka Zone's Yelahanka Upanagara limits, he stated that 60% of the 2-km-long flyover construction on Doddaballapur Main Road has been completed. He instructed officials and contractors to expedite and complete the remaining work within the stipulated timeline.
The pedestrian pathway along Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Main Road has collapsed at certain points, causing inconvenience to the public. He directed officials to immediately undertake repair work, including the installation of curb stones and restoration of the damaged sections.
He also noted that iron rods from a transformer pole installed by Bescom are protruding close to ground level on the footpath, creating a hazard for pedestrians and instructed the officials from the power utility to rectify the issue without delay.
Penalty for littering
During the inspection of the 16th B Cross Road in Yelahanka Upanagara, some shopkeepers dumped waste on the footpath. He directed marshals to impose fines on the offenders and instructed them to warn shopkeepers not to dump waste along the roadside or in vacant plots in the future.
At Chikkabommasandra Cross, it was found that slabs had not been installed on a 15-meter stretch of the pedestrian path. He instructed the officials concerned to install the slabs immediately to ensure safe passage for pedestrians.
Action against unauthorized constructions
It was observed that a building was being constructed in violation of the approved plan on the 1st Main Road in A-Sector of Yelahanka Upanagara. He instructed officials to issue notices under the BBMP Act, 2020, and remove the unauthorized portions of the building. He also directed officials to take strict action against all buildings within the Yelahanka Zone that are being constructed in violation of approved plans.
Emphasising the importance of proper upkeep, he instructed officials to submit proposals for annual maintenance funds for newly built infrastructure in Yelahanka Upanagar, including the watchtower, cycle track, car tower, ''Kannada Akshara Male' installation, and decorative lighting.

Church Street vendors demand an end to harassment

The street vendors of Church Street on Monday held a silent protest on the street against the alleged harassment they are facing from Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Bengaluru City Police. The protesters later submitted a memorandum to the BBMP Joint Commissioner, East Zone with their demands. 'The rich are allowed to park their car for free on Church Street, but poor street vendors are being levied with a penalty of ₹500. This is a violation of the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act 2014,' the protesters said. They added, 'BBMP has only given us ID cards and they also gave loans to street vendors. Now why is the same BBMP harassing street vendors? Is there no space for poor street vendors in Brand Bengaluru?' The memorandum submitted by the Karnataka Pragathipara Beedi Vyaparigala Sangha said that from 15 to 20 years, 53 authorised street vendors, many of whom are women from poor families, have been selling items like clothes, fruits, plastic items, earrings etc. It also alleged that residents' associations from the locality have pressured the police to harass the vendors. The vendors also demanded that a formal order should be issued to prevent harassment of all registered Church Street vendors and all the unregistered vendors should also be included in BBMP's next survey and provided with vending certificates. They also said that Town Vending Committee (TVC) meetings should be held before making decisions affecting them. The protesters were taken into preventive custody by the police as they were walking to the BBMP and were released after three hours.

Russian woman with expired business-visa found living in Gokarna cave with kids, rescued

A 40-year-old Russian woman, identified as Nina Kutina alias Mohi, and her two young children were rescued from a remote cave in the Ramatirtha hills of Kumta taluk, Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, after living in near-complete isolation for nearly two weeks. The rescue was carried out by local police during a routine patrol on Friday, officials confirmed on Saturday. A Russian woman was found living with her two kids in an isolated cave in Karnataka's Gokarna. Drawn to Hinduism and Indian spiritual traditions, she chose to retreat into the forested hills of Gokarna with her two children, Preya (6) and Ama (4). The family had been residing inside a natural cave, surrounded by dense forest and steep terrain. Mohi had turned the cave into a spiritual haven, installing a Rudra idol and spending her days performing puja and meditation. She reportedly lived off the land, though police are still investigating how she and her children managed food and water during their time in the wilderness. It was during a post-landslide patrol that Circle Inspector Sridhar and his team noticed sarees and clothes hanging outside the cave. Intrigued and cautious, they made their way through the thick underbrush and discovered the woman and her children living in isolation. Luckily, they were unharmed and in reasonably good health.' Authorities later discovered that Mohi's visa had expired back in 2017, and the exact duration of her stay in India remains uncertain. Police suspect she may have entered Karnataka from Goa before settling in Gokarna's forested region. After the rescue, police arranged temporary accommodation for Mohi and her children at an ashram run by a Sadhvi in Gokarna. With the assistance of a local NGO, the Russian Embassy has been contacted and official deportation procedures have been initiated. The family is expected to be moved to Bengaluru as part of the legal process. (With PTI inputs)
