Harrowing videos have emerged on social media of victims of human trafficking being electrocuted or beaten and forced to engage in a scam with a sinister name -
They are made to lure people in on dating apps, and after a period of online flirting introduce an opportunity to get rich quick on what look like serious investment sites.

Investigative journalist Mariana Van Zeller travelled to Myanmar to talk to people who made it out alive and to discover who is behind these heart-breaking scams.

It is estimated that $75billion has been stolen worldwide and thousands of Brits are among the victims. The practice has also led to numerous suicides across the world, including one former police officer in Wiltshire who took his own life after losing £100,000.
Pig butchering compounds have been cropping up around South East Asia. But the main hub is in Myanmar.

'Tricked, tortured and trapped'
Lin is a Chinese national whose nightmare began when he accepted an offer of what appeared to be legitimate work.
'They would never just let you go,' he explains. 'When you first arrive they won't allow you to have any contact with the outside. They would start threatening you to participate in scams. 95 per cent of the people at the company were tricked into joining.
"It's like

'They beat my stomach, they put a polythene bag in my mouth, handcuffs," he says. "I stand up. And they are putting water, you know, like washing car, that pressure. 24 hours I stand like this. I'm wet, they give me electric on stomach. So much punishment.'

Conditions are so barbaric within the compounds that some will do anything to escape.
Lin explains: 'We planned to tie up and kidnap the supervisor and escape, but somehow they found out. They chased me, so I jumped.'
Lin jumped from a third floor window, breaking both his legs - but managed to get away.
Mariana says: 'Despite what Lin went through he is one of the lucky ones. Thousands and thousands of people being held in these compounds, tortured, beaten. The fact that nothing is being done, how is this allowed?'

Since the military coup in Myanmar, militia groups run the Karen area where most of the compounds are.
The city of Shwe Kokko - like a mini Las Vegas with casinos and scamming compounds - is effectively run by a shadowy Chinese corporation called Yatai.
Mariana says: 'In the last few years Yatai has been embroiled in multiple scandals relating to scamming, money laundering, and human trafficking.'
The people behind Yatai gave her a strictly controlled publicity tour of the city in an attempt to clean up their image.
Yatai's original plan was to turn Shwe Kokko into a gambling hub. They poured billions of dollars into the development but Covid and the civil war put an end to the dream.
Now it is claimed that Yatai is renting many buildings in the city to scamming companies to keep it afloat.

But another whistleblower, a video call model called Angel, told Mariana: 'I arrived in Shwe Kokko one and a half years ago. I'm scamming every day. I have so much pressure. I can't even sleep.
'I want to go back to my family. I don't want to come back to that kind of place.
'I have to FaceTime and talk with the target. The chatting team chats with the talker and they transfer to me.'

Angel is a Myanmar national, not a human trafficking victim. But financial problems left her with no option but to join a scamming company.
It is Angel's job to flirt with the victims and she works long hours, seven days a week, only being allowed to leave the compound once every six months.
And she says sometimes video call models like her are forced to sleep with the Chinese bosses.
'They told us they will fire us. I just want to refuse but they force me to. 'Don't refuse because you will be in danger'. Sometimes with the boss' friends and relatives also.
'I don't want to work anymore. I have no choice.'

'Whether a victim of circumstance or trafficking, those stuck in Myanmar have little recourse.'

Stockport has traditionally seen much lower levels of gang activity than Manchester, and figures show it has the second lowest crime rate in Greater Manchester as a whole. 'Cars will pull up and people will get in so they can pretend to be friends,' she said. 'But it's obvious what's going on. I want to move because it's so bad. But it's hard to find a bigger home.' Advertisement She added that police are 'here every day' due to persistent anti-social behaviour but 'never do anything'. Her neighbour Steven Wood, 39, said he 'worries' about the older members of his family because of 'intimidating' gangs of drug-taking youths hanging around on the streets or in alleyways. 'It used to be lovely round here but it's not now,' he told The Sun. 'You're constantly on edge waiting for something to happen.' He added that his aunty had made a 'long list' of reports to police but 'nothing seems to get done'. Advertisement 'I only really talk to my neighbour and the kids are really cheeky and swear at you and call you names. 'There's no respect at all with the younger generation.' She said there had been a recent machete attack on the estate and other violent incidents, including a taxi driver being stabbed, and she wanted to 'get out'. 'Gangs & guns' Nurse Amy Fletcher, 28, said she knew 'dodgy' activities took place on the estate and police regularly carried out raids. Advertisement 'Probably the worst thing is people stealing,' she said. 'I saw some kids up on a roof the other day. 'And I thought to myself, 'Please get down from there, that's not sensible'.' And another Bridgehall resident, who only gave his name as David, said: 'There are loads of kids around here who cause trouble. In January 2021 a carjacking led to a restaurant owner and father-of-three being run over and killed. It used to be lovely round here but it's not now. Advertisement Five teenagers - including Connor Read, 19 - were later sentenced for their role in the shocking crime. In June that year 'gang rivalry' spilled out into the streets of Cheadle Hulme when a 15-year-old gunman fired shots at a convenience store in broad daylight before pointing the gun at a delivery driver. Manchester Crown Court heard how Jacob Richards had become 'firmly entrenched in a culture of gangs and guns' and had 'bragged' about his crimes in raps. Richards also carried out a separate arson attack with fellow gunman Remico Embrack, 20, and was convicted for a catalogue of violent incidents in 2024. Advertisement County lines crackdown As far back as 2020, a Youth Violence Strategy report had warned of 'increasing levels of serious youth violence, criminal exploitation and working with children who identify themselves as having a gang affiliation'. The force has been involved in other initiatives and operations to tackle serious and organised crime. Programme Challenger sees them working with other agencies to disrupt and dismantle criminal networks, including drug lines, the buying and use of firearms and money laundering. Advertisement And Operation Venture, launched in 2023, sees officers working as part of a multi-agency team, which includes the Greater Manchester's Violence Reduction Unit (VRU), and using a variety of tactics to tackle violence, particularly involving young people and knife crime. Last year it led to three men from Brinnington being charged as part of a crackdown on a county lines drug-dealing operation. Three separate incidents also led to five arrests and the recovery of a large amount of cash and drugs and the 'dismantling' of an OCG in the Shaw Heath area. On the one-year anniversary of Challenger, the force claimed to have made a 'sizeable impact' on reducing serious violence on the streets, with 452 arrests, 130 weapons recovered, and £250,0000 seized. A HUGE traveller fleet has set up camp outside taxpayers' homes, leaving "stinking" piles of rubbish scattered around a much-loved park, locals claim. Dozens of caravans and other vehicles arrived at Swanshurst Park on the border of Moseley, Birmingham, last Sunday (July 20). People say they're annoyed the council regularly clears away the group's rubbish with the city in the midst of a months-long bin collection strike. One resident claims a traveller keeps trying to buy his designer French bulldog for £250. The Friends of Swanshurst Park Facebook group says the travellers gained access by moving a large log and driving in past bike racks. Advertisement READ MORE NEWS Mum-of-two Rabai Tahir, who lives opposite the park, moved to the UK from Dubai with her husband five years ago and is 'astonished' travellers are allowed to keep coming back. They leave lots of rubbish bags and some of it stinks. It's cleaned up by my council tax money. I don't allow my kids to go over to the play park when they're there. We don't know who they are. "I don't allow my kids to go over to the play park when they're there. We don't know who they are. 'It's shocking for me and my husband that people can stay here for weeks. It's a community park.' Advertisement Most read in The Sun Sandra Cotterill has lived opposite the park for 19 years. She said: 'I've had no trouble with them, they never bother me. Some people don't want to take their kids and dogs there." However, she is annoyed that the local authority makes such an effort to clear the group's rubbish when thousands in the city have seen their own rubbish pile up for months. Inside Birmingham's bin wars as strikes see streets overrun with RATS and piles of rotting food and rubbish are left to fester Sandra said: 'They bag up all the rubbish and the council cleans it all away. "We're paying our taxes, and we can't get our bin bags picked up, but they get theirs taken.' Advertisement Birmingham has been hit by long-running bin strikes. Piles of rubbish have been seen in parts of the city since bin collection workers walked out in January. Sandra's neighbour, who has lived in the area for 40 years and walks her dogs in the park, said residents are getting fed up with different traveller groups constantly coming and going. The woman, who did not want to be named, said: 'They clear them off and a week later another different group comes here. "I keep away from them, they take over the park really. We're all just fed up. Advertisement 'Travellers move the logs. We need a permanent solution to stop them coming onto the park. "The amount of money the council must spend tidying up is ridiculous.' Another man who, who says he's been offered money for his pet, added: 'They're all right, they're not bad people and I've got Irish in my family. 2025 Birmingham bin strike The Birmingham bin strike is an ongoing stand off between refuse workers and Birmingham City Council over pay and the removal of roles. It started in January 2025 and full scale industrial action was then taken from March 11, involving members of Unite union. The same month, the local authority declared a major incident after 17,000 tonnes of rubbish were left uncollected on the city's streets. In April, the government was forced to call in Army specialists to provide logistical support. This month, Unite said it would review its relationship with the Labour Party after the government expressed support for the council amid the strike. According to reports, lower income areas, including Sparkhill, Balsall Heath, Small Heath, Sparkbrook and Ladywood have suffered the greatest compared to more affluent suburbs like Harborne and Edgbaston. On Friday (July 25), a second megapicket co-ordinated by Strike Map started across several parts of Birmingham, involving 26 organisations from across the trade union movement, in support of the striking workers. Former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn urged Birmingham City Council to 'get a deal now' as more piles of rubbish were left uncollected. 'I don't like the mess though and my kids can't use the park when they're around.' Advertisement One resident, a new mum, added: 'They make a mess, but it doesn't bother me. A lot of people here don't like it because the park is for children and it restricts them from using it.' This week the admin of the volunteer-run Swanshurst Park Facebook group posted: 'Spent another couple of hours clearing up litter round the Park. "I'm fairly sure that some of it was nothing to do with the Travellers and had been dropped last night by other people traversing the Park. 'Had some good interactions with some of the women who thanked me for my efforts and assured they would bag up their rubbish. Advertisement "We will see but I am sure it will be better than on previous occasions. "Some of the children wanted to help me and I am sure this must be the way forward to get a dialogue going.' A council spokesperson said: " steps to recover this land where unauthorised encampments encroach upon it. "The council has useable transit sites and plots for use by the Gypsy, Assessment carried out and updated in 2019 can be found on our website."
