Pair of Oklahoma Sooners named to Butkus Award watch list
On Wednesday, a pair of Sooners were named to the Butkus Award watch list: Kip Lewis and Sammy Omosigho. The Butkus Award is given to college football's top linebacker.
Lewis was also named to the Nagurski Trophy watch list earlier this week. He's going into his fourth season with the Sooners and has become one of the best players on the defense over the last several years with his penchant for big plays. Lewis' speed and athleticism have made him a nightmare in coverage. In 2024, Lewis returned an interception for a touchdown in Oklahoma's wins over Auburn and Alabama. Lewis finished last season with 65 total tackles and four tackles for loss.
Omosigho is every bit the athlete that Lewis is. The former four-star prospect is in a camp battle with fellow former four-star Kobie McKinzie. Omosigho saw 301 snaps last season and was fifth on the team with 39 total tackles. He also had five tackles for loss, a pass defensed, and a forced fumble in a rotational role for the Sooners.
Oklahoma has taken home the Butkus Award four times. Brian Bosworth, the only two-time winner of the award, earned the honor back in 1985 and 1986. Rocky Calmus won the Butkus in 2001 and Teddy Lehman won it in 2003.

Red River Rivalry between Oklahoma and Texas likely to be battle of unbeatens
College football season is less than a month away, and Oklahoma appears to be on the rise. At least, the Sooners appear to be set to improve on last year's 6-7 season. That will almost certainly be the case if Brad Crawford at CBS Sports has his preseason prediction come true. Crawford looked at each of the 16 teams in the Southeastern Conference and predicted when each would be handed its first loss in league play. For Oklahoma, it comes in the second SEC game, though by that point, OU will already have been, at least, 4-1, in Crawford's predictions. That second SEC game, by the way? It's the Red River Rivalry. Imagine the hype for Red River if both teams come in unbeaten and inside the top 10? It's possible. If the Sooners take out Michigan and Auburn during the opening month of the campaign, Brent Venables' new-look team will have a perfect record going to Dallas. - Crawford, CBS Sports It wasn't that long ago when OU and Texas both met as undefeateds in the regular season. Back in 2023, the 12th-ranked Sooners and No. 5 Longhorns played to a 34-30 Oklahoma win at the Cotton Bowl. Brent Venables' team would stumble over the next month with losses against Kansas and Oklahoma State to stifle a potentially massive season, but that was then. Texas may enter 2025 as the No. 1 team in the nation, and Oklahoma appears likely to be ranked in the top-25. Another year of each entering Dallas unbeaten may provide a mutual top-10 matchup. The Sooners, and Venables specifically, could really use it, and with John Mateer and Jadyn Ott on offense, it's definitely possible. Crawford believes that Venables needs a strong start to the 2025 season more than just about any other coach. With games against Michigan and Auburn in the first four weeks, Venables and the Sooners have an early opportunity to make a statement heading even before they get to the Red River Showdown. Texas A&M lands commitment from elite 2027 4-star QB out of Georgia
Texas A&M's recruiting pipeline in Georgia is real. The program's future at quarterback will always be unknown in today's transfer portal age. Still, knowing that redshirt sophomore Marcel Reed will likely return in 2026, combined with 2026 four-star commit Helaman Casuga joining the program, Sunday's news that 2027 four-star signal caller Jayce Johnson has committed to Texas A&M is just more proof that coach Mike Elko and OC Collin Klein are dedicated avoiding any drop off at the most critical position in the game. Choosing the Aggies over Tennessee, Florida State, Mississippi State, and South Carolina, Johnson is the first 2027 commit in A&M's class after four-star tight end George Lamons decommitted from the program late last month. This summer, Johnson has continued to improve as a pocket passer and has established himself as a dual-threat quarterback, but he needs to be less static in the pocket when his early reads break down. If Reed and Miles O'Neill return in 2026, Texas A&M's QB room will be deep enough to let Johnson develop into the star many of us expect he'll be. Ahead of his junior season at Lowndes High School, Johnson made his mark during his 2024 sophomore season after throwing for 1,799 yards, 16 touchdowns, and three interceptions, paired with over 300 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. These numbers are just the start for Johnson, whose elite arm talent and impressive touch put him ahead of schedule as a passer. According to 247Sports, Johnson is currently positioned as the 63rd-ranked prospect in the 2027 cycle, the 6th-ranked quarterback, and the 7th-ranked prospect in Georgia. Chet Holmgren meets Oklahoma legend Adrian Peterson
Enjoying his downtime, Chet Holmgren went on another side quest that involved a cross-sport interaction every Oklahoma sports fan loved. The calendar has flipped to August, which means the NBA is in its driest part of the year. Everybody around the league is on vacation for the next couple of months before the 2025-26 season starts. Holmgren traveled to the 2025 Panini VIP Party over the weekend. Panini America hosted the event. The company is known for selling sports trading cards, memorabilia and autographed merchandise. It includes about every collegiate and pro sports league you can imagine. At the event, athletes from across the globe attended. Holmgren took to social media to post some of the photos he had taken of players he grew up watching. One included Oklahoma and NFL legend Adrian Peterson. The future Hall-of-Famer is one of the greatest running backs ever. Peterson attended Oklahoma for three college seasons from 2004-06. He then spent nearly a decade with the Minnesota Vikings, where he carved out one of the greatest careers. He was a perennial Pro Bowl player and won the 2012 MVP award. Considering Holmgren grew up in Minnesota, it was a moment where the 23-year-old was likely starstruck. Both also have obvious ties to Oklahoma. In the seven-footer's case, he helped the Thunder win their first NBA championship this past June. Always fun to see the type of adventures NBA players go through when they have free time. So much of their lives is fixated on basketball. For Holmgren, his free time includes linking up with several other all-time athletes from various sports at a trading card company event.
