Broncos expected to play Bo Nix and starters vs. 49ers in preseason opener
Some NFL teams play their starters in joint practices and then rest them in preseason games as a precaution. Broncos coach Sean Payton has a different approach.
"There's this feeling that, 'Oh if I practice them a bunch, then I'm not gonna to play them in a game.' We're playing guys in the game," Payton said after Monday's practice.

The Super Bowl-winning coach believes in playing starters during preseason, so fans should expect to see quarterback Bo Nix and Co. out on the field against the 49ers this week.
The Broncos, of course, will be cautious with players who are nursing or coming back from injuries, but with few exceptions, Payton is expected to play his starters in San Francisco.

Sean Payton hosted a familiar face at Broncos training camp
The Denver Broncos had one of Sean Payton's former players at practice on Monday, although most NFL fans are more familiar with the guest for his coaching career than his quarterback days. Jason Garrett, who was a backup quarterback with the New York Giants when Payton served as their offensive coordinator in the early 2000s, was at the Broncos' facility on Monday for the team's training camp practice. 'I coached him, and he was our backup quarterback," Payton said after practice. "He's always been a close friend. He's made a couple of trips. I think he's doing some type of podcast special on leadership, and so he's here for the day. I'll spend some time with him. He's really bright, and he's been a close friend. We're going to go back to 2000, which is when we signed him. It's good to see him.' Garrett also visited Broncos training camp last summer. Garrett served as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from 2011-2019, and he most recently served as the Giants' offensive coordinator from 2020-2021 before transitioning to broadcasting with NBC Sports. Saquon Barkley says he declined a spot on President Donald Trump's sports council
PHILADELPHIA — Saquon Barkley has declined an invitation to join President Donald Trump's council on sports, fitness, and nutrition, which is being revitalized under an executive order that also re-establishes the Presidential Fitness Test for American children. Barkley said Monday following Eagles' practice that he had declined the invitation. 'A couple months ago, it was brought to my team about the council,' Barkley said. 'So I'm not really too familiar with it. I felt like that I am going to be super busy. Me and my family thought it would probably be of best interest to not accept that. I was definitely a little shocked when my name was mentioned. I'm assuming it's something great, so I appreciate it but was a little shocked when my name was mentioned.' Trump last week re-established the Presidential Fitness Test for American children, a fixture of public schools for decades that gauged young people's health and athleticism with 1-mile runs, sit-ups and stretching exercises. 'This is a wonderful tradition, and we're bringing it back,' Trump said of the fitness test that began in 1966 but was phased out during the Obama administration. The executive order also reinvigorated the national sports council that could have included Barkley. Barkley won AP Offensive Player of the Year last season after rushing for 2,005 yards, eighth-best in NFL history, in his first season with the Eagles. Barkley has golfed with Trump and former President Barack Obama over the last year, and the running back attended the White House celebration of the champion Eagles while some teammates — notably star quarterback Jalen Hurts — skipped the ceremony. Barkley visited Trump in April at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, and caught a ride with the president to Washington on Air Force One and then to the White House on Marine One. 'He loved it,' Trump said then of Barkley's short flight on the presidential airplane. 'He's a great young guy and an incredible football player. Saquon had a season for the ages, running behind the most powerful offensive line in the NFL.' Barkley, meanwhile, pushed back on social media criticism following the visit. He noted that he had already golfed with Obama, a Democrat.
