AVIC Shenyang Aircraft to Aerospace Nanhu Electronic: Chinese defense stocks rally as Pakistan plans J-35 jets purchase

Mint09-06-2025
Chinese defence stocks surged on Monday following reports that Pakistan plans to acquire some of China's most advanced weaponry in a major arms deal. AVIC Shenyang Aircraft Company share price hit the 10% daily upper limit on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, marking gains for a third consecutive session.
According to a Bloomberg report, Pakistan intends to procure 40 J-35 fifth-generation fighter jets, along with KJ-500 airborne early warning and control aircraft and HQ-19 ballistic missile defence systems. The J-35, developed by AVIC Shenyang Aircraft and unveiled at the 2024 Zhuhai Airshow, is considered the centrepiece of the proposed deal. If finalised, this would mark the first international sale of the J-35 fighter jets.
AVIC Shenyang share price has rallied over 16% in the past seven trading sessions. The broader optimism also lifted other Chinese defence stocks. Shares of Aerospace Nanhu Electronic Information Technology surged as much as 15%, while Inner Mongolia First Machinery Group, Jiangxi Hongdu Aviation Industry, AVIC Heavy Machinery, and AVIC Chengdu Aircraft rose between 2% and 4%. The Hang Seng China A Aerospace & Defence Index gained nearly 2%.
The development comes against the backdrop of renewed geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan. Pakistan's announcement, made via a social media post on Friday, follows a series of confrontations that began in early May. Chinese defence stocks had earlier rallied when Pakistan claimed that Chinese-made J-10C fighter jets helped down six Indian aircraft.
However, that rally in Chinese defence stocks was short-lived after India downplayed those claims and launched 'Operation Sindoor,' a precision airstrike campaign deep into Pakistani territory.
Amid these escalations, Chinese defence stocks have seen heightened volatility, reacting to each turn in the India-Pakistan conflict.

Groundless, slander: China denies claims of undermining Rafale jet reputation

The Chinese Ministry of National Defence has denied allegations that it attempted to undermine the global reputation and appeal of the French Rafale fighter media, Global Times, in a post on X, said that the Chinese defence ministry labelled the accusations as 'pure groundless rumours and slander,' the ministry reiterated China's commitment to a 'prudent and responsible approach to military exports,' and emphasised its role in promoting 'regional and global peace and stability.'advertisementAccording to a report by the Associated Press, Chinese embassies allegedly ran a coordinated disinformation campaign to discredit Rafale jets following their deployment by India during Operation Sindoor against Pakistan in May. Citing French military and intelligence officials, the report claims that Beijing used its foreign missions to influence existing and potential buyers of the Rafale, urging them to opt for Chinese-made alternatives Chinese defence ministry, however, refuted the claims, saying that it develops defence equipment 'to ensure its own security – not to become an 'arms dealer,' nor to elevate itself by belittling others.'It also criticised certain Western politicians and media outlets for interpreting events 'through a lens of confrontation,' adding, 'This arrogance, projecting their own mind-set onto others, ultimately reveals their own insecurity.'French intelligence sources cited by AP claim that Chinese embassy defence attachs approached officials from countries that have ordered or are considering purchasing Rafales. During these meetings, the Chinese officials allegedly argued that the Rafales used by the Indian Air Force performed poorly, while promoting Chinese-made weaponry as superior military officials said the campaign involved viral social media posts, AI-generated content, manipulated imagery portraying fake Rafale debris, and video game-style simulations to misrepresent combat scenarios. Over 1,000 new social media accounts were reportedly created as the India-Pakistan conflict intensified, pushing narratives of Chinese technological Defence Ministry described the effort as 'a vast campaign of disinformation' aimed at promoting the superiority of Chinese-designed defence systems. 'The Rafale was not randomly targeted. It is a highly capable fighter jet, exported abroad and deployed in a high-visibility theatre,' the ministry said on its ministry further stressed that the campaign went beyond targeting a fighter jet, saying, 'By attacking the aircraft, certain actors sought to undermine the credibility of France and its defence industrial and technological base. The disinformation campaign therefore did not merely target an aircraft, but more broadly a national image of strategic autonomy, industrial reliability, and solid partnerships.'Dassault Aviation has sold 533 Rafale jets so far, with 323 exported to several countries, including Egypt, India, Qatar, Greece, Croatia, the United Arab Emirates, Serbia, and Indonesia. Indonesia alone has ordered 42 aircraft and is reportedly considering additional purchases.- EndsTune InMust Watch

Global gold demand surges: India holds 15 pc of $23trillion global gold market now

The global gold market, now valued at approximately $23 trillion, is witnessing a surge in demand as central banks ramp up their purchases in a move to reduce dependence on the US dollar, according to the July 2025 edition of the DSP Mutual Fund's Netra report. In comparison, global foreign exchange reserves stand at around $12.5 trillion. The report notes that even a modest 5 per cent shift of these reserves into gold could trigger a significant and sustained rally in gold prices. India continues to hold a dominant position in the global gold landscape, accounting for 15 per cent of the total gold held worldwide. Of all the gold mined to date, 65 per cent is in the form of jewellery, indicating both the cultural and financial importance of the metal, particularly in countries like India. Central banks have emerged as the primary drivers of the recent gold demand boom. Between 2000 and 2016, total central bank gold purchases amounted to $85 billion. In stark contrast, in 2024 alone, central banks acquired gold worth $84 billion. Since 2022, central banks have been consistently purchasing nearly 1,000 tonnes of gold annually, which represents over a quarter of the annual global mining supply. This shift highlights the growing preference for non-dollar reserve assets amid concerns about the volatility of US Treasury Bonds, which have historically been viewed as safe-haven investments. The Reserve Bank currently holds 880 metric tonnes of gold, according to the latest figures. However, it has refrained from adding to its reserves in FY26, likely anticipating a correction in gold prices, which have risen by over 80 per cent in the past five years. The rally in gold prices has been driven largely by geopolitical uncertainty, trade tensions, and a lack of attractive alternatives to the US dollar as a global reserve currency. The report points out that potential alternatives to the dollar are riddled with limitations. The Euro continues to show structural weaknesses due to fiscal imbalances within the Economic and Monetary Union. The Chinese yuan, though increasingly influential, remains heavily state-controlled and lacks the transparency and global trust required to function as a major reserve currency. Other currencies are simply too small to attract meaningful interest from central banks. Additionally, the report highlights a positive domestic trend in India, noting that strong operating cash flows have resulted in elevated operating cash flow margins. This signals improved capital allocation discipline and corporate governance, strengthening India's economic fundamentals at a time when global financial systems remain under pressure.

China fumes as Modi greets Dalai Lama on his birthday

Beijing: China on Monday objected to Prime Minister Narendra Modi wishing the Dalai Lama on his 90th birthday and to Indian ministers flocking to his residence in Dharamshala for celebrations, reiterating Beijing's stance on matters concerning Tibet. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told reporters that the country's position on Tibet is consistent and well-known. Mao further stated that the Dalai Lama is a political exile and alleged that he has been involved in efforts to separate Xizang -- also known as Tibet outside China -- under the guise of religion. 'India should fully appreciate the great sensitivity of Xizang-related issues and recognise the anti-separatist nature of the 14th Dalai Lama and honour the commitment it made to China on issues related to Xizang,' she said. She also alleged that India is trying to use the Dalai Lama issue to interfere in China's internal affairs and cautioned New Delhi against doing so. The Chinese Embassy in India protested against the Dalai Lama's announcement regarding the continuation of the reincarnation system, asserting that he has no authority to decide whether the institution should continue or be abolished. Prime Minister Modi on Sunday extended warm wishes to the Dalai Lama, and said he has been an enduring symbol of love, compassion, patience and moral discipline. "His message has inspired respect and admiration across all faiths. We pray for his continued good health and long life," Modi posted on X. Union ministers Kiren Rijiju and Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, and Sikkim minister Sonam Lama attended his birthday celebrations in Dharamshala.
