Shepparton News ends daily print editions as readers move online
Sylvia Campbell has fond memories of her late husband flicking through the local daily newspaper, Shepparton News.
The northern Victorian paper was a fixture in the Campbell house and once it was read would be taken to the neighbour, sharing the cost.
"If I was lucky and it did not go next door, I would get to read the paper but half the time it had gone before I got back home.
"But he has been gone now nearly 11 years, so just one less expense for me when you are on your own."
The 84-year-old said she still occasionally picked up the paper and would often hear about its news through a close friend who bought the paper every day.
But that will come to an end soon.
McPherson Media Group announced last week that Shepparton News and another of its papers, Echuca's Riverine Herald, will become twice-weekly print editions.
The Riverine Herald was printed three times a week.
The company, which has run Shepparton News for 135 years, said the change would start on July 14 with printed editions on Tuesdays and Fridays.
It said it would provide daily news updates on its digital platforms through an upgraded mobile app, newsletters and audio bulletins.
Executive chairman Ross McPherson told the ABC's Statewide Drive program the company was adapting to fundamental changes in the industry.
"We need to provide the kind of service they are looking for."
Mr McPherson said the company had been considering the move for years.
"Most of our print readers are the older age groups and they are gradually dying," he said.
"Few under 50 pick up a print paper as often as they used to.
Ms Campbell is the vice-president of the Shepperton Senior Citizens Club, which has about 90 members and has been operating for more than 65 years.
"They are not helping the elderly at all," she said.
"A lot of us do not have computers or laptops so that [the print paper] is where we get our information from.
"It makes it very hard for the older ones."
Deakin University Professor of Communication and Australian local news expert, Kristy Hess, said a national study conducted a few years ago found the demand for local print news remained strong.
"People are very passionate about feeling a newspaper between their fingertips," she said.
Professor Hess said it was important that the media industry's continued shift towards digital platforms factored in everyone's needs.
"I have long highlighted that that shift has to be slow to accommodate older audiences to address issues of digital literacy," she said.

‘Buyer beware': Huge change to how homes are sold in Qld
Queensland's real estate industry is bracing for new laws which will make it the nation's most regulated major market – but buyers' advocates say the reforms still fall short. The landmark seller disclosure scheme effective from August 1 will 'fundamentally alter' how homes are sold, according to industry experts. Sellers will have to share a wide range of details about their property before contracts are exchanged, including zoning, rates and water charges, tree orders or heritage listing, government orders requiring work or money, and any building work carried out by an owner-builder in the last six years. But the pendulum still swings to 'buyer beware', with controversial omissions including the structural soundness of the building or pest infestation, the presence of asbestos, and any history of flood or other natural hazards. Real Estate Institute of Queensland CEO Antonia Mercorella said the changes to the Property Law Act was one of the most significant since it was introduced in 1974. 'While this is a meaningful change that enhances consumer protection, it's important for buyers to understand that the seller's disclosure regime may not prescribe or encompass everything they may wish to know about a property, and accordingly they should still conduct their own due diligence,' Ms Mercorella said. 'The 'buyer beware' principle continues to apply in Australia.' Ms Mercorella said the peak body had been pushing for a clearer disclosure process for more than a decade, which had been 'largely delivered' by the legislation. Challenges included ensuring sellers had easy and low-cost access to the information they had to reveal to buyers. Brisbane buyers agent Melinda Jennison said the updated minimum disclosure requirements lacked in areas 'buyers are commonly exposed to risk'. 'It would have been great if sellers were required to disclose any uncertified or unapproved building work that had taken place at the property,' Ms Jennison said. 'Sellers should also be obligated to disclose any previous building or pest defects that have been identified in the past, even if those issues have since been addressed. 'The availability of past inspection outcomes would provide an important layer of transparency for buyers.' Ms Jennison said this information would allow buyers to make better informed decisions, rather than having to undertake costly investigations of their own after contracts were exchanged. Property lawyer Bryce Melville, of Redemont, said Queensland's new seller law was tougher than its counterparts in NSW and Victoria, noting seven specific disclosures that were not required by either of the two other states. 'Sellers and agents need to prepare now,' Mr Melville said. 'For the first time, sellers must provide a full set of disclosure documents, including title searches, planning certificates and environmental notices, before a contract is signed, or risk the contract becoming void. 'The changes bring Queensland in line with Victoria and NSW, but go even further, setting a new national benchmark for buyer protection.' Chris Burling, of Business Depot Legal, said the reform aimed to boost transparency and avoid disputes by giving buyers crucial information upfront. But it was 'not a free pass', Mr Burling said. 'Unlike other states such as NSW and Victoria, Queensland has historically operated under a 'buyer beware' model, placing the onus on the buyer to uncover crucial property details through independent due diligence,' Mr Burling said. 'This has often left buyers vulnerable to unexpected risks and financial loss if key issues weren't identified before entering into a contract.' The new rules were expected to create a ripple effect through the market, potentially delaying off-market deals and auctions as sellers would need to engage a solicitor earlier to prepare the disclosure documents. Ms Jennison said the reforms, while 'a step in the right direction', left room for improvement. 'In particular, standardising the disclosure of known historical issues would significantly reduce buyer vulnerability and improve transparency across the market.'

Sting in the tail for some workers in super boost
Workers are being urged to check with their pay packets to ensure an increase to the super guarantee doesn't result in their pay being docked. As the final increase to Australia's super guarantee comes into effect, employers will be required to devote a record 12 per cent of workers' salaries into their super for the first time. For most workers on an award agreement, it's happy days, with employers forced to tip in extra super without any reduction in their take-home pay. But there's a sting in the tail for a minority of workers who are on a total remuneration package including super, because it could mean less take-home pay. In fact, for up to 40 per cent of Australians who have an individual pay arrangement with their employer that pays superannuation as part of their salary package, the 0.5 per cent could result in a reduction in take-home pay. CPA Australia's Superannuation Lead, Richard Webb said while the super guarantee was positive for a majority of workers, some would cop a pay cut from July 1. 'If your employment contract includes a total remuneration package including super, this could mean less take-home pay at the end of the month,' he said. 'However, for those on award or enterprise agreements, your pay agreement is more likely to be a salary, which means the change will not affect your take-home pay. 'It's a good idea to check with your employer to see how they view the changes and what it means for you. Otherwise, you might get a shock if your take-home pay is a little less than expected.' Nearly 30 years after the Hawke-Keating Government introduced superannuation starting at just 1 per cent, around 14 million workers are set to secure the new boost. New Treasury analysis shows that millions of Australians will be better off at retirement as a direct result as the super guarantee lifts from 11.5 to 12 per cent. 'These reforms will make a meaningful difference for millions of Australians who work hard on low and award wages, and Australians working towards a well-deserved, dignified retirement,'' Treasurer Jim Chalmers said. 'Under Labor, inflation is down substantially, real wages are up, unemployment is low, our economy is growing, debt is down and interest rates are falling, but we know people are still under pressure. 'All the progress we have made together means we are well placed and well prepared at a time of global economic uncertainty and volatility. 'Since we've come to government, we've increased the superannuation guarantee four times, and this means an extra $98,000 at retirement for a 30 year old earning the average full-time income.' For example, a worker at age 30 earning the average full-time income (around $103,000) will have an extra $21,000 at retirement as a result of this 0.5 percentage point increase alone. However, Treasurer Jim Chalmers said taking into account all of the Albanese Government's increases to the Superannuation guarantee (from 10 per cent to 12 per cent), this worker will have an extra $98,000 at retirement.
