IJN performs Malaysia first Paediatric LVAD implantation
The pioneering procedure was carried out on 29 March 2025 on 12-year-old Jackson Foong Yi Jie, who was urgently referred to IJN with symptoms of advanced heart failure. Upon admission, Jackson's condition deteriorated rapidly, culminating in seizures and ventricular fibrillation—a life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia.
In a critical decision, IJN's multidisciplinary team implanted a Paediatric LVAD--a mechanical circulatory support device designed to temporarily take over the pumping function of the heart as bridge to recovery. The device stabilizes patients with severe heart failure, offering the heart time to recover or serving as a bridge to heart transplantation if required.
"This was a life-saving intervention," said Mr. Khairul Anuar bin Abdul Aziz, Deputy Head of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Department, who led the operation. "The LVAD enabled us to maintain circulation and provide the necessary time for the heart to regain function." A multidisciplinary team—including cardiothoracic surgeons, anesthetists, paediatric cardiologists, perfusionists, nurses, and operating theatre technicians—were mobilized to ensure the procedure's success.
After 16 days of LVAD support, Jackson's heart function improved significantly, allowing the device to be safely removed on 14 April 2025.
"Jackson has this contagious smile, and everyone involved in his care is thrilled that he has made an almost full recovery—with no neurological symptoms despite experiencing cardiac arrest,' said Dr Joyce Darshinee, Consultant Paediatric Cardiac Intensivist, who played a key role in Jackson's postoperative care. "Fortunately, his heart recovered, and he didn't need a heart transplant."
Jackson is making a remarkable recovery on the ward and is targeted to be discharged from IJN soon. This landmark achievement reflects IJN's steadfast commitment to advancing treatment for complex paediatric heart conditions and reinforces its leadership in cardiac innovation, both nationally and regionally.

Dzulkefly projected spillover benefits of RM12 to RM15 billion by 2030 for airlines, hotels, and local businesses. A key initiative under MYMT 2026 is the Flagship Medical Tourism Hospital (FMTH) programme, which recognises hospitals for clinical excellence and innovation. Four hospitals—Institut Jantung Negara, Island Hospital Penang, Mahkota Medical Centre, and Subang Jaya Medical Centre—are in the final assessment stage, with the winner to be announced in December. Adding star power to the campaign, celebrated singer Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza was named official ambassador, embodying trust and compassion—values central to Malaysia Healthcare. 2,293 patients on wait list for cardiothoracic surgery, some up to 7 months
Health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad said patients at government hospitals faced long wait times to undergo procedures such as coronary artery bypass graft or surgery to remove kidney stones. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A total of 2,293 patients are on a waiting list to undergo cardiothoracic surgeries in government hospitals, with some of them facing an average wait time of seven months, says health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad. In a written parliamentary reply, Dzulkefly said patients waiting to undergo procedures such as coronary artery bypass graft must wait about seven months on average. Meanwhile, there were 603 elective cases of paediatric cardiothoracic surgery, with the patients needing to wait an average of 21 months. 'This service is available in seven government hospitals that provide cardiothoracic surgeries. 'Paediatric cardiothoracic surgeries are in the meantime conducted by adult cardiothoracic specialists or referred to the National Heart Institute (IJN) because paediatric cardiothoracic surgeons are still being trained,' he said. Dzulkefly said 2,661 patients were waiting to undergo procedures to remove kidney stones, with each one expected to wait 11 months. He said the procedure was only provided by 13 public hospitals with resident urology surgeons. Another 9,233 patients are waiting to undergo cataract surgeries, with a waiting period of about three months. He said 56 government hospitals provided this operation. To reduce the wait time for surgical procedures, Dzulkefly said the ministry had placed more surgical specialists in more hospitals without a resident specialist. It is also working to reduce wait times through public-private partnerships.

RM50,000 target reached for teen's heart surgery
MALAYSIANS have once again shown their generosity by helping to raise more than RM50,000 for Chiet Ailai (pic), a 15-year-old boy from Sik, Kedah, in urgent need of heart surgery. Star Foundation, which launched an initiative under its Medical Fund Programme to raise the needed funds, has ended the fundraising drive initiated for him. Chiet was diagnosed with severe supravalvular neo-aortic stenosis and requires life-saving surgery at National Heart Insitute (IJN). Star Foundation's fundraising initiative to raise RM50,000 for life-saving heart surgery for Chiet Ailai, 15. The total cost of the procedure is RM80,000, with RM30,000 secured from One Hope Charity and Welfare, a non-profit organisation. Thanks to the public's swift support, the fundraising target has been met, and even surpassed. In a media statement, Star Foundation said the surplus funds would go towards helping the next eligible patient under the foundation's Medical Fund Programme. 'Donors who wish to obtain a tax exemption receipt are encouraged to complete the Medical Fund donation form on the Star Foundation's website,' it added.
