
How do we celebrate the 4th of July when American freedom is disappearing?
But the contradiction is far from new. Black, brown and Indigenous communities have always seen the gap between the ideals of American democracy and the lived reality of exclusion. Frederick Douglass's 1852 address What to the Slave is the Fourth of July? demanded that Americans confront the hypocrisy of celebrating liberty while millions were enslaved. Today, those contradictions persist in enduring racial disparities and policies that perpetuate segregation, second-class citizenship and selective protection of rights.
And just as the nation seemed to be inching toward reckoning and repair, we are now witnessing a dangerous backslide. Our federal government is increasingly hostile to even the mention of race and racism, actively dismantling protections that were hard-won over decades. Each day brings new signs of an anti-democratic campaign –eroding civil rights, stoking racial division and weaponizing law to silence dissent and disempower communities. This inversion of democracy – where power flows upward, not outward – is bold and widespread.
The chilling effects of federal overreach touch everyone. People of all races, backgrounds and positions have lost jobs, funding, and trust in institutions once seen as pillars of democracy. The backlash has laid bare a truth long familiar to marginalized communities: that America's stated ideals often fail to match its realities.
Still, despair is not a strategy. Democracy is not a spectator sport. It is built – and rebuilt – by people who show up in their communities, workplaces, schools and congregations, determined to make freedom real. The most powerful response we see is not top-down, but grassroots: people choosing to act, even in small ways, to defend democracy from where they stand.
We write as three legal professionals – of different racial identities, vantage points, and approaches to justice – but united in our understanding of the urgency of this moment to ask a question that may feel counterintuitive to those trained in the law: What can people do to advance democracy and equity outside of the courts?
First, we must not retreat. Rather, we must overcome our disillusionment, disheartenment and exhaustion and recognize our linked fate across race, class, generation and geography. Authoritarianism thrives on disengagement and disconnection.
One way to remain connected and energized is recognizing that this moment of transition is also an opportunity to transform our democracy. We can envision the future we want, untethered from the limitations of the current moment. Then, from the vantage point of this future, assuming it has been achieved, we can ask ourselves what we did today to make that vision a reality. This perspective avoids asking 'what should we do', which limits us to thinking within our current circumstances, instead asking 'what did we do', which allows us to think beyond our current challenges and limitations and instead create new opportunities and possibilities.
From the vantage point of the future, we can ask: where can I connect today? Where can I act today? What kind of change agent am I willing to be today to create the future I envision?
Here are some ideas:
We can engage those directly affected by injustice in the decisions that shape their lives. We must pay attention to who is thriving – and who isn't – in our institutions, and do the hard work of reimagining our institutions and systems. That is democracy in action.
One model comes from two Columbia Law students engaging high schoolers in Harlem and Queens to learn how local government works – a first step toward civic participation and transformation. Another comes from the artist-activist Tonika Johnson's Folded Map project, which paired Black South Side Chicago residents with their white North Side 'map twins' to explore stark neighborhood inequities. The project fostered real relationships, cross-racial learning and grassroots coalitions, while exposing the systemic racism behind dramatic disparities in infrastructure and investment.
There is work happening under the radar, too. On campuses where formal DEI efforts have been banned or gutted, faculty and staff are creating informal coalitions to sustain equity-focused collaboration and resist institutional amnesia. In several states, even court systems are taking action, building partnerships between judges, lawyers and communities to address racial disparities in access to justice.
Sometimes the opportunity for transformation comes in a policy window. In Indianapolis, the state's plan to rebuild a major highway became a chance for the Rethink Coalition to shift the conversation – from road engineering to community renewal. Their vision? A process and outcome centered on repairing the harm done to historically Black neighborhoods when the highway was first built. But what made that vision powerful was not just the idea, it was the strategy. Rethink helped put tools, data and technical expertise directly into the hands of community members so they could fully engage in reshaping the project. By democratizing access to planning knowledge, they ensured that residents were not just consulted, but empowered to lead. That's what it means to build toward the future now.
This is the kind of work that keeps us grounded in radical hope – a belief in the possibility of transformation against the odds. It is the practice of democracy, not just its theory. And it's available to all of us.
As the attacks grow louder, more coordinated, more entrenched, we must be even more committed to acting where we are – with whoever we can – to not only defend the fragile, unfinished project of building a multiracial democracy, but to take the time to dream about what our more robust democracy would look like, and then to take the next best step in that direction, undeterred by the current moment.
If enough of us engage – across differences and at every level – these efforts can add up to a reimagined nation. One that finally lives up to its promises. One that, someday soon, we can celebrate without contradiction.

We don't want ‘disgusting' sex traffickers in our prison, say Ghislaine Maxwell's fellow inmates
Ghislaine's Maxwell's arrival at a minimum-security prison in Texas has provoked anger among her fellow inmates. A prisoner at Federal Prison Camp (FPC) Bryan told The Telegraph she was 'disgusted' by Maxwell's transfer and that her feelings were widely shared by other inmates at the facility. Maxwell, the British socialite and former girlfriend of Jeffrey Epstein, was quietly moved to the prison camp 100 miles outside Houston, Texas, this week from a stricter low-security prison in Tallahassee, Florida. Her new prison mostly houses inmates convicted of 'white-collar' crimes and low-level offences, and they are said to be angry that Maxwell is being held among them. Maxwell is serving a 20-year sentence for procuring underage girls for the late financier and convicted paedophile, who took his own life in prison in 2019. Julie Howell, 44, who is serving a one-year sentence for theft, told The Telegraph that 'every inmate I've heard from is upset she's here'. 'This facility is supposed to house non-violent offenders,' she added. 'Human trafficking is a violent crime.' Inmates at minimum-security institutions, also known as FPCs, benefit from low prison guard-to-inmate ratio and limited-to-no perimeter fencing. It is the same prison facility where Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of Theranos, a fraudulent blood-testing company, is serving an 11-year sentence. It also allows inmates to play with puppies as part of a scheme to train dogs to become service animals. Upon Maxwell's arrival at the facility, prisoners were allegedly locked down and had the blinds shut in an apparent effort to shield her from view. The transfer comes a week after she was interviewed by Todd Blanche, Donald Trump 's deputy attorney general, leading to intense speculation that some sort of deal has been cut. Mr Trump has come under pressure in recent weeks to release all information related to Epstein, after the Department of Justice and FBI concluded that he died by suicide and did not possess a 'client list'. During a nine-hour interrogation with Mr Blanche, Maxwell was allegedly grilled about Epstein's connections to Bill Clinton, the Duke of York and Bill Gates, as well several other billionaires, according to the Daily Mail. Maxwell's legal team have said she is willing to testify before Congress in exchange for a presidential pardon or having her sentence commuted – a possibility Mr Trump has not ruled out. Inmates at FPC Bryan are worried about their own safety, given the widespread threats against Maxwell and lack of tight security on the prison grounds. Howell said: 'We have heard there are threats against her life and many of us are worried about our own safety because she's here.' Her comments will only fuel concern that could be targeted at the facility, preventing her testimony about Epstein from ever seeing the light of day. Maxwell was allegedly moved under the cover of darkness because she had been 'bombarded' with death threats from rapists who accused her of being a 'snitch', according to the Mail on Sunday. A source told the newspaper: 'As soon as Ghislaine spoke to the government she was considered a snitch by other inmates at Tallahassee. There were very real and very credible threats on her life. 'There were real fears inside Tallahassee that they could not guarantee her safety, which is why she was moved.' Maxwell 'could be a flight risk' Howell, who self-surrendered in July to serve her sentence at FPC Bryan, has a daughter who was trafficked as a teenager. In an email sent from prison about Maxwell's transfer, she wrote: 'I am honestly shocked she was moved to a federal prison camp with her history and charges.' The married mother-of-four said that her daughter was repeatedly trafficked from the age of 17, leading to her being 'beaten, choked and eventually shot'. Her daughter also allegedly became pregnant as a result and Howell said she has since adopted the child. The former professor, who worked in children's education for 22 years, said she helped the FBI and local law enforcement agencies track down the perpetrators, who are now serving federal prison sentences of more than 20 years. 'That incident changed the trajectory of my daughter's life, as well as mine,' she said. Howell said that the circumstances surrounding her daughter being shot provoked her mental health spiral and addiction to gambling, which she funded by resorting to theft. In January, she pleaded guilty to stealing almost $1m from Tarleton State University, her former employer, between 2022 and 2024. She was sentenced to one year in prison in June. Howell said: 'I don't blame anyone else for the actions that brought me to FPC Bryan, but I can definitely say that the circumstances that surrounded my daughter being shot were what sparked my spiral and addiction to gambling to escape my reality. 'Having Ms Maxwell here triggered all of those feelings.' Howell also warned that Maxwell could be a flight risk, given her previous efforts to avoid detection prior to her arrest. She said: 'This is a camp you can literally walk out of. I don't care how many people she turns in, it doesn't take away from her actions. 'As a mother of a sex-trafficking victim, I'm absolutely disgusted she's in this facility. Regardless of her reasoning, I don't think she belongs here.'

Fighter jets were scrambled to President Donald Trump 's New Jersey golf course on Sunday when a rogue aircraft breached the temporary flight restriction zone. The unidentified pilot flew into the airspace above the Trump National Golf Club Bedminster at around 2.50pm and was quickly escorted out of the area by North American Aerospace Defense Command jets, the agency announced. It had to use flares to draw the pilot's attention, but NORAD assured the public the flares 'are employed with the highest regard for the safety of the intercepted aircraft and people on the ground.' The flares also burn out quickly and completely, so there is no danger to those on the ground. The Sunday afternoon incursion marked the second of the day, after three other unauthorized incursions occurred the day before. By Sunday night, NORAD announced that the total number of unauthorized flight incursions while President Trump was spending the weekend at his New Jersey club rose to seven. Officials are now urging pilots to be more careful and to better plan out their trips as it does not appear the pilots had nefarious intentions in breaching the secure airspace. 'General aviation pilots are reminded to verify all Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Notice to Airmen and fly informed before every flight,' NORAD urged. 'All pilots must familiarize themselves with updates to restricted airspace, including reviewing new and existing FAA NOTAMs that impact their flight plans and activities. The president had spent his weekend at the Bedminster golf club, and returned to the White House late Sunday night. Despite the security breaches, Trump seemed to be in a good mood later in the day as he found out that actress Sydney Sweeny is a registered Republican. Daily Mail asked the president for his reaction to Sweeney's surprise voter registration after he touched down in Allentown, Pennsylvania on Sunday, and the president didn't shy away from his excitement. 'Oh, now I love her ad,' Trump responded. 'You'd be surprised at how many people are Republican. That's one I wouldn't have known, but I'm glad you told me that,' he continued. 'If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic.' Daily Mail previously revealed that Sweeney registered with the Republican Party of Florida in Monroe County last June, according to public voter records. The reveal comes as Sweeney's controversial advertising campaign with American Eagle sparked intense backlash among liberals who accused it of subtly promoting white supremacy and eugenics. But the controversy led many to leap to Sweeney's defense, pointing out that the reference to 'great genes/ jeans' was a play on words about Sweeney's good looks and the denim line.
