The funky new model that made its international Debut in June 2024 is available in multiple powertrains, including full electric derivatives launched earlier in the year.
The company also revealed a new Grande Panda 4x4 concept model during the hybrid media drive, with exclusive details of dark red livery and an all-terrain drivetrain.
The newly debuted hybrid drivetrain is a front-wheel drive with a new 83kW turbocharged three-cylinder 1.2 l engine paired with a 21kW electric motor and a 48V lithium-ion battery.
An eDCT six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, regenerative braking and driving modes of e-launch, e-creeping and e-parking are available. The company doesn't share fuel consumption averages at this stage.
Designed in Italy at the Centro Stile in Turin, the modern interpretation of the iconic Panda is a cool urban car that measures 3.99m in length.
The car sits on the Stellantis 'Smart Car' platform, a flexible, multi-energy architecture designed to offer a wide range of cost-effective electric vehicles to compete with Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers.
It has enough room to carry five passengers and a 412 l boot. Smart storage solutions totalling 16 l to store loose items is integrated in the cabin. The exterior cues of a wedge-like profile are enhanced by retro PXL LED headlamps, cube-like taillights and blacked-out pillars.
Details such as 3D-branded 'Panda' lettering on the doors and 'Fiat' on the rear, a lenticular C-pillar graphic, and glossy black bezel are further stylistic touches.
Bright exterior colours finish the fun driving vibe, while a choice of trims — Pop, Icon and La Prima — offer customer personalisation. The Blu Tasmania colour scheme with bright yellow accents on the dashboard, infotainment area and as seat stitching energises the cabin.
Amenities include air-conditioning, digital clusters, electric parking brake, smartphone station, navigation, front parking sensors, rearview camera and wireless charging, depending on the model.
Three customisable upgrade packs including Tech, Style and Winter are also available. They introduce further items such as automatic climate control, 16-inch alloy wheels, roof bars, privacy glass, skid plates, heated seats, steering wheel and windshield.
The range-topping La Prima trim combines all packages, along with 17-inch alloy wheels, premium interior finishes, including BAMBOX Bamboo Fiber Tex that contains 33% of the natural fibres for the dashboard. Recycled beverage cartons are repurposed as blue plastic with a shimmering aluminium finish as touch point finishers.
Safety is taken care of by a comprehensive ADAS suite including cruise control, speed limiter, active safety brake, lane keeping assist, driver attention warning and open-door alerts. The La Prima trim boasts front sensors and a rearview camera.
Connectivity is supported with wireless smartphone mirroring, multiple USB-C ports and a wireless charging pad.
The initial Fiat Panda model debuted in 1980, and SA welcomed the second-generation car in 2003.
Stellantis SA confirms it has no plans to introduce the new Grande Panda models to this market, but the hybrid pricing starts at €19,000 (R386,000) for European customers.

China to offer childcare subsidies in bid to boost birth rate
China will give parents $500 per child under three annually to fight its shrinking population and declining birth rates. China's government will offer subsidies to parents to the tune of $500 per child under the age of three per year, Beijing's state media said Monday, as the world's second most populous nation faces a looming demographic crisis. The country's population has declined for three consecutive years, with United Nations demography models predicting it could fall from 1.4 billion today to 800 million by 2100. The nationwide subsidies apply retroactively from January 1, Beijing's state broadcaster CCTV said, citing a decision by the ruling Communist Party and the State Council, China's cabinet. 'This is a major nationwide policy aimed at improving public wellbeing,' CCTV said. 'It provides direct cash subsidies to families across the country, helping to reduce the burden of raising children,' it added. There were just 9.54 million births in China last year, half the number than in 2016, the year it ended its one-child policy, which was in place for more than three decades. Marriage rates are also at record low levels, with many young couples put off having babies by high child-rearing costs and career concerns. 'Very costly' Parents in Beijing welcomed the fresh subsidies, but said more needed to be offered for them to consider having extra children. 'For young couples who just got married and already have a baby, it might actually encourage them to consider having a second child,' Wang Xue, a mother to a nine-year-old son, told AFP. 'After all, the subsidy does help ease their burdens… and also offers some psychological comfort,' Wang said. But she said the new measures would not be enough to convince her to have a second child. 'Groundwork for the future' While analysts said the subsidies were a step in the right direction, they warned that the new measures alone would not reverse China's population decline, nor boost its domestic spending slump. 'It is encouraging that the government finally moved to use fiscal subsidies to boost fertility,' said Zhiwei Zhang, president and chief economist at Pinpoint Asset Management. It also showed the government recognised the 'serious challenge' that low fertility rates posed for the economy, Zhang added. In Shenyang, in northeastern Liaoning province, local authorities give families who have a third child 500 yuan per month until the child turns three. More than 20 provincial-level administrations in the country now offer childcare subsidies, according to official data. Shaolin Temple's ‘CEO monk' probed for embezzlement, relations with women
Shi Yongxin, 59, previously a member of China's parliament, is 'suspected of criminal offences, misappropriating and embezzling project funds and the temple's assets,' the temple said in a statement, adding Shi is under joint investigation by multiple agencies. Shi could not immediately be reached for comment. The temple did not answer a call from Reuters. Nicknamed the 'CEO monk' and known for his commercial ambitions, Shi sought to capitalise on the monastery's fame during his decades-long tenure at Shaolin Temple, the fabled birthplace of kung fu and the setting for many martial arts films in the central Chinese province of Henan. Shi has 'seriously violated Buddhist precepts, maintained improper relationships with multiple women over a long period of time' and fathered at least one 'illegitimate' child, the temple said in its statement released on its social media account on Sunday. In a statement issued on Monday, the state-supervised Buddhist Association of China said it approved the revoking of Shi's ordination certificate, adding that his 'behaviours are extremely deplorable in nature, have seriously damaged the reputation of the Buddhist community and tarnished the image of monks.' In 2015, a letter circulated online accusing Shi of misconduct and improper sexual relations. The temple denied the allegations at the time. Shi, known as Liu Yingcheng before he became a monk in 1981, has overseen the temple since 1987 and became its abbot in 1999, the temple's website showed. In 2008, the temple opened an online store, offering a range of goods including shoes, tea, T-shirts, and a kung fu instruction manual for 9,999 yuan ($1,395). Its business ventures over the years also included book publishing, medicine, kung fu performances, film production, asset management and real estate. Shi posted daily on his social media account on Weibo with more than 882,000 followers. Shi was a delegate of China's rubber-stamp parliament, the National People's Congress, for around two decades until 2018. He has also been deputy head of China's Buddhist association. Several US executives will visit China this week: sources
A high-level delegation of American executives will travel to China this week to meet senior Chinese officials in a trip organised by the US-China Business Council (USCBC), two sources with knowledge of the visit told Reuters on Monday. The visit coincides with the latest round of US-China trade negotiations in Sweden, where China's vice premier He Lifeng is meeting US officials from July 27 to 30 for a new round of economic and trade talks. The delegation will be led by FedEx CEO Rajesh Subramaniam, the council's board chair, one source briefed on the trip said. The South China Morning Post first reported the visit on Sunday, saying executives from firms including Boeing would be part of the delegation. Reuters could not confirm other CEO members of the delegation or which Chinese officials they would meet. Boeing declined to comment on the trip and deferred to USCBC. The US government was not involved in the organisation of the visit, one source said. The trip comes as Beijing and Washington work towards a summit between the two countries' leaders later this year, probably around the time of the Apec forum in South Korea from October 26 to November 1, sources previously told Reuters. The USCBC did not respond immediately to a request for comment. The business lobby organised similar visits to China by American CEO delegations in 2023 and 2024. The 2024 trip, also led by Subramaniam, included meetings with He and foreign minister Wang Yi, where executives discussed issues including market access. China faces an August 12 deadline to reach a durable deal with the White House or risk higher US tariffs. US officials are likely to extend the deadline by another 90 days as the two sides work towards a more comprehensive deal. An extension would prevent further escalation and help create conditions for a potential meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
