3 mistakes dog owners are making when trying to get their pets to sleep

Daily Record2 days ago
Renee Patience, founder of Paws Academy, has shared her three top tips for settling a puppy, creating the perfect bedtime routine to enable your pet sleep through the night
If your four-legged friend is keeping you awake at night, a dog training expert might have just the answer you've been searching for. Renee Patience, a behavioural specialist, has revealed her essential pet advice through a social media guide.

The Paws Academy founder reckons numerous dog owners are making three crucial errors when it comes to bedtime routines. "Here are the top three mistakes I see every week that make bedtime harder than it needs to be," she wrote on TikTok. "These fixes are simple but game-changing. Puppy sleep training doesn't have to be complicated."

Renee kicked off her video by explaining her guidance will help anyone with a young dog who is "absolutely desperate" for a proper night's rest.

Location
Allowing your puppy to nap wherever it fancies could be precisely where you're going astray, Renee outlined in her opening point. "It's subtle, but it does matter," she explained.
"So if your puppy naps under the table, on the sofa or in your arms, they're not learning that bed or the crate etc is the place to fully switch off."

Renee noted that gradually, this will make it more challenging for your dog to settle in the area you want them to. To tackle the issue, when your pet does drift off away from their bed, you should carefully transfer them to their bed or crate before they enter deep sleep.
"This helps them associate the space with real rest," she added.
Cues
Employing commands inconsistently could be making things harder for yourself, Renee went on to explain. "If you're saying 'settle' one night, 'bed' the following night and 'sleepy time' after that, how does your puppy know what you're asking them to do?" Renee asked her followers.

Rather than this approach, the specialist recommends selecting one command and maintaining consistency with it, whilst always combining it with the identical routine and location. "The puppy will thrive on repetition - not guesswork," Renee added.

Excitement
Renee concluded her video by highlighting that her third point is "easy to overlook". She clarified that if your pup thinks bedtime signals cuddle time, toys or a final play session, they won't be inclined to calm down.

"So we want to create a wind down routine that is the same every night," Renee said. "Toilet, short calm moment, into their bed or crate then treat - this repetition builds predictability and predictability helps them to settle."
Responding in the comments, one TikTok user enquired: "Should they have chewing toys in the crate? The first couple of days it helped him come down but now he plays in the crate during the night."
Renee answered: "Great question. Chew toys can be helpful if they encourage your puppy to settle, especially in the early days when they are still adjusting. But if he's waking up and getting playful in the middle of the night, it might be better to remove them once he's asleep.
"The goal is to help him associate the crate with calm rest, not playtime."

Sharon Osbourne's furious X Factor outburst at 'pensioner' who slammed Ozzy

Sharon Osbourne once revealed she hilariously launched a pen at a pensioner who attempted to speak badly of her husband Ozzy while she was on The X Factor Sharon Osbourne once declared war on a "pensioner" who made the decision to have a go at her late husband, Ozzy. Sharon, 72, has never been one to mince her words and during an interview about her return to The X Factor, the music manager opened up about the interaction with the man who bravely attempted to say negative things about her husband Ozzy. ‌ In 2013, Sharon left the showbiz industry in shock when she returned to the talent show just six years after she dramatically left the programme. But in true Mrs O style, she didn't hold back when she spoke about one contestant. ‌ Speaking on Alan Carr's Chatty Man about the incident, the fiery redhead exclaimed: "I did too!" when asked if it was true she'd launched a pen at the contestant. "And it should have been a knife, really!" she went on to add. It comes after Sharon Osbourne breaks down in tears at Ozzy's funeral in heartbreaking scenes. ‌ When asked why she'd launched the pen, Sharon explained: "This old bloke comes in and starts slagging my old man, so I'm like 'Here, what can I throw at you?' so I'm like 'You can f**k off', threw a pen at him. You little f***er!" But when Alan asked why somebody would attempt to disrespect Ozzy in front of Sharon, she fumed: "They know what they're going to get. How dare he! I'm nearly a pensioner, so f**k him!" ‌ The clip, which has resurfaced on TikTok, has racked up an impressive 58,000 views and was flooded with comments, with many laughing over Sharon's quick wit. "Sharon Osbourne. What a woman," said one. A second went on to write: "Absolute brilliance, love Sharon." "I want their marriage when I'm older and I won't settle for less," said another. The resurfacing of the clip comes just hours after Sharon sadly buried Ozzy. In keeping with the rockstar's wishes, he was buried in the grounds of his sprawling family home, where he shared many happy memories with Sharon, and where he spent his final weeks. ‌ The funeral followed an emotionally-charged day in Birmingham, that saw the Prince of Darkness made one final trip through his home city. Thousands of fans lined the streets to pay their respects and say goodbye as a procession led by Ozzy's hearse travelled from the Aston Villa football ground through the city centre. In moving scenes, the procession stopped outside the Black Sabbath bridge, where the frontman's wife and children stepped out of their cars to lay down roses wrapped in black paper among the sea of tributes left by fans. ‌ Ozzy's widow, Sharon, was seen for the first time since his death and was overcome by emotion as she took in the outpouring of love for her husband. As she broke down in tears, Sharon was comforted by children Jack, Kelly, and Aimee. The grandchildren of Sharon and Ozzy were also close by for the family moment. Last week, the Osbourne family announced that Ozzy had died at the age of 76, just days after he appeared on stage at his farewell Back to the Beginning concert, in his beloved hometown of Birmingham. In a statement, the Osbourne family, including Kelly and Sharon, had said: "It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. "He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis."

Scotland's flagship indie beer festival returns to Glasgow with hundreds of beers to try

The festival returns to Glasgow for the third year in a row next month. Scotland's largest celebration of independently brewed beer is set to return to Glasgow this September. Indie Beer Scotland will bring more than a hundred locally made beers, ciders and spirits to the Clyde Rooms at Edmiston House. ‌ Running from Friday 5 to Saturday 6, September, 2025, the event marks its third year in Glasgow following a successful debut in Edinburgh in 2022. ‌ Organised by brewers from the Society of Independent Brewers and Associates (SIBA), the not-for-profit group behind the UK-wide Indie Beer campaign, the festival is expected to draw crowds eager to support genuinely independent producers. ‌ This year's festival will be split into three sessions across the weekend, with each offering over 100 different cask and keg beers from across Scotland. Alongside the beer, festivalgoers can enjoy cider and spirits from small-scale Scottish producers, all under one roof. ‌ One of the organisers, Ian McGrath of Beath Brewing, says Glasgow has become a key location in the UK's growing independent beer movement. 'We big have plans for Indie Beer festivals across the UK in 2026 but it all started right here in Scotland," he said. "We are hugely proud to be the flagship event for the Indie Beer campaign and to be the festival that showcases the largest number of Scottish beers from independent breweries available anywhere. ‌ 'No big brands, no faux-craft, just great beer from genuinely independent Scottish brewers.' In addition to championing local producers, Indie Beer Scotland has built a reputation for offering quality drinks at fair prices. ‌ Festival organisers have confirmed that all 2024 pricing will be frozen, with a wide range of beers up to 4.5% ABV available for just £4 a pint. 'We are really proud to offer great value for money and to enable everyone to sample the huge range of cask ales, keg beers and lagers available at Indie Beer Scotland, so have once again frozen our prices, with all beers up to 4.5% available for just £4 a pint,' McGrath added. From crisp lagers and light pale ales to robust scotch ales and rich barrel-aged stouts pushing 10% ABV or more, the selection reflects the diversity of Scotland's independent brewing scene. ‌ The festival promises something for every taste, with both session-strength beers and complex, high-ABV styles on offer.
