'Overpriced' Springbok tickets blamed for 'empty' DHL Stadium
South Africans are blaming the exorbitant ticket prices for Springboks games for scenes of an 'empty' DHL Stadium during the team's clash against the Barbarians on Saturday, 28 June.
The South African national rugby team played its first game, which it won 54- 7, against the British squad.
It marks the first of many scheduled games to be played on home soil.
On social media, rugby fans who watched from home and those who watched the game live in action have commented about empty seating at the cold and wet DHL Stadium in Cape Town.
For many, the 'overpriced' tickets on sale were to blame for the disappointing scenes.
TikTok user @ninajanecarterr posted: 'They rugby brings the nation together, but half the nation couldnt even afford to be there.'
A second – @coachdullah – posted: 'When playing home matches, SARU should consider the average South African budget. Yes, the Springboks are world champs, but don't make it unaffordable?'
A third @geets.xo added: 'These prices are outrageous. There are so many who want to go, but simply can't afford to'. @ninajanecarterr all these empty seats and for WHAAATT 🙂 hoping this was a rude awakening for whoever decided on the prices of those tickets?! #springboks #barbarians ♬ original sound – Daiy Abrahams TDM
Other Springbok fans excitedly revealed how they managed to scoop high-end tickets for a fraction of the price on match day.
TikTok user @drinkandderive0 posted: 'Got them 2 hours before the game! They were greedy with the initial price'. @drinkandderive0 got them 2 hours before the game too. They were greedy with that initial price springboks #saru #barbarians #dhlstadium ♬ Jet2 Advert – ✈️A7-BBH | MAN 🇬🇧
It's not the first time Springbok fans have complained about the price of test match tickets at the DHL Stadium.
But why are they so expensive?
According to stadium management, this is because of the venues… Modern, world-class features
Limited availability and high demand
Cape Town is being hailed as a top tourist destination

No DNA, just RSA: Aldrich Potgieter is a PGA Tour winner!
Aldrich Potgieter of South Africa celebrates winning the Rocket Classic for his first PGA Tour title. Image: Raj Mehta / AFP South Africa's Aldrich Potgieter sank a birdie putt from just inside 18 feet on the fifth playoff hole to win the Rocket Classic for his first PGA Tour title. ADVERTISEMENT The 20-year-old grabbed the victory in just his 20th PGA start, beating American Max Greyserman in the hour-long playoff drama after American Chris Kirk had been eliminated on the second extra hole. The playoff had returned to the par-three 15th at Detroit golf Club for the second time in the playoff when Potgieter, who had missed winning putts on the two prior extra holes, sank the winning putt after Greyserman missed a 34-foot birdie putt. 'Happy to walk away a winner' 'Finally got one to the hole and saw the ball roll end over end and just knew it was going to go in,' Aldrich Potgieter said. 'I'm just happy to walk away as a winner.' ADVERTISEMENT Greyserman and Kirk each shot 67 and 54-hole leader Potgieter fired a 69 to finish deadlocked after 72 holes on 22-under 266. Potgieter made two bogeys in the first five holes but battled back with birdies on three of the last six holes and a clutch five-foot par putt at 18 to make the playoff. 'It was definitely a tough day,' Potgieter said. 'The start didn't go my way. I struggled to make putts, left a lot short.' All three birdied the first playoff hole, the par-four 18th, and at the first extra playing of the 15th, all three missed their birdie putts but Kirk missed his par effort from just inside four feet to drop out. 'Just really disappointed right now,' six-time PGA winner Kirk said. 'I'm really happy with how I played. Just mis-read that last putt.' Potgieter and Greyserman both parred the par-four 16th and birdied the par-five 14th to set up the close, which made Aldrich Potgieter the youngest South African to win on the PGA Tour. 'Big thanks to my family and friends, coaches and everyone who has been involved to get me to this point,' Potgieter said, noting his family's sacrifice for his career. 'We had to give up a lot, moving to Australia, moving back. Emigrating is definitely not the easiest thing. Coming alone at the start of my career to the States and giving it a grind – having my dad here has helped so much.' 'Good shots' Greyserman, twice a PGA runner-up last year, will have to wait longer for a breakthrough triumph. 'Unfortunately I didn't get the job done,' he said. 'I thought I hit a lot of good shots down the stretch. Very pleased with how I handled myself down the stretch. 'Putts just didn't drop but I hit a lot of good putts. This one is going to sting for a little bit but I'll have to get back to work.' Potgieter's best prior PGA finish was a Mexico Open playoff loss to American Brian Campbell in February. Americans Michael Thorbjornsen and Jake Knapp shared fourth on 267. Lloyd Harris aims for Wimbledon redemption after early French Open exit
South Africa's Lloyd Harris will face Zizou Bergs of Belgium in the Wimbledon first round on Monday as he continues his comeback from injury. Photo: AFP South Africa's top-ranked tennis player, Lloyd Harris will be hoping to make it past the first round at Wimbledon, after falling at the first hurdle at the recent French Open. The SA tennis ace, whose promising career has been blighted by injury, will face Zizou Bergs of Belgium in Monday's first round. Harris, who was the only South African in the men's singles draw of the French Open, as he is at Wimbledon, was beaten 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the first round by No15 seed Andrey Rublev at Roland Garros. Zizou is also ranked higher than him at Wimbledon, but does not have the pedigree of the South African, who reached the quarterfinals of the US Open in 2021. The former world No 31 is making his way back up the rankings after an extended absence due to injury. Wrist surgery in 2022 was followed by back surgery late last year, which derailed his progress. 'It's been tough, but for me it's all about being healthy. Every match I get being injury free is a mega win for me,' he told in the build-up to the clay court Grand Slam. Featuring in back-to-back Grand Slam main draws will be regarded as steady progress by the 28-year-old Capetonian. Harris reached the second round at Wimbledon last year, where he pushed rising US star Ben Shelton before losing in five sets. If he can come close to replicating that form, he can book a place in the second round again. Zizou will also fancy his chances of progressing, after reaching the final of the tour-level Libema Open on grass in the Netherlands recently.

All Blacks lose injured prop for France Test series
New Zealand prop Tamaiti Williams was on Monday ruled out of the three-Test series against France with a knee injury that will require surgery. It is the second setback for the All Blacks in a matter of days, with rising back-row star Wallace Sititi also sidelined and needing an operation for an ankle issue. Williams sustained a torn meniscus during the recent Super Rugby final, where his team, the Crusaders, beat the Chiefs. 'Scans have revealed the tear,' New Zealand Rugby said. 'Assessment by a surgeon this morning has confirmed surgery will be required.' George Bower has been brought into the squad to replace him. New Zealand face France in Dunedin, Wellington and Hamilton, with the first Test on July 5.
