MPI e-Journal to be launched in conjunction with M'sian Journalism Night 2025
MPI chief executive officer Ainol Amriz Ismail said that the e-Journal, published for the first time, aims to empower scientific writing among journalists, particularly related to research in the fields of journalism, media and communication.
"This is yet another effort by the MPI to promote a culture of knowledge and strengthen the national journalism landscape through an academic approach," he said in a statement Thursday (June 19).
The prestigious awards ceremony, organised by the MPI, will also be graced by nearly 1,000 guests, including prominent journalists, senior editors, reporters, media practitioners, and corporate partners from across the country.
PETRONAS, as the main sponsor, will also be represented by the company's senior management at the event, which will witness the presentation of the MPI-PETRONAS Malaysia Journalism Awards 2024 involving 23 categories.
Ainol Amriz said that MPI will also feature a special exhibition in the main hall corridor showcasing the history of the institution and the evolution of the Malaysian Journalism Awards since its inception.
"This ceremony not only recognises the best works of the country's journalists but also elevates the contribution of journalism as a driver of societal and national progress," he said.
The MPI-PETRONAS Malaysian Journalism Awards 2024 offers a total prize value of RM450,000, with the gold winner taking home a trophy, certificate and cash, while the silver and bronze winners receive a certificate and cash.
This year, the MPI received 549 entries from 58 media organisations across the country, including Sabah and Sarawak, reflecting an increased interest in producing high-quality and impactful works.
The MPI also accepts nominations for three special categories that recognise the contributions of journalists throughout their careers.
The winners' results will be displayed according to the award presentation segments after being officially announced on Friday night. - Bernama

Hold thorough studies before rolling out policies, Abang Jo's aide tells govt
Putrajaya decided last week to exempt oranges, apples, mandarin oranges and dates from the expanded SST, which comes into effect tomorrow. (Envato Elements pic) PETALING JAYA : An aide to Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg has urged the federal government to conduct thorough studies and consultations with stakeholders before rolling out policies. Kho Teck Wan of the Sarawak United People's Party cited the expanded sales and service tax (SST) and e-invoicing for businesses as key policies that should have seen more studies and engagements held. She said last-minute changes to such major policies reflected a lack of engagement with stakeholders, The Borneo Post reported. While Kho welcomed the exemption of e-invoicing for businesses earning RM500,000 and below annually, she said this came at the last minute. 'The announcement was made weeks before the implementation, when most small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) already made the necessary changes, spent money on training, and purchased software in preparation for the e-invoice implementation. 'Now that the policy has suddenly changed, their investments have gone to waste. Their frustration and helplessness are understandable,' she said. The Inland Revenue Board has postponed the implementation of e-invoicing for businesses with under RM5 million in annual revenue to 2026, while exempting those earning less than RM500,000 a year. Businesses earning RM500,000 to RM25 million were initially required to file e-invoices from July 1 before the exemption and postponement was announced earlier this month. For the expanded SST, which comes into effect tomorrow, Putrajaya decided last week to exempt oranges, apples, mandarin oranges and dates, citing public feedback. The finance ministry also decided not to include beauty services like manicures, pedicures, facials and hairdressing, when an 8% service tax was set to be imposed for such services exceeding RM500,000 in a 12-month period.

E-hailing drivers association welcomes govt move to suspend InDrive, Maxim
ALOR STAR: The Northern e-Hailing Drivers Association (NeHDA) has welcomed the government's decision to suspend the operations of two foreign e-hailing companies, Maxim and InDrive, effective July 24. Its chairman Zabidi Bahador said the move by the Transport Ministry and the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) was a critical step towards upholding regulatory compliance within the e-hailing industry. He said the two companies' failure to adhere to requirements, such as obtaining a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) licence and an E-hailing Vehicle Permit (EVP), had compromised user safety and tarnished the integrity of the local transport sector. "This decisive action ensures a level playing field for local e-hailing providers and helps safeguard drivers' income through more efficient enforcement on e-hailing operators and driver communities," he said in a statement today. Zabidi also warned against any reversal of the directive, saying it would undermine the credibility of enforcement agencies and be unfair to local companies that had complied with existing regulations. "We urge the ministry to remain firm and resist external pressure. Priority must be given to user safety, fairness for local drivers, and upholding the rule of law," he added. He said that NeHDA remains committed to advocating for a fair, safe, and competitive e-hailing ecosystem for all stakeholders. On May 9, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said that Russian-based platforms InDrive and Maxim had been ordered to cease operations in Malaysia by July 24 for violating local transport regulations. The directive followed calls from the Malaysian P-Hailing Delivery Association, which claimed both platforms continued to operate without meeting the requirements of the Land Public Transport Act 2010 (Act 715).
