Padres erase 4-run deficit, earn walk-off win over Mets

Reuters3 days ago
July 29 - Elias Diaz's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning Monday night lifted the San Diego Padres to a wild 7-6 win over the visiting New York Mets.
Xander Bogaerts started the inning with a leadoff single off Gregory Soto (0-3). Pinch hitter Jose Iglesias bunted, and Soto tried to force Bogaerts at second but threw wide of the bag. Jake Cronenworth bunted into a fielder's choice, forcing Bogaerts at third.
After Bryce Johnson looked at a third strike, Diaz lined a 1-2 pitch to left-center and Iglesias beat Brandon Nimmo's throw home, ending New York's seven-game winning streak.
Robert Suarez (3-4) got the win despite blowing the save when Ronny Mauricio cracked a one-out solo homer in the top of the ninth to tie the game.
San Diego trailed 5-1 after Mark Vientos drilled a two-out grand slam off Dylan Cease in the fifth, but the Padres rallied. Luis Arraez's sixth homer of the year crashed off the right field foul pole and highlighted a five-run bottom of the fifth inning that saw 11 men hit against Mets starter Frankie Montas and reliever Huascar Brazoban.
After Arraez belted a two-run homer and San Diego added two more hits, Brazoban got himself into trouble when he didn't cover the bag in time on Cronenworth's two-out grounder down the line that first baseman Pete Alonso smothered. That allowed Cronenworth to beat the play for an infield single that scored Manny Machado, cutting New York's lead to 5-4.
Johnson followed with an RBI single to right that plated Bogaerts to even the score, and Diaz delivered a run-scoring single to left-center.
Cease gave up five runs on five hits and five walks in 4 2/3 innings, striking out nine. Montas left after 4 1/3 innings, permitting eight hits and five runs while walking two and fanning three.
Brett Baty gave New York a 1-0 lead in the second on a sacrifice fly to left that scored Jeff McNeil. San Diego equalized in the third on a two-out RBI single by Bogaerts, scoring Machado.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was ejected in the top of the third for arguing after Juan Soto was called out on strikes by plate umpire Emil Jimenez.

Tyreek Hill breaks his silence on Tua Tagovailoa's brutal scolding after QB hinted at Dolphins civil war

Tyreek Hill has spoken out on Miami Dolphins teammate Tua Tagovailoa 's brutally honest verdict on the state of the team's relationship with the wide receiver. Hill's relationship with the Dolphins was left in contentious shape throughout the offseason after he repeatedly hinted at a move out of Miami with thinly-veiled jibes at the team and his teammates. And Tagovailoa made sure Hill, who is also in the midst of a bitter divorce from wife Keeta Vaccaro, knew he had a long way to go to repair the bridges he'd burned. Yet, Hill, who remained in South Florida this offseason despite his pushes for a trade, wasn't disheartened by his signal caller's apparent scolding. 'I think Tua's comments were needed,' the wideout admitted at Dolphins' training Friday. 'He's obviously the leader of our team. He sets the standard. 'I'm just trying to be the best teammate and best version of myself for this team [that] I can be. Coming out here everyday and busting my tail in practice. I think it's important I want to be able to leave a legacy.' While the Dolphins welcomed Hill back to training last week, Tagovailoa, who has been named to President Donald Trump's committee of professional athletes to oversee the reinstatement of the Presidential Fitness Test, made it clear all was not forgiven. 'When you say something like that you don't just come back with "My bad." You gotta work that relationship up. He is working on himself,' Tagovailoa told reporters when asked about Hill's fiery comments. The wideout appeared to take himself out the team's final game of the 2024 season against the New York Jets , with head coach Mike McDaniel then denying Hill's claim that he was hurt and couldn't play. Then, speaking with reporters after the game, Hill was visibly unhappy at missing the postseason. 'This is my first time I haven't been in the playoffs, man,' Hill said. 'So I just got to do what's best for me and my family. 'I'm opening the door. I'm out bro. It was great playing here, but at the end of the day I gotta do what's best for my career because I'm too much of a competitor to be just out there.' In addition to his cryptic Week 18 message, Hill courted further controversy when he appeared to take a swipe at Tagovailoa himself. The receiver was asked by a fan on social media to rank the best quarterbacks in the league and he passed over his own signal caller, who missed parts of the 2024 season after suffering another concussion. The quarterback made it clear that Hill had to work to repair his relationships with the team Hill's picks were Ravens star Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen of the Bills, Chiefs icon Patrick Mahomes , Buccaneers star Baker Mayfield and Bengals signal caller Joe Burrow. Hill insisted his selections were in no particular order but his omission of Tagovailoa nevertheless saw the clip go viral. His repeated digs fueled speculation that the receiver could force his way out of the 305 but general manager Chris Grier insisted in April that the Dolphins have no intention of trading Hill. 'That is not anything that we're pursuing,' Grier said. 'If someone wants to come and give me two first-round picks then we'd consider it. But, as of right now, it's not something we're considering.' While Hill's relationships in the NFL are a work in progress, the one with his estranged wife is seemingly beyond repair. Fitness entrepreneur Vaccaro filed for divorce on April 7 a day after cops responded to reports of an 'assault in progress' at the couple's luxury Miami condo. Hill hurled a laptop onto the floor and was 'aggressive and impulsive' according to Vaccaro's mother Alesia – but police determined that 'no crime was committed'. An astonishing 78 court documents have been submitted since then as the estranged couple bicker over spousal support and access to their seven-month-old daughter Capri. Vaccaro's lawyers took aim at Hill in an April 17 filing that claimed he had 'no sincere desire to spend time with the baby, to assume parental responsibilities … or to be personally involved with the baby'. The gridiron phenom's real objective, claimed attorneys Evan Marks and Carolyn West, was 'coercion and control'.

MLB All-Star Game awarded to Cubs in 2027

August 1 - The Chicago Cubs and Wrigley Field will host the 2027 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, commissioner Rob Manfred announced Friday. Manfred made his announcement at Wrigley Field with Cubs executive chairman Tom Ricketts, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, Hall of Fame member and eight-time All-Star Andre Dawson and two-time All-Star Shawon Dunston among those in attendance. The game will be played July 13, 2027, as the culmination of All-Star Week festivities. The 97th Midsummer Classic will be the fourth hosted at Wrigley Field. The American League won the previous meetings at Wrigley Field in 1947, 1962 and 1990. "I applaud the Ricketts family, the entire Cubs organization, the City of Chicago and the Chicago Sports Commission for presenting an impressive vision for 2027 All-Star Week," Manfred said. "The hard work put in to transform all of Wrigleyville into an outstanding destination deserves to be celebrated and shared on a national stage. "We look forward to bringing the Midsummer Classic back to historic Wrigley Field and working alongside the Cubs, city and state officials, and the local organizing group to bring an extraordinary experience to the baseball fans of Chicago." The 2026 contest will take place in Philadelphia to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. The Phillies' former home, Veterans Stadium, hosted the All-Star Game in 1976 to honor the nation's bicentennial. --Field Level Media

'Another reason I had to transition was that I wanted to have more kids. And I look at Adira, and I'm like, "Was it worth it?" I thought about it the other day. I was like, "Yeah, it was worth it."'
