The Picklr's West Allis indoor pickleball facility proposal advances
AT A GLANCE
The Picklr's request for a conditional use permit for its proposed West Allis location at 2550 S. 108th St. received an endorsement from a city panel.
The 30,000-square-foot, 10-court indoor pickleball facility would include a pro shop and other amenities.
The venue is expected to open this summer.
The Picklr's plans to bring indoor pickleball to West Allis advanced this week.
The city's Plan Commission on Wednesday recommended approval of a conditional use permit for the venue, planned at 2550 S. 108th St. Final approval of the permit is expected to be considered May 6 by the West Allis Common Council.
The 30,000-square-foot facility would take the place of a former Dunham's Sports store. The renovated building is planned to include 10 indoor pickleball courts, a pro shop, grab-and-go food and drink options and a private event area. It also would feature an enclosed community space for hosting events, according to Plan Commission documents.
The Picklr members have access to open play, league play and tournaments and have an option to enroll in private and semi-private lessons and clinics by certified trainers. The location will be open to the public and offer monthly and annual memberships as well as daily passes.
In addition to the conditional use permit, The Picklr would need to submit detailed site, landscaping and architectural plans for city review, said Jack Kovnesky, a West Allis city planner.
If the project advances, renovation of the interior for The Picklr is expected to take approximately 10 weeks, according to the documents. The venue could open this summer.
The new facility will give the Utah-based The Picklr three Wisconsin locations including one in the former Big Lots location at N78 W14511 Appleton Ave. in Menomonee Falls as well as a location in Ashwaubenon. The company plans to expand to eight locations in Wisconsin, including four to six in the Milwaukee area.
The redevelopment of large buildings into indoor pickleball facilities has become a trend in Southeast Wisconsin.
Ace Pickleball Club plans to open a 17-court facility in the former Pick 'n Save space at the Ruby Isle shopping center in Brookfield in August. Arizona-based Pickleball Kingdom opened its second Wisconsin location in a 60,000-square-foot former Multi-Color Corp. building in Menomonee Falls.
In addition, a 40,000-square-foot indoor soccer facility in South Milwaukee last fall was converted into a 12-court indoor pickleball facility known as Premier Pickleball Center.

Transfer special teamers named to preseason award watchlists
Transfers Mason Shipley and Jack Bouwmeester have earned spots on the Lou Groza and Ray Guy Award watchlists, respectively. Texas looking to upgrade special teams after wobbly 2024. Jack Bouwmeester has been named to the Ray Guy Award watch list 🤘@jackbouwie x @RayGuyAward Texas special teams was a huge talking point during the latter parts of last season. The Longhorns special teams unit was the worst in the playoff field, according to ESPN's SP+. It showed up in huge moments, with multiple missed kicks against Georgia in the SEC title and against Arizona State in the Peach Bowl. Sarkisian and company made a concerted effort to fix that problem in the portal, adding one of the top punters and kickers in the portal. Jack Bouwmeester comes in from Utah to take over the punting duties and Mason Shipley arrives from Texas State as the expected starting kicker for the Horns. Bouwmeester was placed on the Ray Guy Award watchlist on Friday. The Ray Guy Award recognizes the best punter in the country every year, an award that Michael Dickson won for Texas in 2017. Bouwmeester is coming off a year where he averaged 44.7 yards/punt a year ago at Utah, which would improve Texas' mark from 2024 by 15 yards/punt. Bouwmeester also dropped 23 of 60 punts a year ago inside the 20-yard line, with only 4 touchbacks. As for the kicking side, Mason Shipley was placed on the Lou Groza Award watchlist. Shipley was a spring portal addition from Texas State and is set to compete with Will Stone for the kicking duties this year. Shipley went 15-19 on FGs a year ago, not missing from inside 30 yards and 60-yarder. That comes off a year where he didn't miss a kick, going a perfect 15-15 in 2023. A year ago, Texas kickers went 16-25(64%) on FGs, so the addition of Shipley should improve that drastically. Mason Shipley has been named to the Lou Groza Award watch list 🤘@MasonShipley1 x @LouGrozaAward Texas has had winners of both the Ray Guy and Lou Groza award winners, but during the 2024 run, there were a number of times where special teams let them down. Bringing in Jack Bouwmeester and Mason Shipley should give a boost to the Longhorns special teams unit. Special teams is often the decider in National Championship runs and Texas went out and got two guys that figure to be pieces in those major moments in 2025.

Adult sports leagues are thriving in San Francisco
Team sports have become one of the fastest-growing types of exercise, with 20% of U.S. adults — up from 11% in 2020 — now saying they play them, according to a CivicScience survey shared with Axios. Why it matters: Adult sports are a booming business. Leagues that help you stay active and socially connected are expanding to meet demand. What we're hearing: "No one's going out of business because people aren't playing. In fact, it's the opposite," says California-based Galen Beers, executive director of the Sport & Social Industry Association. State of play: Volleyball (30% of total players), soccer (18%) and softball (15%) were the most popular sports last year, per preliminary data from the trade group, which counts roughly 150 leagues as members. Zoom in: There are several adult sports leagues in and around San Francisco, including Volo Sports, Play in the Bay, ZogSports and Play Recess. Some even find romance on the field. The big picture: In California and beyond, many adults don't get enough exercise — and plenty report feeling lonely, which brings its own serious health risks.

3 stock picks for second half of 2025
We are more than halfway through 2025. Hennion & Walsh chief investment officer Kevin Mahn shares three stocks he likes for the second half of the year. To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Market Domination Overtime here. Kevin, your uh, keep an eye on some key themes in the second half here. Let's run through these, my friend. Sure. We'll go through three of them, rapid fire, right? One, you talk about here, here's the first Kevin theme, the long game of artificial intelligence and besting. You call out Taiwan semi, which has that it's it's up around 20% this year. I know some on the street, they worry about tariff impact, demand being a risk this year, but walk me through how you think about that there. Taiwan Semiconductor, the largest dedicated chip foundry in the world with a 60% market share. You know who their largest client is? Nvidia. Everyone thinks Nvidia makes their own chips. They don't. Taiwan Semiconductor makes their chips. They just lifted their full year guidance by 30%, and we also know that Nvidia is looking to onshore the production of their chips into the US. Taiwan Semiconductor has a facility in Phoenix, Arizona. I've visited it. It's massive. Taiwan sector's got more room to grow. And into your point, I mean, it's customer list, it's just a who's who of tech. Uh, the other one I'd like to talk about, increased investment in defense and security. Why is that a theme? How do you want to play it? So start, we recently learned that NATO countries have committed to spend up to 5% of their GDP on defense spending over the next decade. We know that the European Union is going to spend $840 US billion US dollars over the next four years on defense spending. President Trump just included nearly $1 trillion in defense spending in the US budget. Where does that money go? Defense contractors. Here's an international play. We know international is outperforming US thus far this year, significantly. One name to play, BAE Systems, the largest defense contractor in Europe and one of the six prime contractors to the US Department of Defense. They pay a dividend about 1.7%. If you're looking to follow the money, the money's going into defense spending and BAE system is one way to play that. Would you want BAE instead of or in addition to a Lockheed Martin? In addition. In addition to. This gives you some geographical diversification. You mentioned North of Grumman. How about a company like Kratos Defense, which is building autonomous warfare so you don't have to put soldiers' lives at risk in war. So there's different ways to play where this money's going to ultimately be spent, but BAE gives you a little geographical diversification as well. Yeah. Last one I want, look to sources of power to help power your returns. Which what's the name there? How about Nisource? It's a multi-utility. It's one of the largest distributors of natural gas in our country with over 3 million customers in states such as Pennsylvania and even Virginia. Virginia which has become the capital data centers of the world. So now utilities have become a back door play into the AI revolution. And A Nisource has a dividend over 2%, nearly 3%. So you get the defensive characteristics of utility, the back door play into the AI revolution, and as the energy secretary says, natural gas is where we need to lean into right now to help power the AI revolution going forward in addition to nuclear and other alternative sources. Yes. I just you're in good company, by the way. Street agrees with you. I'm just looking at 80% of analysts covering this name say it's a buy, Kevin. Mhm.
