Girlguides announce 72 new badges in thrifting, rescuing bees and 'fandoms'

ITV News7 days ago
Girl guides will now be able to earn badges for getting a good night's sleep, sharing their "guiding sparkle" and being in a "fandom."
Girlguiding has unveiled 72 new badges its members can work towards, in one of the largest updates in the organisation's 115-year history.
The badges, which were co-designed by more than 20,000 girls and volunteers, will be rolled out to members aged four to 18, across Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers groups.
Different badges can be earned by different groups and range from skills-building challenges to encouraging wellness and knowing oneself.
Rainbows, who make up the youngest Girlguiding group, can earn a "Bee Rescuer" badge for helping the environment as well as a "My Thoughts" badge, which encourages children to share how they're feeling.
Brownies have reinvented the old "Hostess" badge, changing its name to "Celebrations", which is won by hosting a party and providing food and decorations.
While Guides are being encouraged to upcycle to earn a '"Thrift" badge and explore wellness through writing to earn the "Journaling" badge.
The new "Fandom" badge can be rewarded to Rangers who share their passion and connect with fellow fans of popstars like Taylor Swift or the Harry Potter series.
A youth panel made up of 30 girls aged between 12 to 18 and seven partners, including The Royal Horticultural Society and the Children's Book Project helped develop the ideas seen on the badges.
Amanda Azeez, acting chief executive of Girlguiding, said the launch of the new badges marked a "huge moment" for the orgaisation.
She added: "They've been designed by girls, for girls – which is so important to make sure we are staying relevant to girls' wants and needs.
"The response from girls and volunteers during the consultation process was incredible and really inspiring.
"There's something for everyone among the new badges and I'm looking forward to seeing the impact these activities have on girls, building their confidence and helping them know they can do anything."
Joining the organisation as ambassador to launch the project, broadcaster and presenter Angellica Bell said she wants to encourage girls to tackle the many challenges they face.
She said: "I know first-hand just how important it is for girls to have activities outside of school to educate but also have fun.
"Girlguiding offers a safe and welcoming space for all girls, and I am so impressed by the work they do to build girls' confidence and wellbeing, whilst tackling important issues impacting their lives such as online harm, sexism and misogyny.
"In a world where the voices of girls and young women are not always fairly heard, I am proud to stand alongside Girlguiding and will be using my voice to speak up for equality and to show that girls can do anything.'

Ozzy Osbourne's true thoughts about Taylor Swift resurface following his death at 76

's unabashed thoughts about Taylor Swift have reemerged days after his death at age 76. During an episode of The Talk in October 2014, Ozzy's wife Sharon Osbourne revealed what the Black Sabbath frontman had said about the 35-year-old pop star after a chance run-in with her. Sharon shared that her husband held the singer in high regard, comparing her to revered icons Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. 'Remember the time that we were all out shopping separately and we bumped into you, and I had Ozzy with me and [our daughter] Kelly was there and we all had chats in the store?' the former talk show host asked Taylor. She then recalled the late rocker saying about the songstress, 'Ozzy came away and he said, "Finally, out of all these young, new artists I finally found one that is a true superstar."' As the live audience applauded, Sharon continued: 'He said he'd never met anyone that had the aura that you have because your aura is one of elegance and just pure, just genuine talent.' Redirecting the conversation, Sharon then asked Taylor, 'Now what do you remember about my Ozzy?' Blushing, the songwriter said, 'First of all, that was the sweetest thing in the world,' before adding, 'I remember he didn't talk much.' Then Sharon quipped, 'He was too busy staring at you.' The blonde entertainer went on to say, 'He didn't talk much and me, and Kelly, and you were just kind of like, chattering away.' Taylor then noted that 'later, when Kelly told me that he had said those nice things I was so blown away. I was just so flattered. It was the sweetest thing in the world.' The Midnights artist also noted that she was struck by the Osbournes' close-knit dynamic. 'It was so nice to see you guys out as a family, all shopping together,' she reflected before pointing out, 'Those are the things that typically as kids grow up and everybody becomes adults, you don't see family days as much.' Sharon asked Taylor before detailing the story; L-R Kelly Osbourne, Ozzy, and Sharon pictured in 2020 'But it was a Sunday and you guys were just wandering around together. It was nice,' she added. Ozzy took the stage for his farewell concert at Villa Park Stadium in his native Birmingham, England less than three weeks before his death. The rocker reunited with his original Black Sabbath bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward for the first time since 2005 to bid an emotional farewell to his decades of performing live on stage. Over 42,000 fans packed into the venue for the Back to the Beginning show, which saw Ozzy and Black Sabbath return to their hometown 56 years after they formed there. In a statement shared on Tuesday, July 22, Ozzy's family said he died 'surrounded by love.' He is survived by his wife Sharon and his five children — Jessica, Louis, Aimee, Kelly and Jack.

I'm being booted out of our £4m home in 10 days… but I REFUSE to leave, says Harry Potter star Leslie Phillips' widow

After Leslie, who voiced The Sorting Hat in the Harry Potter films, died two and a half years ago aged 98, the contents of his will remained private. But when his last wishes were made public in 2024, it became clear that Leslie's will had been changed during the Covid crisis. The new will, approved in the Court of Protection, was substantially different to the one drawn up by Leslie the day before the couple married in December 2013. In 2014 Leslie suffered a massive stroke, and Zara quit work and looked after him until his death in November 2022. Leslie's first will had allowed Zara, his third wife and 36 years his junior, to stay in his £4million West London home for the rest of her life. But former air stewardess Zara discovered that a new will states the property must be sold and the proceeds put into a trust fund to be divided between her and Leslie's two sons and two daughters from his first marriage to actress Penelope Bartley. The new will, drawn up in November 2020, insists Zara has to be out of the five-bed property next month. According to a legal letter seen by The Sun, if she refuses to go, lawyers will apply to the courts for possession. Fighting back tears Zara says: 'Where would I go? I am in ill-health, old and frail, not well enough to move and I am still grieving.' Leslie Phillips dead at 98 – Harry Potter star who voiced Sorting Hat and Carry On icon passes away after long illness She adds: 'Leslie would not have wanted me to be thrown onto the street. I had known him for nearly 30 years. 'They told me that if I do go to court, they will deduct the money from my inheritance. 'The court can bring the bailiffs to throw me out but I won't go. The executors said, 'We know you looked after Leslie very well 24/7. That's the reason we're giving you money'. 'I found it very disrespectful. A wife doesn't charge her husband for looking after him when he is ill.' In a showbiz career lasting eight decades, Leslie appeared in more than 200 movies as well as hit TV series and on stage around the world. He was best known for his catchphrases 'Ding Dong', 'Well, Hellooo' and 'I Say' from appearing in 'Carry On' movies, delivered in rich dulcet tones. He wooed a new generation of fans as the voice of The Sorting Hat in Harry Potter movies, and also appeared with Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider as well as Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun and in Out of Africa with Robert Redford. Leslie's personal life was plagued by tragedy. His first wife Penelope died in a house fire in 1981, while Leslie was in Australia. The following year he married Bond girl Angela Scoular, who killed herself in 2011 with a lethal cocktail of drugs and alcohol after suffering terminal bowel cancer. Zara, a friend for more than 20 years, helped Leslie come to terms with Angela's death. They fell in love and married in December 2013. The actor's estate is valued at over £5million, including the house, which he bought in the 1960s at the height of his fame. When Covid shut down the country in 2020, Zara protected Leslie from the effects of the pandemic. But at that time Leslie changed the will, giving Zara just two years nine months after his death to vacate the house. Zara says: 'I was very vulnerable that time. The country was in the grip of the Covid crisis. 'I was the main carer for Leslie, who was disabled. His will was not my priority at that time. 'I was younger than him and I was devoted and committed. He was my main priority. I loved him with all my heart. I did what I had to do and put Leslie first.' A spokesman for the executors of Leslie's will says: 'I confirm that the administration of Leslie Phillips' estate is ongoing in accordance with a Will approved by the Court of Protection. 'It would not be appropriate for me to comment further for reasons of confidentiality.' 4 The couple tied the knot back in 2013 Credit: Louis Hollingsbee - The Sun

Travis Kelce unveils slick new haircut at Chiefs training camp as he ditches long locks ahead of new season

Travis Kelce has freshened up his look while in training camp with the Kansas City Chiefs after ditching his long locks for a fade. The 35-year-old, who is getting ready for his 13th season in the NFL, was sporting a slick new haircut when he emerged for practice with his teammates on Sunday. Kelce is back in football mode after enjoying some downtime in the offseason with girlfriend Taylor Swift, who he will not see for the next three weeks while in camp. Earlier this week he finally went Instagram official with Swift after posting her on his account for the very first time as part of an offseason photo dump. The superstar couple look smitten in a number of the pictures, which show them posing together in a warm setting, clowning around in the snow, skating on an ice rink and out with friends. One of the pictures even sparked engagement rumors after eagle-eyed Swifties spotted that Travis has an image of him and Taylor as the lock screen on his phone. In a photo that shows them out for dinner together, Kelce's phone is lying on the table with his loved-up screensaver clearly visible. And Swift's die-hard legion of fans pointed out how their beloved singer appeared to be holding both hands up to the camera with a ring on her finger. Yet according to TMZ , the pop megastar is actually wearing Kelce's three Super Bowl rings in the picture he saved as his phone background. Unfortunately for Swifties, it is believed that Travis has not yet popped the question to Taylor just yet. After his offseason adventures with Swift, Kelce was back on the practice field on Tuesday as the Chiefs began their preparations for the new NFL season. Up until August 13, the team will be based at Missouri Western State University in St Joseph - around an hour north Arrowhead Stadium. There, Kelce and the other 89 players on the roster will stay in dorms on campus for the duration of camp. That means three weeks without seeing their partners and families. For Travis, that means three weeks without seeing his girlfriend. Kelce and Swift enjoyed a more low-key offseason together than last year, with the pair only making a handful of public appearances since the Chiefs' Super Bowl defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles in February. The most noteworthy of the lot came when Taylor made a surprise cameo at her man's 'Tight End University' event in Nashville last month, where she took to the stage and performed her famous 'Shake It Off' song.
