9 Dead, 33 Injured As Bus Overturns In Punjab's Hoshiarpur

Hoshiarpur (Punjab):
A mini bus overturned near Sagran village of Hoshiarpur district on Monday, leaving nine people dead and 33 others injured, police said. A car was also involved in the accident, they said.
Mukerian Deputy Superintendent of Police Kulwinder Singh Virk said the bus, with about 40 passengers, was on its way to Dasuya from Hajipur town when the accident occurred.
Police stated the driver is said to have lost control over the vehicle, though exact cause of the accident is under investigation.
The injured passengers were admitted to Dasuya Civil Hospital for treatment.
On receiving information, Hoshiarpur Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain and Senior Superintendent of Police Sandeep Kumar Malik reached Dasuya to oversee the rescue and relief operations.
DC Jain said the government would provide an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to those seriously injured. The government will also bear the complete medical expenses of the injured, she added.
"At the accident site, an Alto car and the mini bus were found damaged. An investigation is underway to ascertain whether the accident occurred due to overspeeding, overloading or a technical fault. Further action will be taken based on the probe findings," SSP Malik said.
The deceased have been identified as Raju Bala (5) and Meena (30), both of Budhabaar village; Love Kumar (50) of Kangra district (Himachal Pradesh); Gurmit Ram (65) of Haler village; Satwinder Kaur (55) of Jalal Chak village; Balbir Kaur (60) of Dasuya; Sanjeev Kumar (30) of Gurdaspur district; and Subag Rani (55) of Sahora village, said Dr Manmohan Singh, civil hospital's senior medical officer.
One person's identity, a man aged about 50, is yet to be established, he said.
Of the 33 people admitted to the hospital, three critically injured - Raj Rani (55) of Sahora, Sanjeev Singh (45) of Chakraal and Khushi Mehta (22) - were referred to higher medical centres, Dr Singh said.
Six people were discharged after being administered first aid, while the condition of the remaining 24 injured was stable, he added.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed grief over the incident.

Last Updated: The minister highlighted that the primary goal of NCERT is to ensure every student in India has access to high-quality textbooks at very affordable prices. Since 2024, over 4.7 lakh pirated NCERT textbooks have been confiscated nationwide, according to Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary's written response in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. He noted that incidents of piracy involving NCERT textbooks have been reported from various regions across the country, according to a PTI report. 'Instances of piracy of NCERT textbooks have been received from different parts of the country. During the years 2024 and 2025, approximately 4.71 lakh pirated copies of NCERT textbooks have been seized in various operations across different states. Piracy is driven primarily by commercial motives of unscrupulous elements," Chaudhary said. 'The main objective of NCERT is to provide quality textbooks at a very affordable price to the last student across the country, on a no-profit and no-loss basis," he added. Efforts To Combat Piracy The Minister of State reported that NCERT conducted 29 raids over the past year on premises involved in the production and sale of counterfeit books and illegal printing of NCERT watermarked paper. These operations resulted in the seizure of stock and machinery worth over Rs 20 crore. – Timely printing and delivery of textbooks – Promotion of online textbook sales through e-commerce platforms – Utilisation of technology developed by IIT Kanpur Additionally, NCERT has tested a technology-based anti-piracy system, developed and patented by IIT Kanpur, on one million Class 6 books. 'NCERT has also taken several proactive measures to hit at the very root of piracy business, including a 20 per cent price reduction of NCERT textbooks, timely printing of NCERT textbooks, improved quality of paper and printing (using modern machines), promotion of online sale of textbooks through e-commerce platforms. NCERT has also conducted a pilot trial of a technology-based anti-piracy solution, on one million copies of a grade 6 textbook. Two Coimbatore men lose Rs 21.45 lakh to online fraudsters

COIMBATORE: Two Coimbatore men have lost a total of Rs 21.45 lakh to online fraudsters in two separate incidents recently. The city cyber crime police have registered two cases. K Sabarivasan, 35, of Veerakeralam in the city lost Rs 7.75 lakh to a cyber fraudster. Police said Sabarivasan saw an advertisement while watching a YouTube video in May. When he clicked on the link on the advertisement, his mobile number was added to a Telegram group. A member of the Telegram group advised him to invest in online trading and assured him huge returns. Believing his words, Sabarivasan transferred Rs 7.75 lakh to different bank accounts in 12 transactions from May 15 to June 18. However, he was unable to retrieve his money and realized that he had been cheated. He lodged a complaint with the cyber crime police. In another incident, a cyber fraudster cheated V Pateesh Pravin of Nanjundapuram in the city to the tune of Rs 13.70 lakh. "Pateesh, working as a building contractor, received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number stating that he could earn high profits through online trading by investing in a trading firm named 'Making Money.' He opened the link and transferred Rs 13.70 lakh in 13 transactions to different bank accounts. When he tried to withdraw the money, the fraudster asked him to deposit more money citing various reasons," a police officer said. Realizing that he had been cheated, Pateesh lodged a complaint with the city cyber crime police on Tuesday. Further investigations are under way.
