UF football position preview: Specialists

GAINESVILLE — The 11th and final position-by-position preview of the UF football team leading up to SEC Media Days.
TODAY: SPECIAL TEAMS
What to expect
The 2024 Gators had a 1-2 punch in the kicking game few if any teams could match. Now there is one. Placekicker Trey Smack is back for his final season, while record-setting punter Jeremy Crawshaw is off to the NFL.

Crawshaw might have been Florida's most consistent, reliable performer through the ups and downs of five seasons, three of them losing ones. He also endured a coaching change from Dan Mullen, who recruited the 6-foot-3, 205-pound Australia native to Gainesville, to Billy Napier.
Crawshaw ended his career averaging a school-record 46.4 yards per punt, including the single-season mark of 48.9 in 2023. The 24-year-old was rewarded. The Denver Broncos selected him in the sixth round to make him the only punter chosen in the 2025 NFL draft.
Michigan transfer punter Tommy Doman has big shoes to fill, but also a solid resumé. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound senior Doman averaged 42.6 yards on 49 punts this past season, including 15 downed inside the 20 and 10 of 50 yards or longer. Crawshaw finished last season with 25 of 59 punts inside the 20 and 19 of at least 50 yards.
Doman will be receiving the ball from one of the best in the business. Former Orlando Boone standout Rocco Underwood returns for his fourth year at UF after he earned the 2024 Mannelly Award, given the best long snapper in college football, and was second-team All-SEC. The 6-foot-3, 231-pound Underwood, a former tight end, also has recorded seven tackles on special teams.

True freshman Hayden Craig, a 3-star prospect from Quebec, Canada, who attended Bridgton Academy in Maine, will be preparing for his chance in 2026. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Craig was No. 5 player at his position, according to 247Sports composite rankings.
Evan Noel, the No. 1-rated kicker in the 2025 per 247Sports, will be Smack's heir apparent. The 6-foot-2, 155-pound native of Bay Saint Louis, Miss., set a state high school record with 61-yard field goal in 2024. He hit 25 of 40 attempts at St. Stanislaus High, but did miss 10 of 119 extra-point tries.

What they're saying
'Tommy's gonna be an instrumental part this fall. The experience, being a two-year starter at Michigan, playing in tough conditions — also having a guy from a program that's won a national championship. So he's been on that journey before but the warm weather in Florida was an easy sell. We're very, very fortunate to have him.' — special teams coach Joe Houston on Doman.

Lionel Messi needs to find his groove again to lead Inter Miami in Leagues Cup

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Lionel Messi and Inter Miami won their first match in the 2025 Leagues Cup but find themselves looking up at five other clubs in the tournament standings before their second match of the group stage. Inter Miami needs Messi to find his groove again if they're going to advance in the tournament. The 2025 Leagues Cup features a new format: While the matches are between Major League Soccer teams and LIGA MX clubs from Mexico, the top four clubs from each league will advance to the knockout stage. Earning three points for a win isn't enough in this year's edition. Goal differential is the next tiebreaker in the table, placing a greater emphasis on scoring to advance to the quarterfinals. 'You look at the table, and you've won and you're in sixth place because of the goal difference. There are still two games to play, a lot can happen,' Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said a day before the club's match against Necaxa at Chase Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 2. Messi delivered assists on goals scored by Telasco Segovia and Marcelo Weigandt in Inter Miami's 2-1 win against Atlas on July 30, but complained about feeling fatigued in his first match after having last week off. Messi was suspended for skipping the MLS All-Star Game on July 23, causing him to serve a one-game suspension on July 26. Before the layoff, Messi scored two goals in four of five matches following the FIFA Club World Cup. 'Even if [the rest] seems better, for me it's worse because I need to compete. I feel good physically the more matches I play and get into rhythm,' Messi told Apple TV. 'The other day they didn't let me compete, and I felt it in the first half, but the important thing is that we won.' Mascherano expects Messi to find his form again, especially with Inter Miami having three of its next four matches at home. The only away match is against in-state rival Orlando City on Aug. 10. 'Unless Leo feels tired and doesn't say anything, the idea is that if he feels good, he'll always play,' Mascherano said of Messi. Inter Miami needs its biggest star to keep pace with the MLS clubs in Leagues Cup. The Seattle Sounders thrashed reigning Concacaf Champions Cup winners Cruz Azul 7-0, while L.A. Galaxy beat Tijuana 5-2 on July 31. The Portland Timbers toppled Atlético de San Luis 4-0, and Minnesota United beat Querétaro 4-1 on July 30. Seattle, Portland, the Galaxy and Minnesota are the top four clubs in the MLS side of the Leagues Cup table, followed by FC Cincinnati (which beat Monterrey 3-2 on July 31), Inter Miami, the Colorado Rapids and New York Red Bulls. Those eight MLS clubs won their first Leagues Cup match. The top four on the LIGA MX side are Tigres UANL, FC Juarez, Puebla and Necaxa after the first round of matches. After facing Necaxa, Inter Miami will host Tigres UANL on Wednesday, Aug. 6 in their last match of the group stage. 'What keeps you going is trying to play well, get a good result, and then we'll see what happens,' Mascherano said. 'But I don't think there's much point in feeling sorry for yourself or focusing too much on other results.' Necaxa is led by new coach Fernando Gago, barely two months into the job. They beat Atlanta United 3-1 in their Leagues Cup opener on July 30. Gago was a starter alongside Messi and Mascherano in Argentina's 1-0 win in the Olympic men's soccer final in 2008, and came off the bench in their loss to Germany in the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup final. 'Fernando is a friend from soccer – someone I had the privilege of sharing many years with on the national team, but he's also someone I care about, someone I've shared moments with outside of soccer as well,' Mascherano said of Gago. 'It's always special to face people you know, people you've shared so many good times with. And in the end, when the ball starts rolling, I'll try to do everything I can to compete in the best way possible and win so we can still hope to qualify.' How to watch Inter Miami vs. Necaxa in Leagues Cup? The match begins at 7 p.m. on Aug. 2, with live stream available on MLS Season Pass via Apple TV. End of the chain gang? NFL adopts virtual measurement system

The NFL introduced a virtual measurement system for determining first downs in the season's first pre-season game and it could lead to the end of the "chain gang" on the sidelines. During the Los Angeles Chargers' 34-7 rout of Detroit on Thursday at Canton, Ohio, the league gave fans a first glimpse of the future of deciding first downs with the HawkEye technology method used to make line calls in tennis. In the first half, Detroit running back Craig Reynolds carried for 10 yards. To confirm his run was a first down, the officials turned to the virtual measurement system, showing a replay that assured he had gone 10 full yards. The system, operated by NFL headquarters personnel in New York, worked smoothly and quickly, making a determination up to 40 seconds faster than before. In the meantime, the chain gang -- the officials who for decades have held two sticks with a 10-yard chain in between them on the sidelines and run onto the field as needed to measure for first downs -- was reduced to just another set of spectators, although they will be kept in position on the sidelines in case there is a system failure. The system, confirmed for the upcoming campaign last April, features six cameras at various angles around the field to determine the ball's position after every play. The NFL called the new system "an efficient alternative to the process of walking chains onto the field and manually measuring whether 10 yards have been met after the official has spotted the ball, while noting, "The chain crew will remain on the field in a secondary capacity." Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel, a Super Bowl winner as a reserve with New Orleans, posted on X: "I really don't know how to feel about this... It's the new virtual measurement system for first downs... give me chain gang all day." "Before you know it they will have robots going out there and measuring it. Just stop it already," former NFL player and coach Herm Edwards said on ESPN. js/ea

NFL is expected to take an ownership stake in ESPN

Walt Disney Co. is expected to announce the NFL is taking an equity stake in its sports media property ESPN, according to people familiar with the plan. Disney may reveal the deal during its earnings call Wednesday. Representatives at the NFL and ESPN declined comment Friday. In return for the equity stake, ESPN is expected at minimum to take over the NFL's cable properties including the NFL Network and Red Zone, the popular channel that continuously updates fans on the slate of Sunday contests. The NFL Network also has the rights to several regular season games late in the season. NFL also owns the league's production unit, NFL Films, and NFL+, the streaming service that enables subscribers to watch games and other related content on mobile devices. Read more: Can ESPN survive while cable TV dies? ESPN has the broadcast rights to "Monday Night Football" and two Super Bowl games in the current NFL contract that runs through 2033 but is expected to be reopened in 2029. The impending deal with Disney means the NFL's other partners — Fox, NBC, CBS, YouTube and Amazon — will be bidding against an entity that the league has a financial interest in next time the media rights come up. Discussions between the NFL and Disney have been ongoing for more than 18 months as concerns heightened about the viability of ESPN when consumers continue to bypass or cancel pay TV subscriptions. ESPN has long been the most expensive part of the pay TV bundle, currently getting close to $9 per subscriber. It is now in around 73 million homes, down from 98.5 million in 2013. ESPN is adapting to the streaming landscape, launching its first stand-alone direct-to-consumer product that will give consumers access to all of its channels without a pay TV subscription. The service will cost $29.99 a month. TV ratings for ESPN have improved and ad sales have remained strong as advertisers value audiences who watch live programming.
