Ohtani bags strikeouts, home run as Dodgers rout Nats
The Japanese superstar then followed up that lone inning with a huge offensive performance, blasting a three-run triple and a two-run home run as the Dodgers piled on the runs in the late innings to romp to victory.
Ohtani, the reigning National League Most Valuable Player, only returned to pitching last Monday after a near two-year absence.
The 30-year-old is being eased back into the pitching rotation by the Dodgers, who have restricted him to two single-inning pitching performances so far.
Ohtani tore elbow ligaments just over two years ago and underwent Tommy John surgery, leaving him unable to pitch, although was still able to bat after joining the Dodgers on a 10-year, $700 million contract in December 2023.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Sunday that the team would continue to take a cautious approach with Ohtani's pitching as the season progresses.
"Right now, he's good with one inning," Roberts told reporters.
"It's just more trying to get a foundation, the building blocks, as he's taking at bats and getting an inning here, and an inning there...just erring on the side of caution.
"He's understanding where he's at, and where we're at. As time goes on we'll get to a certain point, but there's no sense in rushing it."
Ohtani is widely regarded as a modern-day Babe Ruth, a rarity in baseball in that he combines elite hitting and pitching.
Last year he became the first player in history to score 50 home runs and nab 50 stolen bases in a season -- a statistical feat once regarded as unthinkable -- before helping the Dodgers win last year's World Series.
Sunday's home run was his 26th of the season, a tally that has helped the Dodgers move to the top of the National League West division.

MLB Nationals name Cairo interim manager after shake-up
The 51-year-old Venezuelan, who played for nine different MLB teams in a 17-year career that ended in 2012, replaced Dave Martinez, who was fired by the struggling club on Sunday in a shake-up that also included the ouster of general manager Mike Rizzo. "Miguel is well-respected in our organization and around baseball," interim general manager Mike DeBartolo said in a statement. "A diligent worker and student of the game, he has a proven track record of showing strong leadership in a variety of situations and I believe that his voice and energy will serve as a catalyst to our team and our fan base in the second half of the season." The Nationals are 37-53 and last in the National League East division. They are on pace for a sixth straight losing season since winning the 2019 World Series under Martinez. DeBartolo took over on Sunday for Rizzo, who had been making personnel decisions for the Nats sine 2009. Cairo has MLB managerial experience. In 2022, he was a bench coach for the Chicago White Sox and served as acting manager when Tony La Russa stepped away with health issues. Cairo guided the White Sox to an 18-16 record over the final games of the campaign. The Nationals take the field under Cairo for the first time on Tuesday at St. Louis. Washington holds the top pick Sunday in the MLB Draft.

MLB Nationals fire manager Martinez, GM Rizzo after loss
Shortly after the Nats dropped a 6-4 decision at home to Boston, team owner Mark D. Lerner announced Rizzo, the president of baseball operations, would be replaced by assistant general manager Mike DeBartolo and that an interim manager would be named on Monday, an off day for the club. Lerner, in a statement released on social media, praised Martinez and Rizzo for their roles in directing the Nationals to the 2019 World Series title, but they have not enjoyed a winning season or playoff berth since. "While we are appreciative of their past successes, the on-field performance has not been where we or our fans expect it to be," Lerner said. "This is a pivotal time for our club and we believe a fresh approach and new energy is the best course of action for our team moving forward." The Nationals are 37-53, last in the National League East division, and went 7-19 in June. They are 1-4 this month and were swept at home by Boston by 11-2, 10-3 and 6-4 over the US Independence Day holiday weekend. Martinez, hired in October of 2017, was the longest-tenured manager in Nationals history. The 60-year-old American was 500-622 with the Nats after replacing Dusty Baker while Rizzo was in his 17th season as baseball operations boss for the club. The Nationals have traded such stars as Max Scherzer and Juan Soto to obtain younger talent in building for the future but have been unable to make the moves pay off with triumphs. Martinez has spent 39 seasons in baseball as a player, coach and manager. He spent 16 seasons as a player and was an assistant coach on the 2016 Chicago Cubs World Series championship squad before taking his first manager's post with the Nats.
