Heatwave triggers health warnings across Balkans
ZAGREB: Temperatures soared across the Balkans on Thursday, with parts of the region expected to hit 41 degrees Celsius (106 Fahrenheit), triggering heatwave health warnings.

In Croatia, the capital Zagreb and the country's east were at the highest risk of heat, according to the national Meteorological and Hydrological Service.
Authorities remained on high alert after forest fires over the weekend destroyed dozens of homes on the country's tourism-oriented southern coast.
Albania said its firefighters managed to control eight blazes in the past 24 hours.
Meteorologists in Bosnia warned people to stay indoors as parts of the country were predicted to climb to 41C.
"Be ready to suspend outdoor activities and prepared for high temperatures that will lead to health risks among vulnerable people, like the elderly and very young," Bosnia's meteorological institute said.
This is the first of at least three heatwaves expected during the June-August period in Bosnia, said Bakir Krajinovic from the country's Federal Hydro-Meteorological Institute.
Temperatures so far this month have already exceeded forecasts, and predictions for July and August indicate temperatures will be four to five degrees above average, Krajinovic said.
It was also the driest June on record in Bosnia, with the lowest rainfall since measurements began 135 years ago.
Krajinovic said climate change was driving "more intense" weather events and breaking records "more often".
Parts of Serbia are predicted to climb to 39C, also significantly above seasonal average, according to Serbia's National Hydrometeorological Service.
The heat is expected to ease by Friday, with temperatures slightly dropping over the weekend, before climbing again next week, according to weather forecasts for several Balkan nations.

Light rain, thunderstorms hit Delhi-NCR; mercury dips sharply
Delhi and adjoining NCR witnessed light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds on Monday (June 30, 2025) morning, pushing the temperatures several degrees down and rendering the air cleaner. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded widespread precipitation across various parts of Delhi-NCR from Sunday (June 29) night. Safdarjung, the city's base observatory, recorded 14 mm rainfall in the 24 hours until 8.30 a.m. on Monday. Palam and Lodi Road logged 16.2 mm and 17.3 mm of rainfall respectively during the same period. As per the IMD's three-hourly rainfall data, Najafgarh saw the highest spell at 5.5 mm between 2.30 a.m. and 5.30 a.m. on Monday (June 30), followed Safdarjung at 4.4 mm rainfall, and Palam, Pusa and Narela at 1 mm rain each. The rainfall led to a notable drop in day temperatures on Monday (June 29). According to the IMD, the minimum temperature recorded at 8.30 am at Safdarjung station was 24 degrees Celsius, 3.9 notches below the season's average. The air quality improved slightly, though the Air Quality Index (AQI) continued to stay in the 'satisfactory' category. The AQI recorded was 73 at 9 am on Monday (June 30), against 83 on Sunday evening. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, an AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'. The IMD had issued a nowcast warning for Monday (June 30) morning, forecasting light rain and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds with speeds up to 30-40 kilometres per hour across all four sectors of Delhi — northwest, northeast, southwest and southeast. Parts of NCR, including Ghaziabad, Noida, Gurgaon and Faridabad, also experienced similar conditions. The Met office has issued a yellow alert (Be Aware) for most of Delhi and NCR, while certain parts like northwest Delhi and sections of NCR such as Jhajjar, Bhiwani and Panipat were under the green zone (No Warning). More light to moderate showers are likely in parts of the region over the next 24 hours, as per IMD officials, who also advised residents to avoid open spaces during thunderstorms and remain alert to possible waterlogging in low-lying areas.
