Malaysia-Thailand boat race to boost border economy
PASIR MAS: The plan to hold a boat race competition between Malaysia and Thailand along Sungai Golok could breathe new life into a shared cultural tradition while boosting the local economy. Kelantan Tourism, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Datuk Kamaruddin Md Nor said the event would create opportunities for small businesses, homestay operators, and tourism service providers in Pasir Mas and nearby border areas. 'We feel that events like this can revive the local economy because travellers will come not just to watch the boat race, but also to sample the traditional food, stay in local hotels or homestays and purchase handicrafts,' he told reporters during a trial race at Sungai Golok. The proposed venue, Pohon Jambu base, is already a popular gathering spot for Malaysian and Thai communities. Kamaruddin noted that its strategic location would directly benefit nearby economic activities. 'This place is beautiful and suitable for such an event because the river is not too wide and already has basic facilities. We also receive good cooperation from the Sungai Golok authorities,' he said. Discussions are underway to expand the event by including more teams from Kelantan and Thailand's Narathiwat province, potentially making it an annual affair. A unique blindfolded boat race is also being considered to attract more visitors. The recent two-day trial race featured 40 teams, including five from Malaysia, drawing around 1,000 spectators. Such events not only preserve cultural heritage but also play a key role in revitalising the border economy, heavily reliant on tourism. - Bernama

Typhoon Wipha barrels toward Vietnam, sparks response in coastal hotspots
QUANG NINH, Vietnam (Bernama-VNA): Typhoon Wipha is closing in on northern Vietnam, with its erratic path prompting urgent preparations in Quang Ninh province and the port city of Hai Phong to safeguard residents, infrastructure, and economic assets ahead of an anticipated landfall. According to Vietnam News Agency (VNA), in Quang Ninh, locals are reinforcing rooftops, securing aquaculture rafts, and steering fishing vessels to safe harbours. Tourist boats have been relocated to designated storm shelters to shield visitors and operators. Competent forces have issued an urgent directive suspending departure permits for passenger boats in the province. In Hai Phong, a bustling coastal city, authorities activated a full-scale storm response by 1pm on Sunday (July 20), coordinating across agencies, communes, wards, and special economic zones. The municipal People's Committee said it had deployed emergency plans by 6pm on Saturday (July 19), tailored to each area's risk levels. The city has herded 1,657 vessels with 4,668 crew members to safe anchorages and issued warnings to nearly 9,900 aquaculture cages and over 16,000 tourists on Cat Ba Island, including roughly 2,500 foreigners. All vessels remain in communication with authorities, with none stuck in the storm's danger zone, the committee reported. Within Hai Phong's maritime zone, 71 ships carrying 690 crew members are safely anchored. Evacuation plans are ready for low-lying, coastal, and riverside areas across 114 communes, wards, and special zones. Inspectors checked 180 old apartment blocks, tagging 59 as Grade D, the highest risk level for structural failure. To fend off strong winds, the city has chopped and shored up urban trees to stop branches from smashing traffic, power lines, or wrecking construction sites. - Bernama-VNA

GENERAL MELAKA, July 20 (Bernama) -- The Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (MOTAC) will host an International Workshop on the Melaka Declaration on Cultural Heritage Value Creation from July 23 to 24 at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) World Heritage City of Melaka. The ministry's Corporate Communication Unit said the two-day workshop will be jointly organised with the ASEAN Secretariat and strategic partners, Think City and Telekom Malaysia Berhad. 'The workshop is a step forward in harnessing the untapped power of Southeast Asia's rich cultural heritage as a catalyst for sustainable economic growth, social cohesion and creative innovation. 'This international gathering will bring together over 100 distinguished participants including cultural experts, academics, creative economy leaders, representatives from ASEAN Member States, SOMCA (Senior Officials' Meeting on Culture and Arts) and stakeholders to explore transformative approaches in heritage conservation and value creation,' the ministry said in a statement tonight, adding that panel discussions, breakout dialogues and plenary sessions would be held throughout the workshop. Discussions on maximising the socio-economic potential of ASEAN's cultural heritage by elevating its value chain for economic growth, strengthening regional cooperation through whole-of-ASEAN frameworks and cross-pillar collaboration will also be held during the workshop. The event is expected to promote public awareness and community engagement in heritage preservation, and integrate culture and heritage into sustainable development policies to ensure inclusive growth and social cohesion. 'The Melaka Declaration, as the main outcome of the workshop, will contribute to the development of a significant ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) outcome document, targeted to be adopted at the 47th ASEAN Summit in October 2025 in Kuala Lumpur. 'It aims to strengthen cultural cooperation, expand inclusive economic opportunities and promote a deeper appreciation of ASEAN's shared heritage,' the ministry added. — BERNAMA
