WI vs AUS 1st T20: Dwarshuis, Owen star in Aussies' 3-wicket win in Jamaica

Business Standard15 hours ago
In the penultimate T20 match in Andre Russell's international career, Australia defeated West Indies by 3 wickets at Sabina Park, Kingston in Jamaica on Monday morning (IST). With the win, Australia took 1-0 lead in the five-match T20 series.
Earlier, Australia staged a remarkable comeback in the final overs to restrict West Indies to 189 in their innings, after the hosts looked set for a 200-plus total. A flurry of early boundaries and an aggressive knock by Roston Chase had put West Indies in a commanding position before the Aussies pulled things back in dramatic fashion.
Speaking after the innings, Roston Chase said, "I wanted to make the most of the powerplay and rotate after that. I wanted to play my shots and express myself — that is my role as well." Chase looked in top form, smashing a quickfire 50 off just 21 balls and punishing the Australian bowlers with clean hitting. Alongside him, Shai Hope anchored the innings with a composed half-century, as the duo built a strong platform in the middle overs.
Promising Start Fizzles Out
West Indies got off to a solid start thanks to Brandon King, who struck a flurry of boundaries early on. However, his momentum was halted when he was stumped attempting to attack Connolly. Chase and Hope then took charge, punishing the visitors all around the park. But after Chase was dismissed by Dwarshius, the West Indies innings began to unravel.

Mitch Owen and Dwarshius trigger collapse
Debutant Mitch Owen made a significant impact with the ball, claiming the key wicket of Shai Hope and shifting the momentum in Australia's favor. Dwarshius, who had already removed Chase, returned to deliver a game-changing final over, picking up three wickets and dismantling the lower order. Nathan Ellis followed up with a tight final over to ensure Australia closed the innings on a high.
Andre Russell's performance in his penultimate T20 International match
Andre Russell failed to lite up the Sabina Park with bat or ball. During the first innings, Russell managed to score only 8 runs off 9 balls, hitting a six.
37-year-old all-rounder failed to perform with the bat as well. He leaked 37 runs in the two overs he bowled during West Indies' chase.
Final Five Overs Turn the Game
The last five overs saw West Indies lose six wickets while scoring just 37 runs — a dramatic shift considering their earlier dominance. At one point, a score beyond 200 looked likely, but disciplined bowling and timely wickets from the Australians saw the home side fall short of expectations.

Pakistan Star Replaces Ruturaj Gaikwad In This Team: "Naturally Disappointed..."

Pakistan opener Imam-ul-Haq has joined Yorkshire as an overseas signing for the remainder of the English domestic season. The 28-year-old, who has scored three Test centuries and nine in ODIs, will be available immediately and is set to feature in Yorkshire's upcoming County Championship match against Surrey at Scarborough. Imam replaces Indian batter Ruturaj Gaikwad, who withdrew from his planned stint due to personal reasons. Imam is no stranger to English conditions, having previously played for Somerset in 2022. Earlier this year, he helped Pakistan Television clinch the President's Cup, Pakistan's premier domestic tournament. Yorkshire hope his experience and form will boost their red-ball and 50-over campaigns through the end of the season. 'We're delighted that Imam has joined us and that he will be available immediately,' said Gavin Hamilton, Yorkshire's general manager of cricket. 'Whilst we were naturally disappointed that Ruturaj couldn't join up with the squad, in Imam, we have an exceptional player of proven international quality. 'Imam has an impressive record and is already familiar with domestic cricket in this country, which will stand us in good stead for a crucial block of fixtures. We are grateful for the speed at which he has arrived in the country, and everyone at the club is looking forward to working with him until the end of the season.' Meanwhile, Derbyshire have confirmed that Australian batter Caleb Jewell will return to the club in 2026 after signing a new deal. Jewell has been one of the standout players in Division Two this season, scoring 821 runs at an average of 54.73, including a career-best 232 against Kent. 'Caleb has performed brilliantly in the first half of the season, despite adapting to new conditions, and we were keen to get a deal done quickly,' said Mickey Arthur, Derbyshire's head of cricket. 'He brings real grit and determination to our ranks, the exact qualities you want from an overseas signing.' Jewell added: 'I've loved my time with Derbyshire so far, and I'm really happy to have signed for next season already. There's a great bunch of players at this club; they've all made me feel so welcome, and that's been reflected on the field. Hopefully, we can have a strong 50-over competition and then focus our efforts on staying in the hunt for promotion.'

‘The Australians said this was a different team, like a pack of wolves coming in for the kill' : 2005 Ashes hero Simon Jones on historic win

It has been 20 years since the start of the 2005 Ashes series between arch rivals England and Australia, where the Michael Vaughan led England team scripted a 2-1 Ashes to create history. It was England's first Ashes win since 1987 after eight Ashes losses against Australia. Former England bowler Simon Jones, who took 18 wickets in three Tests in the series before being injured, has now recalled how the members at Lord's encouraged the English side to take down the Australian team prior to the opening Test apart from Australians terming the England team as 'pack of wolves coming for the kill' during the first Test at Lord's. 'When we went through that Long Room, and we walked down the stairs and through the pavilion, it erupted. I remember Kev (Kevin Pietersen) turning around and saying to me: 'What is going on here?' It almost shocked us really. Normally it is all the members and they are a bit subdued. A bit staid. A bit posh. But people were saying 'take these down' and we were all like, 'OK, here we go'. When Steve Harmison hit Ponting (in the first innings of Lord's Test), which never happens by the way, nobody went to check on him. The Australians said this was a different team, like a pack of wolves coming in for the kill. And it was. We wanted to take them down,' recalled Jones while speaking with BBC Sport. England had lost the opening Test at Lord's by 239 runs before Andrew Flintoff's heroic act at Edgbaston saw the England team winning the Test by two runs. The Edgbaston Test, which is also remembered for Flintoff consoling Australian non-striker Brett Lee after Steve Harminon dismissed Michael Kasprowicz, was also Jones' second Ashes Test. Jones would pick up three wickets in the second test, an identical haul during the Lord's Test, before the then 27-year-old bowler picked up seven wickets in the third Test at Manchester including a six-wicket haul in the first innings. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 HAPPY ST DAVID'S DAY! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 1️⃣8️⃣ reasons to love Simon Jones ❤️#EnglandCricket — England Cricket (@englandcricket) March 1, 2024 With the Manchester test being drawn, it was Jones' dismissal of Michale Clarke with an inswinging delivery, which is the most remembered of the 18 Ashes wickets taken by Jones in his career. Jones talked about the sound of uprooting the off-stump of Clarke being the 'best noise in cricket'. 'It sounds like music. It's the best noise in cricket. People want the noise that stumps made as their ringtone and stuff. I love the fact that people are still playing it now. It's been a long time. But people still think it's one of the best balls that has ever been bowled, so it's a really proud moment,' Jones would say about the Clarke delivery. The fourth Test at Nottingham, where Jones would take his second five-wicket haul of his Ashes career in the first innings, would see the pacer being injured due to an ankle injury and bowling only four overs during Australia's second innings. England would win the Test by three wickets, which would also happen to Jones' last Test match in England colours. Jones talked about how he cherishes the fourth Test and the special win for England followed by the 2-1 series win for England with a draw in the last test at The Oval. 'At the time, I didn't realise that would be my last Test for England. It was like going from the penthouse to the outhouse. I had the best summer of my life in an England shirt and then to never play again… but I'm a big believer in what will be, will be. It's better to have experienced it. Would you rather play 100 Tests and not have 2005, or would you rather play the 18 you played and have 2005? It would be the 18 Tests with 2005 included every day of the week. It didn't get better than that,' recalled Jones.
