Shamsul Anuar: Umno must act now to reclaim Kelantan

TUMPAT: Umno delegates' meeting remains the best platform for members to voice their opinions and offer constructive criticism to strengthen the party from within, said its Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah.
He said members must seize the opportunity to refine the party's direction and prepare it to regain its position as a dominant political force, particularly in Kelantan.
"This is the best forum for members to speak up, give feedback and guide the party forward.
"If we want Umno to once again become a dominant party and win back seats in Kelantan, we must act now, especially in engaging with the youth as part of our preparation for the 16th General Election," he said at the launch of the Tumpat Umno division delegates' meeting here today.
Shamsul Anuar said this effort must come with certain conditions.
"It is not enough to cheer and rally support. Party leaders must project a strong and clean image.
"At the same time, they must defend and champion the interests of party members," he said.
Shamsul Anuar said Umno must shift its approach by becoming a true advocate for the Malay community to rebuild trust and enhance the party's image.
"We must fight for issues that affect people's lives so that they continue to stand with us.
"If we only prioritise the party, they will drift away," he said.
He said Umno leaders must show inclusivity and uphold democratic values to reflect the party's strength as an organisation.
Touching on Kelantan specifically, Shamsul Anuar said the state required a targeted and strategic approach to win back voters.
"We want to return Kelantan to Barisan Nasional, but we must understand the state's changing political landscape and socio-economic realities.
"Voter sentiment in Kelantan is different from that in Perak or elsewhere.
"BN has not governed Kelantan since 1990.
"The state has a strong identity rooted in religion and conservative values, and Umno must understand and respect this," he said.
He said Umno must offer something better than what Pas is currently delivering.
"That is why we must start the groundwork now.
"We need to find the right approach and offer the best solutions to the people of Kelantan," he said.
Shamsul Anuar said Umno remains one of the most organised and democratic parties, and must continue listening to its grassroots at all levels to stay relevant and strong.

Zahid hailed as Umno's saviour by Marang division

MARANG: Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has been recognised as the 'bapa penyelamat' (saviour) of Umno. The recognition was announced by Terengganu Umno deputy chairman Datuk Nik Dir Nik Wan Ku during the opening ceremony of the Marang Umno Wanita division delegates' meeting this evening. Nik Dir, who is also Marang Umno division chief, said the recognition was given to Zahid, who is also the Bagan Datuk member of parliament, for defending the party despite calls for its dissolution following its poor performance in the 15th general election (GE15). He said Zahid, who is also the deputy prime minister, stood firm in not dissolving Umno even while facing 87 court charges, and despite claims that the party had no future and could not be trusted. "Ahmad Zahid, who had to attend court hearings over 87 charges of corruption, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering, showed extraordinary spirit and remained resolute in his decision not to dissolve Umno. "The Marang division party committee has thus decided to recognise Ahmad Zahid as 'bapa penyelamat' of Umno," he said during the meeting at Dewan Perkasa, Asrama Darul Falah, Bukit Payong. The Marang Umno Wanita delegates' meeting was launched by Umno Wanita Movement executive council member Datuk Nurulhidayah Ahmad Zahid. Also present was Marang Umno Wanita chief Zaiton Mat Amin. Nik Dir said Ahmad Zahid was seen as "unyielding" and highly spirited, ignoring all pressure despite Umno winning only 24 parliamentary seats in GE15. He said Umno leaders nationwide were at the time concerned that Ahmad Zahid might bow to pressure and agree to dissolve the party. "Umno Marang division hereby officially recognises Ahmad Zahid as the saviour of the party," he said, drawing cheers of "Hidup Ahmad Zahid" and "Hidup Umno" from about 700 delegates.

No urgent need for major DBP Act amendments, says director-general

BACHOK: There is no pressing requirement for significant amendments to the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) Act, as existing legislation already reinforces the use of the National Language in official matters. Government circulars and other legal provisions ensure proper language use across public services, according to DBP Director-General Dr Hazami Jahari. He highlighted that language enforcement is firmly rooted in Article 152 of the Federal Constitution, which designates Malay as Malaysia's official language. Additional support comes from the Education Act, local authority bylaws, and regulations on product labeling and public advertising. 'After 69 years of DBP's existence, we face no major issues in enforcing the National Language because current laws are adequate. What we need now is stronger implementation and commitment from agencies, local authorities, and society,' he told reporters after launching the East Region Writers' Camp. The proposed amendments aim to expand DBP's role internationally and establish it as the sole certifying body for language courses and publications. Another key proposal is requiring DBP endorsement for official recognition of language-related goods and publications. Hazami stressed that legal measures alone cannot uphold the National Language. Instead, fostering love and responsibility among Malaysians is crucial. 'Countries like Japan and Thailand thrive linguistically without punitive laws, relying instead on national pride and awareness,' he said. Earlier, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek noted that the amendments aim to strengthen DBP's role in promoting Malay, alongside a RM50 million allocation announced in Budget 2025. - Bernama
