Prep sports roundup: Corona stays unbeaten with three-run rally in seventh inning
Down by two runs with two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Panthers (15-0) pulled out an 8-7 victory over Queen Creek (Ariz.) Casteel.
Ethin Bingaman delivered the walk-off two-run, two-out single on a 2-and-2 count. Before that, with a runner on first and two outs, Trey Ebel walked. Jesiah Andrade singled on a two-strike pitch to load the bases. Anthony Murphy, on a 3-and-2 count, drew a walk to make it 7-6. That's when Bingaman, during a nine-pitch at-bat, finally hit the ball on a line drive to left field to deliver victory.
Corona started its No. 4 pitcher, Mason Sims, and now will have Seth Hernandez, Bingaman and Jason Gerfers set to pitch in the remaining games.
Huntington Beach 5, Brooklyn (N.Y.) Poly Prep Country Day 4: The Oilers got the walk-off win in the eighth inning on a fielder's choice in Cary, N.C. They trailed 3-2 going to the bottom of the seventh and tied the game on a sacrifice. In the bottom of the eighth, they scored two runs to advance. Ethan Porter had three hits, including an RBI single in the eighth to tie the score.
Venice (Fla.) 3, La Mirada 1: In the bottom of the eighth inning, Eddie Zaun hit a two-run home run to defeat La Mirada in a first-round game in Cary, N.C. Maverek Russell had two hits for La Mirada (13-3).

On Tuesday night, the Mets suffered a significant injury. During the fourth inning of a critical series against the San Diego Padres, star outfielder Juan Soto fouled a ball off of his foot and was pulled from the game with a foot contusion. After the game, Soto gave an optimistic update on the status of his foot, via SNY. 'I think it's gonna be good,' Soto said. 'I think it's gonna be good. We've just got to get the swelling down. Whenever the swelling is down, I think we're gonna be fine. X-rays are negative, so it's a good sign. We've just got to wait for the swelling to come down and go back to where I'm at.' Soto also addressed his pain level after the game, after appearing to be in a world of hurt when he went down on the field originally. 'It's actually numb,' he said. 'I don't feel anything right now. It's getting a little stiff but we're gonna see in the morning how it goes.' Soto has been finding his stride of late for the Mets after some rocky moments earlier in the season, so New York will want to have him back in the lineup as soon as he can possibly get out there. For the season coming into Tuesday, Soto had racked up 25 home runs and 62 RBI. He was hitting just .249, but was still an on-base machine with an MLB-leading 84 walks. The Padres went on to beat the Mets very comfortably in a 7-1 blowout on Tuesday night, but New York still sits in the top spot in the NL East by a half-game over the Philadelphia Phillies. The Mets and Phillies are two of the best teams in baseball, so the health of a player like Soto can go a long way toward deciding who comes out on top. Rooker, Langeliers hit HRs to help Athletics beat Mariners 6-1
Brent Rooker and Shea Langeliers hit home runs, Miguel Andujar had two hits and two RBIs and the Athletics beat the Seattle Mariners 6-1 on Tuesday night. Luis Severino (5-11) allowed a run on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts in five innings. Elvis Alvarado, Sean Newcomb — who struck out the side in the seventh — and Michael Kelly combined to pitch four scoreless innings of relief. Langeliers hit a solo homer off Mariners starter Logan Evans (4-4), Soderstrom singled and Andujar followed with an RBI double to make it 6-0 in the fifth. Rooker hit a three-run shot before Langeliers doubled and then scored on Andujar's double that made it 4-0 in the third. Randy Arozarena hit a two-out single, stole second base and scored when Jorge Polanco singled in the fourth for the Mariners' run. The Mariners struck out 11 times, left nine runners on base and were 1 of 7 with runners in scoring position. After Polanco's RBI single got the Mariners on the board, Dominic Canzone singled and Ben Williamson walked to load the bases but Severino got Cole Young — the potential go-ahead run — to ground out and end the inning. Arozarena has 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases this season, his fifth consecutive 20/20 season. The 30-year-old is tied with Mike Trout for third most 20/20 seasons in American League history behind Alex Rodriguez (six) and José Ramírez (seven). Ramírez is the only other player in MLB to accomplish the feat in each of the past five seasons. Bryan Woo (8-5, 2.91 ERA) is set the take the mound on Wednesday against Jeffrey Springs (9-7, 4.13) to conclude a three-game set.

Vaughn emerges as one of league's hottest hitters with Brewers after slumping with White Sox
MILWAUKEE (AP) — When Andrew Vaughn joined the Milwaukee Brewers last month with a chance to rejuvenate a career that had gone sideways, the message he received from his new team was simple. If you chase, you won't play. Vaughn took that advice to heart, and suddenly the guy who was batting well below .200 for the first two months of the season is one of baseball's hottest hitters. His remarkable turnaround produced its biggest highlight yet on Tuesday night as Vaughn hit a grand slam and had a career-high six RBIs in the Brewers' 9-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Vaughn's performance helped the Brewers extend their NL Central lead over Chicago to two games. 'It's a special group here right now,' said Vaughn, who went 3 for 4 on Tuesday. 'We're playing really good baseball. It's fun to be a part of.' Vaughn, 27, is batting .375 with a .439 on-base percentage, .771 slugging percentage, five homers and 21 RBIs in 15 games since joining the Brewers on July 7. The only player in the major leagues with more RBIs during that stretch is Philadelphia's Kyle Schwarber. 'It's been awesome,' teammate Jackson Chourio said through an interpreter. 'The way he's been able to help us out has just been spectacular. It's just been inspiring to watch.' Vaughn's surge is particularly notable because he was struggling as much as just about any hitter in the game for much of the season. After hitting a combined 72 homers for the Chicago White Sox from 2021-24, Vaughn batted just .189 with a .218 on-base percentage, five homers and 19 RBIs in 48 games before he got sent down to the minors. Vaughn was still playing with Triple-A Charlotte when the Brewers acquired him in a June 13 trade that sent Aaron Civale to Chicago. The Brewers initially assigned Vaughn to their Triple-A team in Nashville, but they called him up when a thumb sprain sent first baseman Rhys Hoskins to the injured list. Little did the Brewers know the guy they'd picked up from the minors would get on this kind of heater. 'The kid's been unbelievable,' manager Pat Murphy said. Murphy noted that Vaughn is swinging at the right pitches now. Vaughn concedes that wasn't the case earlier when he was with the White Sox. 'Early in the year, I was hitting the ball hard, maybe swinging at some bad pitches,' Vaughn said. 'Just trying to hone in on that, focus on getting my pitch to hit.' Vaughn certainly found the right offering Tuesday when he sent the first pitch he saw from Ryan Pressly over the left-field wall for his second career grand slam. Vaughn also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the second and hit an RBI single in the fifth. He has gone 8 of 15 over his last four games while helping the Brewers overcome their injury issues at first base. Jake Bauers joined Hoskins on the injured list July 20 with a left shoulder issue. Yet the Brewers have kept on winning with Vaughn taking over at first. Vaughn's transformation at the plate is similar to the turnaround he's encountered in the standings. After playing for last-place White Sox teams, he savors the opportunity to have a major role on a Brewers squad that has the best record in the majors.
