Trump Orders Second US Withdrawal from UNESCO

has ordered the United States to withdraw from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), marking the second time he has taken such action during his political career.
The decision reverses President Joe Biden's 2021 move to reinstate US membership, and will take effect on 31 December 2026.
Founded in the aftermath of World War II and headquartered in Paris, UNESCO was established to promote global peace through international cooperation in education, science, and culture. However, Trump's administration accuses the organization of embracing divisive, extreme social and cultural agendas that conflict with core US interests.
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly stated that UNESCO supports controversial positions that undermine American values, asserting that Trump's decision reflects the will of American voters who backed his policy direction in recent elections.
The US State Department echoed this stance, claiming that remaining in UNESCO contradicts America's national priorities. The agency described UNESCO as advancing a globalist agenda that clashes with the "America First" foreign policy doctrine.
A key point of contention remains the organization's recognition of Palestine as a member state, a move Washington claims fuels anti-Israel rhetoric within UNESCO's forums.
UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay expressed deep regret over the decision, although she noted it had been anticipated. Azoulay highlighted that the organization had already diversified its funding streams, with the US previously contributing just 8% of the agency's overall budget.
She also rejected the US rationale, stressing that the issues cited in 2024 are identical to those raised in 2017, despite significant changes within the organization.
According to Azoulay, UNESCO has reduced political tension and now serves as a rare global platform for pragmatic multilateral cooperation. She also pointed out the organization's active role in Holocaust education and combating antisemitism, contradicting claims of ideological bias.
French President Emmanuel Macron voiced his support for UNESCO on X (formerly Twitter), affirming France's unwavering commitment to the agency and its global mission to safeguard education, culture, science, and world heritage.
UNESCO officials have downplayed the immediate impact of the US departure, stating that all programmatic frameworks have been established in collaboration with both Israeli and Palestinian representatives over the past eight years.
Diplomats within the agency say the move was widely expected for political reasons, especially following Biden's rejoining of the organization and his pledge to settle outstanding dues from Trump's initial withdrawal.

France will recognise State of Palestine: Macron - War on Gaza
French President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday his country would formally recognise a Palestinian state during a UN meeting in September, the most powerful European nation to announce such a move. At least 142 countries now recognise or plan to recognise Palestinian statehood, according to an AFP tally -- though Israel and the United States strongly oppose the moves. Several countries have announced plans to recognise statehood for the Palestinians since Israel launched a bombardment of Gaza in 2023 in response to the October 7 attacks. Macron's announcement drew immediate anger from Israel, with Deputy Prime Minister Yariv Levin labelling it a "shameless decision" that would be a "direct aid to terrorism". Senior Palestinian Authority official Hussein al-Sheikh welcomed the move, saying it "reflects France's commitment to international law and its support for the Palestinian people's rights to self-determination and the establishment of our independent state". 'Urgent priority' International concern is growing about the plight of the more than two million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where the fighting has triggered a dire humanitarian crisis and warnings of mass starvation. Israel has rejected accusations it is responsible for Gaza's deepening hunger crisis, which the World Health Organization has called "man-made" and France blamed on an Israeli "blockade". Macron said the "urgent priority today is to end the war in Gaza and rescue the civilian population". "We must finally build the State of Palestine, ensure its viability and enable it, by accepting its demilitarisation and fully recognising Israel, to contribute to the security of all in the Middle East," he wrote on social media. He said he intended to make the announcement at the UN General Assembly in September. While France would be the most significant European power to recognise a Palestinian state, others have hinted they could do the same. Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced he would hold a call with counterparts in Germany and France on efforts to stop the fighting on Friday, adding that a ceasefire would "put us on a path to the recognition of a Palestinian state". Norway, Spain, Ireland and Slovenia all announced recognition following the outbreak of the Gaza conflict, along with several other non-European countries. Egypt's FM meets Burkina Faso leader on security, economic cooperation
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with Burkina Faso leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, on Tuesday and delivered a written message from President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi aimed at strengthening economic and security cooperation, the Egyptian foreign ministry said. In a statement, the ministry said Abdelatty conveyed Sisi's greetings and stressed that his visit, part of a multi-nation West Africa tour, was focused on boosting economic, investment, and trade ties. The foreign minister highlighted that he was accompanied by a high-level delegation of 30 Egyptian business leaders from public and private sectors, and affirmed the readiness of Egyptian companies to support development projects led by President Traoré, especially in construction, energy, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and textiles. On the security front, Abdelatty discussed the challenges Burkina Faso faces from the spread of terrorist groups in the Lake Chad and Sahel regions. He offered Egypt's expertise in counter-terrorism, outlining its comprehensive approach which extends beyond security to include developmental, economic, and intellectual dimensions. Abdelatty also pointed to the important role of Cairo's Al-Azhar in spreading moderate Islamic values through its educational and religious mission in Burkina Faso, and the continued acceptance of Burkinabe students at Al-Azhar University. During the meeting, the minister also expressed Egypt's appreciation for Burkina Faso's support for the Egyptian and African candidate for the post of UNESCO Director-General, and said he looked forward to continued mutual support in international organisations. For his part, President Traoré asked Abdelatty to convey his greetings and appreciation to President Sisi, praising Egypt's historical role in supporting African nations. He expressed his eagerness to open new avenues of cooperation and his readiness to provide all necessary facilities to enhance the Egyptian economic and investment presence in his country.
