Can Trump fire Jerome Powell? Here's when Fed chair's term ends

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday reiterated his call for Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell to resign, saying the central bank leader should do so immediately. President Donald Trump has previously expressed frustration with Powell's rate hikes.(REUTERS) Powell, who was nominated by Trump to lead the Fed during his first administration, has been facing pressure from Trump to vacate his position following his reported disagreements with the President over the Fed's inflation policies Joe Biden, who succeeded Trump after the 2020 Presidential Election, nominated him for a second term. Trump has previously expressed frustration with Powell's rate hikes and has hinted at replacing him with someone more aligned with his economic outlook. Amid repeated calls by Donald Trump for Jerome Powell's resignation, the question arises whether the US President has the power to fire the Federal Reserve Chairman. Here's the answer. Can Trump fire the Federal Reserve Chairman? The question of whether a U.S. president can fire a Federal Reserve chair has resurfaced amid speculation about Donald Trump's potential efforts to challenge Jerome Powell's leadership. However, in one of his previous press conferences, Powell asserted that the law does not permit a president to dismiss a Fed chair without justification, emphasising his refusal to resign if pressured. Legal experts like Russel Morgan of The Morgan Legal Group note the ambiguity in statutes governing Fed leadership removal. Under the 1913 Federal Reserve Act, the central bank operates independently from political interference, with officials protected from dismissal over policy disagreements. A 1930s Supreme Court ruling adds that removing a Fed chair would require proof of 'inefficiency, neglect of duty, or malfeasance.' Morgan explained that any attempt to oust Powell would likely involve a lengthy process, including a Senate-led investigation to establish valid grounds, as per Barron's report.

Amarnath Yatra Begins: ONGC sets up Yatri Niwas and disaster management complex for pilgrims in J-K

Amarnath Yatra Begins: State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC) has set up a permanent disaster management complex at Baltal, Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir for pilgrims undertaking the Amarnath Yatra. This Disaster Management and Yatri Niwas Complex will become operational on Friday, the company said in a statement. ONGC is developing these complexes at four key locations – Baltal, Nunwan, Bijbehara, and Sidhra – in Jammu and Kashmir, as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor (L-G) Manoj Sinha flagged off the first batch of pilgrims for the Amarnath Yatra from Jammu on July 2. The first batch of pilgrims set off from Lakhanpur to the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu amid tight security arrangements, marking the official start of the Amarnath Yatra 2025. The Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu serves as the primary base camp for pilgrims from across the country before they proceed to the cave shrine of Amarnath nestled in the majestic Himalayas of South Kashmir. "The Baltal Yatri Niwas and Disaster Management Complex, spread across 6,315 square metres, is now fully operational and includes a Yatri Niwas, VIP guest house, security infrastructure, and disaster-response facilities," an ONGC spokesperson said. The 38-day pilgrimage to the 3,880-metre-high shrine will commence on July 3 from the Valley via the twin tracks—the traditional 48-kilometre Nunwan-Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the shorter 14-kilometre but steeper Baltal route in Ganderbal district. The yatra will conclude on August 9. The ONGC spokesperson added that the Baltal facility will be formally inaugurated on July 4 by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, in the presence of ONGC Chairman and CEO Arun Kumar Singh. The facilities are currently being set up at Nunwan in Anantnag district, measuring 8,500 square metres, and at Bijbehara in Anantnag (7,640 sq m). Both sites are expected to be completed by September 2025, he said. The Sidhra complex in Jammu, designed to serve as a vital hub for boarding, emergency management, and logistical coordination, is targeted for completion by September 2026. These facilities will be operated by the Amarnath Shrine Board under the Jammu and Kashmir government, the spokesperson said, adding that it will provide safe lodging, sanitation, and emergency support to people undertaking the Amarnath Yatra, adding that over five lakh people undertake it every year. This permanent infrastructure will also benefit the local population throughout the year, the spokesperson added. The Baltal facility will provide safe lodging, sanitation, and emergency support to people undertaking the Amarnath Yatra.

Amazon reaches new milestone, becomes world's largest manufacturer and operator of…

Amazon has announced that it has reached a significant milestone, deploying its millionth worker robot across its global network of over 300 facilities. The company also revealed plans to power its entire robot fleet with a newly launched generative artificial intelligence (AI) model named " DeepFleet ." This expansion comes soon after company CEO Andy Jassy talked about job cuts and increasing automation. Amazon developing AI-powered robot fleet to boost efficiency According to Scott Dresser, Vice President of Amazon Robotics , this achievement solidifies Amazon's position as the world's largest manufacturer and operator of mobile robotics . Dresser stated that the new DeepFleet AI model will change how robots move within fulfillment centers, aiming to reduce fleet travel time by 10%. This efficiency gain is expected to lead to faster and more cost-effective package deliveries. Amazon began integrating robots into its operations in 2012, initially to transport inventory shelves. Since then, the roles of these automated workers have expanded, now including robots capable of lifting up to 1,250 pounds and fully autonomous units navigating facilities with customer orders. The company's continued investment in robotics and AI contrasts with some tech industry trends, though AI-powered humanoid robots are also anticipated to be deployed in Tesla factories this year. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Adidas Three Shorts With 60% Discount, Limited Stock Available Original Adidas Shop Now Undo Robots to work alongside humans: Amazon Dresser, while addressing anxieties about AI-led job cuts, emphasised that Amazon's robots 'work alongside our employees, handling heavy lifting and repetitive tasks while creating new opportunities for our front-line operators to develop technical skills.' He pointed to Amazon's new fulfillment center in Shreveport, Louisiana, which opened late last year and reportedly required 30% more employees in specialised roles like reliability, maintenance and engineering. However, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy recently told CNBC that the company's aggressive adoption of generative AI will inevitably lead to 'fewer people doing some of the jobs that the technology actually starts to automate.' While Jassy also stated that Amazon would continue to hire in AI and robotics, he admitted in an internal memo earlier this June that he expects the company's overall workforce to 'shrink in the coming years' due to technological advancements.
